Set in a world of political intrigue and ancient magic, Beloved Rapture is an upcoming 2D RPG inspired by the SNES era! 

  • $18,000 - An expanded soundtrack - we'll nearly double the amount of tracks in the soundtrack by hiring additional composers, such as renowned Indie composer Pongball, to assist Andreas!
  • $20,000 - Physical Copies of Beloved Rapture will become available to backers and buyers in the form of a CD-Rom (with accompanying artwork) or a Flash-Drive (any backers above $34 tier!)
  • $22,500 - More Staff - At this level of funding, we'll be able to bring on additional developers to BR, allowing us to finish the game ahead of the listed release date!
  • $35,000 - Console Ports - we'll put all additional money toward our efforts to get Beloved Rapture onto the Nintendo Switch, PS4, or other consoles

Beloved Rapture is a game that takes place amidst an epic conflict, though its heart is more deeply concerned with the intimate human relationships of its characters. 

Personal and interpersonal stories take center stage. Characters challenge not only the next looming dungeon boss—but themselves, and their own demons. 

Existentialism, spirituality, family trauma, LGBT themes, and friendship are all important elements of Beloved Rapture's story, and are treated with the reverence they are due.

As might be obvious, our biggest inspiration is the 16-Bit era of gaming! We've made a conscious effort to recreate the charm and nostalgia of that era, expressed through the game's artistry, music, mechanics and presentation.

Johan, an introverted young man from the countryside, finds himself thrown into a conflict beyond his comprehension.  The Aeons—an enigmatic religious faction—move ever-closer to his hometown. 

Now faced with a threat to his once-elysian way of life, Johan must contemplate the role he is destined to play in their escalating conflict. 

At his side are Aiden, the mysterious son of a Shrine caretaker, who has trained since childhood in the mystic arts; and Crystal, a runaway noblewoman intent on ending the war before it reaches her family.     

Through their travels, Johan is intrigued by Aiden's increasing fascination with him, as well as the appearance of Draco, an Aeon soldier with a connection to his own mother.

In Beloved Rapture, game-play and its mechanics go hand-in-hand with the storytelling. 

You'll never feel like you're rushing through a cinematic scene just to face the next battle (or vice versa!). The game encourages all players to take their time seeing the world at their leisure, soaking up the emotional atmosphere first-hand as the story progresses.

While playing, you'll discover hundreds of beautifully hand-designed areas for the player to explore in great depth—haunting dungeons, enormous cities, vast fields, and everything in-between. 

Every area you visit has its own secrets to tell; whether it be through exploration, combat, or by interacting with the NPCs who live there.   

During my youth, I had always marveled at the incredible storytelling that role-playing-games were able to accomplish. But, naturally, a small part of me wished for stronger LGBT inclusion, diversity, and progressivism. 

In that vein, it was incredibly significant for me to express some of those narrative qualities now that I have a game of my own, and showcase the characters exactly as I envisioned them. Fantasy archetypes are embraced in the world of Beloved Rapture, though they're tempered by more modern themes.

Beloved Rapture began life as a labor of love; a hobby project I worked on only in my spare time. I cobbled together whatever assets I could find, and meshed them together in an attempt to tell the story I knew I had to tell.

Over the years, though, it has evolved into a truly collaborative effort with my team and growing community of fans. It transformed into something I could truly call my own.

In 2018, I took the final step in that direction, and decided to revamp the game as a fully-realized Indie title. For the undertaking, I began commissioning completely original assets and music—and all of us couldn't be more excited about this transition!

Although I was more than happy to pay my team for the new material this transition required, I quickly realized how labor-intensive it truly is to design a JRPG-style game... (very!)

Kickstarter felt like a natural extension of that process, and a great way for me to ensure the game's completion with higher-quality production values!

  • Once finished, the game will be distributed for Windows/Linux on Steam, itch.io, and other eShop platforms! 
  •  If the campaign over-performs, we hope to even be able to bring the game to consoles and elsewhere. 

Beloved Rapture has "classic" turn-based combat that will feel familiar for fans of Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest.

  • The game has no random battles—instead, combat initiates when the Hero comes into contact with an enemy on the field maps (similar to Chrono Trigger or SMRPG).
  • Thus, players can "grind" or skip over most enemies depending on their play-style preferences.

In addition to standard items and spells, fighters can use Relica, an infusion of magic with their weapon of choice. The resulting attacks are among the most powerful in the game, and can deplete upward of 50% of a fighter's MP in a single turn.

Ethrel Shards can infuse new elemental capacities into their weapons, unlocking even greater potential for Relica. Heroes can "absorb" Ethrel without limit, although some characters are better-suited than others to learn specific spells (i.e. for Healing or Dark/Holy etc), depending on their disposition.

A Link to the Past, Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger and other classics were a profound influence in the design of Beloved Rapture's numerous overworld maps.

Although the game's underlying mechanics are that of a typical jRPG (combat handled on a separate battle screen), the Exploration segments are specifically designed to evoke wonderment, curiosity, and frequent problem-solving from the player. 

In fact, there is a significant focus on exploration and direct interactions with the game's dynamic world. Heroes can run, swim, climb, move objects, or perform various other tasks to manipulate the environment.

Most locations contain branching paths, or side-quests to complement the main story.  

Numerous weapons or hidden items are scattered throughout the land. Treasure Chests can be discovered in three color variations—red, blue, & gold, each rarer than the last. A good eye & clever exploration skills will be necessary to find them all.

