A Big Black Space: Short Film

WHY AM I MAKING THIS FILM?

As a Native American woman I am 2.5 times more likely to be raped or sexually assaulted.*

There is a troubling behavior I am sometimes subjected to by non-Native males once they learn I'm Native--they show a fascination with it. It becomes a thing that is 'cool' and 'hot' and there's a desire that brews underneath, like a fetish.

Production Still
Production Still

There are images rampant in our society of the hypersexualized Native woman that help perpetuate this 'Pocahontas fantasy'. Native women are the ones that are feeling the devastating effects of this--they are being assaulted, beaten, raped, abducted and murdered.

With this film I am trying to show why the 'Pocahontas fantasy' is problematic; to bring awareness to how things such as the skimpy 'Pocahottie' Halloween costume and celebrities wearing next to nothing and donning a fake headdress contributes to violence against Native women in our society.

WHO IS OUR TEAM?

Everyone donated their time to help shoot the film because they are all passionate about this subject matter and want to get this story out there.

Risks and challenges

There are always challenges when it comes to making a film but I am confident I have found dedicated people to help bring this story to the world and we will overcome any obstacles we come across to ensure our vision becomes a reality.

We are still trying to find the right music for the film which I hope to have figured out in the next few weeks as well. Song choices can make or break a film and we in talks with a few musicians and will have that locked down soon.

Delivery of certain rewards (for example, copies of the film) might change depending on how long our festival run is and what our contracts end up being regarding the music we end up using. However, you will definitely receive your rewards and I will update you along the way as we move forward.

This is my very first film...and as a first time writer and producer, I am putting myself out there, especially because it is also such a personal story. I believe in the relevance of this story and I am happy to be a part of bringing awareness to the epidemic of violence against Native women.
