About this project

Thank you, thank you, thank you to all of our backers and everyone who's spread the word about "X Files: The Musical." We've experienced an unexpected outpouring of support, and we greatly appreciate all of you. After surpassing our original goal of $1500, we've been making elaborate plans for how to use all the money donated. Thanks to all of you, XFTM is going to be bigger, crazier, and more mysterious.

If you want to be more involved or receive XFTM updates, you can join the Facebook group or visit We hope to see you in Lincoln this August!

What is this?

"X Files: The Musical" is the seventh production and third backyard musical by The Colonel Mustard Amateur Attic Theatre Company in Lincoln, Nebraska. Millions of people worldwide love The X-Files, and our audacious vision is to transform the show into a full-length theatrical spectacle.

What began as a funny novelty—plays written and performed by a group of friends in the attic of a large Victorian house—has turned into a series of low budget spectacles for a growing group of local friends and fans. More importantly, it's fostered a thriving community drawn together by a mutual love for home-spun theatre and creative living.

After cramming over 100 people into the attic for a play, we knew it was time to move to a new, larger venue: the backyard. That’s where we performed “Jurassic Park The Musical!” in 2009 before a capacity crowd of 250. In the summer of 2010 an even bigger spectacle, “Dr. Quinn: The Musical,” required a larger backyard, and we still barely squeezed in the 450 people who showed up to see it.

We’ve added exciting elements to each new production, and “X Files: The Musical” will be the biggest thing we’ve ever created. We have 40+ people in the cast and crew, a 30-piece orchestra, plans for elaborate sets and backdrops, and we’re expecting 1000 people to come see the show during its two-night run (August 19-20, 2011). It’s going to be almost unbelievably awesome.

Our plays are always free and open to the public, because they're all about bringing joy and entertainment to the community. Working with little to no money in the past, we've capitalized on what we do have: creativity. Models floating above the crowd on fishing line became grand helicopter entrances, men in papier-mâché masks became a T-Rex and the Man-in-the-Moon, and backyards became theaters crammed with hundreds of people excited for a night of free entertainment.

Since “X Files: The Musical” is our most ambitious show yet, we’re going to need your help to make it as awe-inspiring and thrilling as a show involving alien abduction, human-animal hybridism, and singing FBI agents should be.

The Plan

Our script is written, our score is being composed, and the cast and crew are chomping at the bit to get started memorizing lines, learning music, building the set and planning the special effects. Your donation will go toward raw materials needed to construct a beautiful, versatile (and safe!) set. We also need help to buy and create amazing costumes. We’re firm believers that great theater can be done on a shoestring budget, but we’ve got some plans for this one that we need a little money to properly pull off. $1500 may not be a huge amount of money, but it's significantly more than we've ever had for a backyard play, and we're going to stretch this money as far as it will go. As always, cardboard, papier-mâché, and good old-fashioned whimsy will be our primary materials.

If we happen to raise more money than our goal, we’re planning to set some aside to create a professional-quality recording of the songs from the show with the cast and orchestra. We’re hoping you’ll help us reach our goal – we truly appreciate your help!

As you can see on the right, you’ll get something in return for your donation. You might even be able to score a unique t-shirt or a DVD copy of “Jurassic Park The Musical!” Our great cinematographer from that show, Mark Hennings, is working with us again on “X Files: The Musical,” so the DVD for this one is sure to be a blast.

  • Yes. It is actually going to happen. Experience from prior shows, including two other full-length musicals, has prepared us to knock your socks clear off with this one.

Great question. Under the advisement of an entertainment lawyer (who happens to be my professor), we've taken pains to own the rights to the material in this show. Because our show is very clearly "making fun of" The X-Files (albeit in a good-natured way), we are protected by a fair use parody clause, similar to other comedic parodies such as SNL. Also, while story lines cannot technically be copyrighted, we also write extremely original stories that remain true to the spirit of the show but take the plot in a very absurdist direction.

We have been extra careful with our use of any of The X-Files' trademarked phrases (e.g. we say "The truth is somewhere" rather than "The truth is out there."), and when we reference these phrases we are clearly parodying them. All of the music is entirely original, so we are not violating any musical copyrights.

There are a lot of other "Such and Such: The Musical" projects floating around out there, and I'm not sure if they have researched this as thoroughly as we have. Some of these other projects may be in murkier legal waters, but we are confident that our production is perfectly legal.