The grandeur of the natural world is an important part of Beloved Rapture, and we've made an effort to reflect this even in the pixel art itself, or in the design of the maps.

 "Overworld" maps are generally expansive, and designed around exploration; while the Dungeons provide a more linear (and demanding) set of challenges focused on puzzle-solving and combat.

Traps/mazes, and fearsome enemies lurk inside each of the game's many distinct dungeons.

Although Beloved Rapture has ten playable characters in total, the four Heroes below accompany the player on the bulk of their journey! Some assets for the secondary characters are still in development.

One of my larger aspirations for Beloved Rapture is to commission an entire soundtrack in the spirit of the iconic Super Nintendo sound-chip. 

As some already know, the SNES "was capable of producing stereo sound, composed from 8 "voices", generated using 16 bit audio samples and basic effects such as reverberation." By modern standards, this tech was very primitive, but it prompted some remarkable creativity within those limitations. 

Yasunori Mitsuda, Nobuo Uematsu, Hiroki Kikuta, Koichi Sugiyama,  Koji Kondo,  Eveline Novakovic, and David Wise were some of my favorites, and a profound inspiration for BR's soundtrack.

 Andreas Kotsamanidis (SnappleMan of OCRemix) has come on board the project as our lead composer / audio engineer. Andreas has contributed to over 10 revered gaming albums, including remix albums for FFVI, FFVII, Sonic 3, Donkey Kong Country, and more!

Andreas has created a customized sound set for Beloved Rapture, replicating many of the limitations and nostalgic quirks of the iconic 16-bit sound. This music style is not only highly nostalgic, but appropriate for the 16-bit visuals.  

If the budget allows for it, we plan to bring multiple composers on board, all of whom will work within our instrument library, and report to Andreas (as well as myself!) to ensure a coherent musical vision.

We've actually considered launching on Kickstarter for quite a while! However, our team made the collective decision to hold off and wait for a particular level of polish before doing so. 

So, we're aiming for 12,500 USD!  Although miscellaneous expenses may arise, we've mapped out that figure as the minimum we'll need to complete it with the features (and more of the high-quality assets) as shown above. Our team is eager to continue the work we love, but the production costs for a JRPG have proven to be costlier than we first anticipated!

$5625 of our funding is going into the Graphics, primarily for additional scenery, artwork, and pixel portraits! Should we get over-funded, all further money will be invested into improving animation quality as well.

$5000 will cover our baseline Audio expenses. This includes both music and sound effects. Should we become sufficiently over-funded, the number of songs in the soundtrack will expand accordingly.

$1250 will account for the various Kickstarter fees and taxes.

Finally, we'll designate the remaining $625 into a "Reserve" fund. This will help cover any potential expenses for artwork corrections/adjustments, or any small-scale changes that must be made. Additionally, this fund will help us cover the Steam Store fee ($100) before Beloved Rapture is finalized for purchase.

  • If our campaign somehow becomes over-funded, there are several stretch goals we have in mind! However, we'll be unveiling those in future updates!

With the exception of our highest-tier backers, we've decided to base our campaign's rewards primarily on in-game content and bonuses, instead of physical rewards! We're a rather small team with a modest budget - so we want to focus our resources on delivering a finished product with as much high-quality content as possible! Our reward system will be especially intriguing for creative types, RPG fans, or those who want to contribute developmentally to Beloved Rapture in various small (& meaningful) ways! 

  •  $13,500 - Translation of BR into German and French.
  •  $15,000 - Extra Dungeon - An extra dungeon will be added to the game.
  •  $16,000 - Dynamic Portraits - Pixel portraits drawn by Vagrant will become completely animated for greater immersion, and every character will have 8-10 emotional expressions to make our scenes as evocative as possible.
  •  $18,000 - An expanded soundtrack - we'll nearly double the amount of tracks in the soundtrack by hiring additional composers, such as renowned Indie composer Pongball, to assist Andreas!

Aaron T. Crawford is the producer and director of Beloved Rapture. He's overseen the project from its humble origins (little more than a rough outline!) during his adolescence, all the way to its current iteration. Aaron dictates the general creative thrust of the project; including its characters, map design, and script.

  • His passions include travel, the outdoors, creative writing, cinematography, retro gaming, philosophy, LGBT culture, and much more. 

Anna Kazantseva is the game's primary illustrator, and a true delight to collaborate with! Creative by nature, she's honed her skills for over a decade. 

During her free time, Anna enjoys fantasy books, video games, television episodics, and spending time in nature.

 Fabian N. Fischer is our lead pixel artist. A staple in the German RPGMaker community since 2003; Fabian worked on several of his own games during his teenage years, long before joining us. He's learned much of his pixel know-how by emulating the classics—Chrono, FFVI, Secret of Mana—and it shows.

  •  Much of his personal art involves various fantasy portraits, animals, and the natural world. The full gallery can be found here. 

Andrew Spittal is helping to refine and enhance both the story and the world of Beloved Rapture, as well as edit its script.

A novelist by trade, Andrew is currently working on his second novel as well as a number of short stories. He has been involved in indie game design for more than a decade, and has helped translate and edit several projects.

While any indie game production offers its own unexpected challenges, we're confident that we have the passion to see Beloved Rapture through to completion after so many dedicated years with the game! We're far enough along in development that we know roughly how the project will end, and what it will take to get there. We've hit a plateau in our ability to fund the game, and if all goes well, this will get us over that hurdle!
