What's good everyone?
My name is AC Boral and I am the Chef and Owner of Rice & Shine. I'm excited to announce the Can I Kick It? Rice & Shine Kickstarter to open our very first Brick & Mortar in Long Beach, CA.
Rice & Shine is a Filipino American pop-up dining experience. We’ve been doing this for five years and we’ve been based in Long Beach for two years now.
What's Goin' On?
After five years hustling, we’ve found Rice & Shine’s first permanent home in LONG BEACH!
We plan for it to be a 40-seat restaurant, pop-up venue, and community space. The kitchen will also be the home for Rice & Shine Catering to serve the greater LA area.
We’ll be on Fourth Street and Temple, on a street with a bunch of Long Beach’s favorite restaurants, shops, etc. Basically, we’re moving into a really great neighborhood.
For our menu: we're excited to bring some classic Rice & Shine dishes to the table along with some o' dat new new! Also, this spot will hold home court for our several pop-up menus.
Longanisa Scotch Eggs will be available EVERY Sunday for Rice & Shine Brunch. Our Kamayan and Vegan Kamayan menu will be on deck for the weekend.
Enter The 36 Courses: The Wu-Tang Tribute Dinner will make its LBC debut in our home.
We're so excited to have this new restaurant as our toy and bring you good food!
The menu will feature food that is nutritious and supports the local food economy. You can expect to enjoy the Modern Filipino flair we've built our name on while offering options to accommodate gluten-free, vegan, and other dietary considerations.
When Can We Eat?
We're hoping to begin our soft opening in late July. And for our Grand Opening we’re aiming for September, once we get our beer and wine license (haaaaaay!).
Why I Do This
Rice & Shine's core belief is that the soul of Filipino food is at the family table. And what food means to me is the memories of my childhood, the memories where food is love.
It was in 2017 my biggest inspiration--in my career and in my life--passed away. And though I lost something immeasurable, I gained something invaluable: the mission to keep his legacy alive.
I remember he passed away on a Tuesday and the same week we had a sold-out 28-seat pop-up brunch that Sunday. Me, my mom, and my sister decided almost immediately that cancelling that pop-up would be the last thing he’d want so we went ahead and dedicated that brunch to him.
Standing alone for a minute in the back office before that brunch, something clicked. I realized that all I was doing with these pop-ups was imitating my dad and the way he would host and entertain, the way he’d let people in and gather everyone to eat. That’s when every insecurity I had about me as a cook, as a chef, as a businessman in the culinary world disappeared.
I’ll never forget how I gorged myself on just his kare kare sauce and rice, how the smell of his chicken adobo would fill the house when I got home from school, and how texting friends and family that he was making fried chicken would mean that ten hungry kids would show up.
I can’t ever recreate those memories but I can try to share what they meant to me with you.
This is why I want to open a restaurant.
I’ve had many people who I’d like to consider mentors and inspirations to me that kept me in the food world to that point in 2017, but realizing the real reason why I do it and who I learned it from in those 29 years drives me more than anything else.
How Can We Help?
To be honest, we got very lucky finding this space and moved very quickly to secure it.
And diving into this, I had faith that we would get the support needed to make this happen.
Even though the space was about 80% ready when we got the keys, the financial cost of opening a restaurant is more than you probably think. A new (used) set of equipment, permitting, insurance, and other costs add up quickly.
We have budgeted the costs and this Rice & Shine Kickstarter will get our doors open.
Beyond backing this project, here are a few more ways you can support:
- Attend the Can I Kick It? Launch Party on Thursday, June 20 at Romeo Chocolates from 6pm-8pm.
- Share the Kickstarter on social media -- #CanIKickItRiceAndShine
- Connect us with groups/communities for collaborations, speaking engagements, etc.
- Come thru when we finally open the doors
- Other -- we’d love to hear how you’d like to support in your own way
We really appreciate you and the support we've had these past five years.
And now I'm calling in the homie favor of giving me one more push to make something really special happen for our community.
Be Well & Be Happy,

Risks and challenges
Surprises LOVE to pop-up once you get the restaurant opening process going. So our dates are tentative and the fulfillment of your rewards depends on when we open.
We know you're hungry, but we appreciate your patience while we build this crazy machine and make sure it runs well before we have too much fun.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
