WE MADE OUR FUNDING GOAL WITH A FEW DAYS TO SPARE BUT CONTINUE TO ENCOURAGE EVERYONE TO KEEP PLEDGING SO WE CAN MOVE CLOSER TO OUR ORIGINAL PROJECT GOAL AND BUY MORE EQUIPMENT TO MAKE MILLING FLOUR FROM ACORNS AS SIMPLE AS POSSIBLE - PLEASE PLEDGE NOW AND BECOME PART OF HISTORY ON KEA!
Over the last 3 months since launching our first Kickstarter Project we've accomplished SO MUCH. Unfortunately, we put our 1st Acorn Project goal too high, we tried to do too much at once and we did not reach our funding goal. This time around we've set our goal to purchase an Acorn Huller - crucial if we are going to move up to the next level of producing flour from acorns. If our new project exceeds the funding goal of $8000, we'll use every penny to purchase the machines we need to produce both flour and oil in an economically viable manner. The enthusiasm and support we have from local farmers and entrepreneurs makes it easy to see that this is only the beginning of what will be a new source of income from free and abundant acorns. Gluten Free Acorn Flour and Protein Rich Acorn Oil practically sell themselves we now realize by the overwhelming response Marcie has had to her Acorn Cookie sales. We have run out of flour from the 2010 harvest and now have a waiting list for ready made Acorn Cookies. (The Acorn Cookie Recipe is included with every pledge of $25 and more)
Local residents have begun to develop sweet treats with our acorn flour. The list of possible acorn products includes: specialty acorn foods, organic skin care products, all natural animal feed, bio-fuel, vodka, beer, and many more.
The ancient Oak forest of Kea is diminishing as trees disappear to accommodate a building frenzy spurred on by large land developing companies that build sprawling residential complexes with zero regard for natural surroundings, for the purpose of making a few individuals wealthy. There are well over 400 unsold, mostly unfinished, homes and commercial structures on Kea at this time. The financial meltdown in Greece has slowed down large land developers but the Oak forest will never be safe unless local farmers and residents can make an income from managing their trees rather than cutting them down.
These are only some of the abandoned buildings on Kea that will never to be finished or demolished. We've been looking at many of these skeletons for over 10 years.
We continue to see large chunks of land cleared of trees and illegal roads bulldozed across ancient paths. The ancient Oak forest of Kea and network of ancient paths through the forest, has hardly changed for centuries and we are hoping our acorn initiative will help preserve this special place. The Oak forest was always an integral part of this agriculturally based island and my hope is to make it so once again. We know exactly what machinery we need and we're ready to do it! We only need $8,000 for the 5.5 meter acorn huller and all pledges over our funding will go toward basic tools to gather, process, dehydrate and mill acorn flour and create organic acorn products with integrity. We've also calculated costs for storage and packaging. The more of a KICKSTART we get, the more we'll be able to explore acorn possibilities. We've seen an enormous demand for Acorn Cookies and will step up our production considerably with the purchase of a mobile Acorn Huller.
Our island has less than 3000 residents yet the Oak forest is in danger of being destroyed, we want to share what we've learned about turning the fruit of the Kean Oak forest into high quality organic products. We will continue to teach free seminars and post our progress on-line so others who live amongst Oaks can learn from our experience. We'll also provide flour processing services to anyone on Kea who wishes to use their own acorns and we'll open a retail outlet for all things acorn in April 2012!. We hope to lead by example and make acorns a new source of income for local families.

With our first Kickstarter Acorn Project (which did not get funded) we had a funding goal of $33,000 which more accurately reflects the amount of money we will need to set up a basic acorn flour and acorn oil processing facility. Now we're taking a smaller step forward with our lower goal of $8000 but we're hoping the project sprouts wings this time. We do not want to lose the excitement and momentum that we've built up over the last few months and therefore would rather do less than nothing!
