Lawn Gnome Publishing is an independent zine and chapbook publisher, created by writer Aaron Johnson, that was started in Flagstaff, AZ in 2004 and moved to Phoenix in 2008. In the eight years we have been up and running, we have edited, designed and printed over 40 titles from over 20 poets and distributed over 45,000 copies all over North America.
In 2011, Aaron Johnson and Lawn Gnome Publishing launched it's first bookstore inside The Firehouse Gallery. Aaron lived and conducted business inside the 12 by 14 foot room, focusing on producing and selling handmade independent chapbooks and zines from over 200 artists in five different languages alongside a selection of used classics and photo books. Eventually, Aaron ran out of space to print, bind, sort, and ship books, while trying to sleep, entertain guests, and change clothes.
This is where we need your help. Recently, one side of a duplex home on 5th St and Roosevelt opened up (on the same street as Conspire Vegan Cafe, Jobot Coffee Shop, Lost Leaf Bar, & Made Arts Boutique) and it would be the perfect place for Lawn Gnome to move into. Lawn Gnome Publishing Bookstore would be the first local and used bookstore in the heart of Downtown Phoenix's Art District, adjacent to Arizona State University's Phoenix Campus.
Opening a bookstore in Downtown Phoenix is not easy! First, we had to find talented and inspiring writers, trust a pool of dedicated editors, obtain hundreds of great classics, lift and sort beautiful glossy photo essays, search for a new location, speak to the owner about our creative vision and why we are perfect for the neighborhood, build safe and sturdy bookshelves out of reclaimed materials in the neighborhood, and now we need to pay our rent and turn on the utilities to show off our new store to the community!
Aaron Johnson is going to sign the lease on January 4th, 2012 and we will move in January 8th, 2012 with plans on opening the bookstore to the public on Wednesday, February 1st, 2012, at 8am.
