About this project
The Munsters + Mario Kart + Wacky Races =
Each year, thousands of monsters gather in Transylvania to witness the Monster Mash, a speed race and battle royal of monstrous proportions. Contestants race across 1,000 kilometers of the country’s harshest terrain and attempt to reach the finish line even as their opponents try to blast them off the road. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Monster Mash. Who will cross the finish line first? Who will even cross at all?
Monster Kart Mayhem is a racing adventure for two or more monsters (the more the gruesomer). There is no "Game Monster" to dictate the outcome; just you and your fellow ghoulish compatriots and a few dice to decide your fate.
During the race, known as the Monster Mash, players will attempt to outmaneuver, out-wit, and out-smash opponents while simultaneously watching out for tricky obstacles. Players pick one monster to race through some of Transylvania’s greatest countryside, such as the Rolling Hills, Cliffs of Insanity, Quicksandy Beaches, Freaky Forest, Scary Swamp, and Dracula’s Castle. Each of these regions has its own hazards to watch out for, so you’ll need to be a Superb driver if you wish to cross the Finnish Line (a line which hails from Finland) first and be declared this year’s winner.
Monster Kart Mayhem is a rules light and GM-less RPG/board game hybrid based on the Fudge™ System. It is designed for 2 to 6 players and takes about an hour to play.
That's right, it's an RPG and a board game. And it's fit for the whole family, too! Monster Kart Mayhem was designed to be suitable for kids and adults, making it a great entry-level RPG for your young ones and a perfect fit for family night.
Anyone, regardless of backer status, may download the beta rules for the core book at our website. Backers will receive access to the beta rules for the adventure packs as well.
Catch up and stay up to date on the progress of the game with our weekly blog series, Monster Kart Monday.
How It All Started
Monster Kart Mayhem was originally designed for the RPGGeek.com Adventure Contest of 2012. The story nobody has heard until now is that of how the idea was conceived.
My wife has a habit of talking in her sleep. As we were going to bed one night, I heard her say something that piqued my interest:
"Big foot in a sun roof," she mumbled.
"What?"" I had to ask. Normally I try not to bother her while she's falling asleep, but this sounded too good to pass up.
She woke up a bit more and said she dreamt something about Big Foot with his head sticking out of a sun roof. I couldn't help but laugh at the absurdity of the image, and pretty soon we were coming up with all sorts of ideas for monster/vehicle parings: Abominable Snowman in an ice cream truck, Frankenstein's Monster in a monster truck, Nessie with a big rig, Count Dracula in a hearse.
"And what about El Chupacabra, what does he drive?" I asked.
Without missing a beat, she said "an El Camino, naturally."
And so Monster Kart Mayhem was born.
We've already written Monster Kart Mayhem and four additional adventure packs, but we need to raise money to illustrate the game. Our initial goal of $1,000 is to fund the Monster Kart Mayhem core game--the Transylvania race course and its seven monstrous racers.
For every $750 we reach beyond the initial goal, we'll be able to illustrate additional adventures. We've already written four adventure packs, including:
- $1,750: Monster Kart Mermaids. Based on the ENnie Award-nominated "Mermaid Adventures" by Third Eye Games, Monster Kart Mermaids is a racing game of undersea fun. Players will race through underwater territories to try to take home the Gold Medal in the Atlantean Olympics. Includes 8 new racers, 1 new race course, and 9 new Power-Ups.
- $2,500: MKM Goes to Camp. Based on "Camp Myth," the hit children's book series by Chris Lewis Carter and the Camp Myth RPG by Third Eye Games, MKM Goes to Camp lets racers earn new merit badges for participating in the Camp Myth Kart Race. Players will also be able to import their Camp Myth RPG merit badges to gain in-race benefits. Includes 10 new racers, 1 new race course, 9 new Power-Ups, and over a dozen Merit Badges.
- $3,250: MKM Fairyland. Travel to Fairyland where Queen Feathercap is holding a race for the ages! You'll speed past Loch Arthur, through the Barrows, across the Troll Toll Bridge and through the Black Forest. Watch out for those tricksy faeries though, they like to play pranks! Includes 8 new racers, 1 new race course, 9 new Power-Ups, and 9 "Fairie Pranks" to add a new twist to your game.
