About this project
Help us Keep Storytelling a Tradition
Team: Davin Hart: Spanish and International Studies, Julie Aseltine: Environmental Communications, Acey Aseltine: Film, Jordan Bailey: Journalism.
In a time where good old fashion storytellers have to compete with big budget blockbusters a digital renaissance is emerging that has opened the door for the little guy to share his story. Storytelling is arguably one of the most important and powerful art forms mankind practices. Not only can storytelling change minds, but it can also touch hearts. As humans we need good stories that connect us to each other and to the world around us. We need stories that help us see the beauty of life despite the worry-hurry that surrounds us. Riding Bicycles is our effort to fulfill that need and we see it as a story worth telling.
Up until now we have produced Riding Bicycles ourselves, but we need backers to help take us to the next level. With funds from Kickstarter we can edit two additional 27 minute episodes and place an order of 700 DVD soundtrack combos. These DVDs will be sent to our backers, to short film festivals around the world, and will also be used to help us generate support for producing future stories.
The current Riding Bicycles DVD combo is offered to backers and includes two short films (Riding Bicycles 18 min & The Trickster 5 min) and a CD soundtrack that includes 9 enjoyable songs featured in the film.
If funded we plan on taking viewers on our adventure through the notorious Copper Canyon and into Mexico City by producing 2 additional episodes to add to our Riding Bicycles series. Once completed our goal is to distribute our series through PBS. Any extra funds will be used to construct our new storytelling website walter-radio.org and to produce a second season of short films that strive for excellence in storytelling. We hope that you can back us or simply support us by sharing our film or link with a friend.
Risks and challenges
Our biggest challenge is marketing a short film by itself. We need to create three 27 minute episodes in order to fit PBS minimum season standards and to also offer our viewers with enough content to satisfy.
1. With Riding Bicycles serving as our pilot episode our next step is to complete two additional 27 minute episodes from the 100 hours of interview & B-Roll footage we captured on our seven month adventure.
2. Pressing DVDs can be expensive when not ordering in bulk. Therefore, we need enough capital to order at least 700 DVDs to lower our production cost.
3. In order to insure that we can ship our rewards out as soon as possible we need to meet our budget so that we can complete our season by summer 2013.
The biggest risk for our project was carrying all our own camera and editing gear into Mexico amidst a raging drug war. Though the journey proved challenging at times we came away with a very different picture of Mexico than that depicted in the news. Where we expected hardship, we found hospitality and warmth. Our only loss was Acey’s beloved bicycle Pegasus who was abducted just outside of Guanajuato, Mexico. Descanse en paz, Pegasus. With the worst behind us our new challenge is sharing what we have worked so hard to achieve.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
