Clay artist Jury Smith creates pottery and sculptures by hand. Support the handmade by helping Jury get a kiln!

About this project

Hand-Made believes that the act of making a handmade object is one of the most important activities in our world today.

Hand-Made is a project that directly supports this activity. Jury Smith, a Philadelphia-based artist, makes her living creating wheel-thrown still life pottery and hand-built sculptures. In a world that arguably suffers due to the devaluing of objects, Jury is passionate about fostering a RE-valuing of them. She does this simply by making inspiring objects with clay. Currently preparing for a two-person exhibition in Fall 2011 at the Clay Art Center in NY, Jury is also the still life object sponsor for Abbey Ryan's A Painting a Day oil painting project. Almost all of the ceramic bottles, cups, and vases in Abbey’s "Paintings of Handmade Pottery" are Hand-Made by Jury Smith.

Hand-Made would like to request your assistance in helping to provide Jury Smith with the funding to purchase a kiln to fire her work. For a clay artist, a kiln is a critical component of the making process. (Ceramics, by definition, requires high heat treatment to become permanently hard and strong.)

Why should folks support artists making that which is handmade? While, yes, the best handmade works are unique, well-made, and innovative, typically embodying fair labor practices and celebrating traditional skills, most important is the STORY behind handmade work. Consider how important handmade objects are in your life. Supporting Jury to secure a kiln of her own will ensure the continued availability of her handmade works. In a small way, your donation will also support the greater handmade community, and promote the importance of supporting and buying that which is Hand-Made.

Earlier this year, Jury was internationally recognized as an Emerging Artist by Ceramics Monthly magazine. In Jury’s words, “Focusing on ‘making’ engages a particular type of responsibility and an awareness of effect. Considering the current consequences of being unaware of the way in which things are processed — from food to trash to ideas — the exploration of ecological consciousness is relevant.”

Jury grew up in the 1970s in northwestern Pennsylvania in a small town made unique by the residency of a student of Frank Lloyd Wright. The “everyday-ness” of a home that integrated nature with the inside world set the stage for a deep appreciation for seeing the wonder in the everyday. Coming from a family of inventors, steel and glass factory workers, woodworkers, farmers, and artists, she came to appreciate the act of working with her hands. Years spent working on a farm shaped her appreciation for and awareness of material, kinesthetics, and texture.

Jury's first experience with clay took place at age 13 when she visited her older sister at college and was introduced to hand-building and throwing. She still vividly remembers the experience of peering into a firing salt kiln for the first time and being changed forever.

Her eye-hand coordination was honed in her years spent working as a breadmaker in Arizona, as she perfected the forms when rolling out baguettes in the wee hours of the morning. She says that her love of working with clay became solidified in Arizona's deserts. She jokes that this is where she fell in love with the “heat of firing clay.”

Jury received her BFA from Tyler School of Art of Temple University in 2001, and her MFA from Tyler in 2004. She also spent time studying at Jingdezhen Sanbao Ceramic Art Institute, China. She lives and works in Philadelphia, although a big part of her heart will always be in Arizona and northwestern Pennsylvania.

PLEDGES!

Jury has saved $1000 of her own money and I hope you’ll help to raise another $3500 to meet the goal. Every penny of your pledge money (minus the fees for Kickstarter’s involvement) will be used for the purchase, wiring, and installation of Jury’s kiln. Any additional money will be used for kiln ventilation and studio materials.

IF YOU CANNOT DONATE AT THIS TIME, YOU CAN STILL HELP BY SHARING THIS PROJECT WITH YOUR FRIENDS!

Look at the rewards!

To the right is a list of rewards for different pledge amounts. If you have an idea or request for a reward that's not on there, email us and we'll try to make it happen!

What happens if the money isn’t raised in time?

Your pledge of $1 or more is greatly appreciated since Kickstarter and this fundraiser are all-or-nothing endeavors. Every Kickstarter project must be fully funded before its time expires. If the goal isn’t met before the deadline, no money changes hands and no kiln is purchased. We want to avoid this scenario at all costs!

Can we exceed the goal?

YES! This would be truly amazing! Exceeding the goal would allow us to get Jury a larger and better kiln. Kickstarter will allow as much money as is given before the deadline. We have set the goal at the minimum -- so if we are able to exceed it, it would be a dream come true.

How do you make a pledge?

To make a pledge to Hand-Made, click the green “Back This Project” button at the top right of this page. You will be asked to create a quick username through Kickstarter, pick your pledge amount, and select a reward. From there, you will go through the Amazon checkout process. Note that you must finish the Amazon checkout for your pledge to be completed. If you don't have an Amazon Payments account, it only takes a second to open an account. It's all or nothing funding, so you will ONLY be charged for your pledge if we reach the goal of $3500 by February 1, 2011.

Can you pay with a check? Send cash by mail?

Sorry, Kickstarter only supports credit card payments.

Can you increase your pledge once it’s been made?

YES! Once you donate to Hand-Made, you may want to change your incentive reward to a different one, or increase your pledge amount. To do so, go to Kickstarter and sign in. If you go to Hand-Made's campaign page, the green “Back This Project” button has been replaced with a blue “Manage Your Donation” button. Click it and you can enter a new amount, or choose a new incentive.

Are pledges tax deductible?

Sorry, pledges are not tax exempt because Jury does not have 501c3 status.

Can you gift a reward?

YES! That’s a great idea! If you would like to donate to Hand-Made, but want to give your reward to someone as a gift, just go through the process of making a donation in your name. For billing purposes, the donation must be in your name. After our deadline, we will send a message to you on Kickstarter. (It will be forwarded to the email address you provided.) We will request the recipient's name and address from you at that time. Please reply with the recipient’s information, and we will make sure they receive the reward.

You're not in the US. Can you still pledge to Hand-Made?

Yes! You can pledge from anywhere! However, please email us regarding international shipping terms for rewards.

If you make a pledge, when is your card charged?

If this project is successfully funded, your card will be charged when we reach the funding deadline. If the project does not reach its funding goal, your card is never charged. That's why they are called pledges.