- $4,000: MKM Circus Craziness. Come one, come all! Tonight’s Big Top event is sure to astonish, astound, and amaze! All of the circus’ best, brightest, and fastest racers will compete in the incredible, the wonderful, and the entirely insane Race of Awesome! Includes 8 new racers, 1 new race course with bizarre new race mechanics, and 9 new Power-Ups.
If we reach $4,500, we'll compile all of the adventures into a special print version--the Monster Kart Mayhem Monstrous Edition. In addition to the individual PDFs, you'll have the option to get a printed book with all of the adventures compiled into one convenient tome.
The Monstrous Edition will be available through DriveThruRPG's (DTRPG) Print-on-Demand (POD) service. This allows us to print and ship exactly the number of books needed, so we don't have to worry about budgeting extra money for a traditional print run. DTRPG also has printers in America and the United Kingdom, which allows them to ship internationally with very little additional cost.
Certain backer levels (detailed below) will receive coupons through DTRPG to purchase this book at a discount, based on their amount pledged. Others will receive a free copy, and we'll foot the bill for both domestic (US) and international shipments, since DTRPG's world-wide printing and shipping allows us to do that without the great costs normally associated with shipping outside of the US.
Page Count and Cost Breakdown
If you're not a numbers person, go ahead and skip to the next section, which begins after the next image. But if you'd like to know how this all breaks down, read on.
Monster Kart Mayhem Core Book: This book is approximately 32 pages in length in a convenient 6"x9" format. It includes 7 racers, 1 race course, 9 Power-Ups, all of the rules necessary to play the game, rules for how to create your own racers, and a few optional rules to expand your game's replayability.
Monster Kart Mermaids. This adventure pack includes 8 new mermaid racers, 1 new race course, and 9 new Power-Ups. It has an estimated page count of around 16.
MKM Goes to Camp. With 10 new mythical racers, 1 race course, 9 Power-Ups, and over a dozen merit badges, this book should weigh in at roughly 20 pages.
MKM Fairyland. Featuring 8 fairie racers, 1 new race course, 9 new Power-Ups, and 9 Fairy Pranks, this book will be approximately 20 pages.
MKM Circus Craziness. With 8 racers, 1 bizarre new race course, and 9 Power-Ups, this adventure pack will be approximately 16 pages.
Monster Kart Mayhem Monstrous Edition. Featuring all of the books in one package, we're looking at approximately 104 pages. We'll also include extra monsters and a new race course depending on some of our higher backer levels, so this book has the potential to reach about 128 pages.
At 128 pages, the soft cover, full-color book from DTRPG will retail for $30 + shipping. The hard cover version will retail for $35 + shipping.
Good Backers (see below) will receive a $10 credit if they wish to purchase a POD copy of the book. Great Backers will receive the PDF for free and a coupon to purchase the book at-cost, and Superb or higher-level backers will receive the PDF and soft cover book for free (or the hard cover for $5).
The Monstrous Edition will be available as a standalone PDF for a bundled price of $20. Both the soft cover and hard cover POD versions will include the PDF at no additional cost.
We have several reward tiers available, so you can pick your own perks.
$5: Backer. You gain immediate access to the Beta documents for the core book and all add-on adventures. You'll also get your name in the book.
$10: Good Backer. You earn all previous rewards, plus a PDF copy of the core book and all funded adventure packs when they are finished. The estimated delivery date for the core book is October 2014. Adventures will release at a rate of one to two per month after that.
When Monster Kart Mayhem goes on general sale it will retail at $10 for the core book and $5/book for the adventure packs, so backing at this level gets you all of these (a $30 value) at no additional charge.
If we reach the $4,500 Monstrous Edition goal, you'll receive a $10 credit toward the purchase of the book (PDF + the print version of your choice). The PDF will retail for approximately $20 and the print version for $30, so you would pay $10 for the PDF or $20+shipping for the soft cover print version, for example.
$25: Great Backer. You gain all previous rewards, plus we'll give you no fewer than two illustrated Backers Only characters for use with the game. These characters will not be available through any other channel, so now's your only chance to get them.
If we reach the $4,500 stretch goal for the Monstrous Edition, you'll also get a free PDF copy of the book and a coupon to purchase the print version of your choice at cost (plus shipping).
$50. Superb Backer. All previous reward tiers, plus a Backers Only race course that will not be available through any other channel.
If we reach the $4,500 Monstrous Edition goal, you'll get a Softcover printed copy of that book at no extra charge. (You may add $5 to get the hard cover version.
$75: Legendary Backer. All of the previous levels, plus I'll join you and up to 4 other players in a Google Hangouts or Skype game of Monster Kart Mayhem using the race course of your choice.
This is a great way to introduce your whole family or a group of friends to Monster Kart Mayhem.
$150: Monster Maker. All of the previous levels, plus we'll work with you to create a new monster and have one of our artists illustrate it. If we reach the $4,500 Monstrous Edition goal, we'll include it in the book with your name attached. Otherwise, we'll host it on the Accessible Games website for others to enjoy.
$300: Monster Trailblazer. All of the previous levels including Monster Maker, plus we'll work with you to create a new race course and have one of our artists illustrate it. If we reach the $4,500 Monstrous Edition goal, we'll include it in the book with your name attached. Otherwise, we'll host it on the Accessible Games website for others to enjoy.
Remember to spread the word. The more friends and family we reach, the better your rewards get!
Meet the Team
Monster Kart Mayhem is designed by Jacob Wood and published by Accessible Games. Jacob is an Oregon resident and long-time role-player whose goal is to bring the joy of gaming to absolutely everyone, including (and especially) people with disabilities. To that end, he'll make sure the PDFs for these books meet all of the accessibility best practices guidelines.
Jacob wrote and designed Monster Kart Mayhem as part of an adventure design contest in 2012. He had so much fun working on the game he decided to polish it up and turn it into a standalone RPG. In addition to writing and design, he'll be doing layout for the book.
Art for the Monster Kart Mayhem core book and several of its supplements is provided by Bradley K. McDevitt. Bradley has provided art for just about every publisher in the RPG industry, including Third Eye Games, Pinnacle Entertainment Group, Chaosium, and others.
Art for Monster Kart Mermaids and MKM Goes to Camp will be provided by Melissa Gay. Melissa will be reprising her role as artist for these two games--she provided illustrations for both Mermaid Adventures and Camp Myth: the RPG by Third Eye Games. Jacob has a good working relationship with Melissa, since she also provided all of the art for Psi-punk, Jacob's other Fudge-compatible RPG. Like Bradley, she has done work for tons of other RPG publishers as well.
Risks and challenges
The biggest risk involved with this project is hitting the deadline for the core book. Thankfully the game has already been written and some of the art has already been completed, so we essentially have 6 months to wrap up art, do a bit of editing, and plug it into our existing layout.
The estimated required time to do all of this is about four months, but I've added two extra months of padding time because I have a new baby due in May and I anticipate that taking up a lot of my time. Since publishing is my full time job though, it's not as big a setback as it may otherwise be.
I have successfully completed and fulfilled a Kickstarter project in the past, and I learned a lot from the delays I encountered. I now have a better knowledge of all of the tools I will be using to complete the book, and I even wrote an 11-part series about the Kickstarter process and its fulfillment challenges on my blog.
Finally, with the exception of the $4,500+ stretch goal, all rewards will be digital and use a very similar production process to the core book. I anticipate releasing one to two adventure packs per month after the core book is released, because I'll get my artists started as soon as the campaign ends. I have already completed the majority of the layout work, and you'll be able to see where we will be inserting art when you read your copy of the Beta PDFs.
The Monstrous Edition is essentially written already. Putting it together is a matter of compiling all of the individual PDFs into one book, which means I will be able to work on it alongside the standalone PDFs. Because fulfillment will be handled through DTRPG's POD service, there won't be any printer delays or unforeseen international shipping costs. It will take time to receive and approve proof copies, which can take 2 - 3 weeks, but that process begins as soon as all of the art is complete.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
