About

Thanks for checking out my Kickstarter for The Robin Hood of Couches, a new Science Fiction, Mystery, Comedy. Here’s a back of the book description of the novel.

Reese investigates corporate fraud and discovers some joker has been giving away free couches to the needy because when a person can no longer afford the subscription service fees, all their furniture disappears. The Robin Hood of Couches ends up in a ditch when blunt force trauma snuffs out the poor’s best chance of not living in an empty room their whole life. Reese rolls up his sleeves. Time to get to work.

$25 would be a great way to help make this story happen, and you’ll get some cool stuff.

Why am I here, asking you to be a part of this project? Because I want you to curate the arts. I believe that people have the power to support the art they want to see made.

Back when I first started writing, I submitted my work to major publishers. One of the major ones took enough interest in my book to send me an email to say I was on the pile of books good enough for a deeper analysis. After about two and a half years of being in that deeper look pile, I was rejected for publication. In the meantime, I was publishing other novels and people liked what they were reading.

Now I want to give this novel the same treatment it would get from a publisher, but not spend two and a half years to see if I even have permission to do it. That’s where you come in. You can be the publisher. You get to be the one that helps fund the arts. $25 would help me out a lot and you’ll get some cool stuff.

As a science fiction comedy author, I’m obsessed with how technology can go awry in the mundane aspects of our lives. Rather than focus on the apocalypse like the rise of AI or dystopian futures where the new world government controls our everyday lives, I wanted to envision a world that’s not too far from our own where well-meaning people create technology for the betterment of humanity, and future generations now must deal with the unintended consequences. In short, I wanted to explore a future where people are not subjugated by a nefarious dictator but a broken system much like many people live in a broken system today.

The germ of this idea comes from two technologies present in our life, 3D printing and subscription-based services. It wasn’t a far stretch to combine the two into a world where everything costs one low monthly fee. Why pay for furniture when a 3D printer built into the walls of an apartment can provide a new living room set on a whim? Who needs clothes when you can print your outfit? Why not pay a monthly fee for unlimited access to your favorite designers? Another fee for your favorite restaurant to have the food appear instantly? Why go to a gym when for a fee the gym can be printed in your own home on demand?

What happens when you can’t afford to pay these subscription fees?

You can check out two unedited sample chapters here: Chapter 1 and Chapter 2.

And don’t worry, there are more than two chapters. The novel is done. It just needs some tweaks, edits, polishes, and cover art. All that stuff that makes a book shine. I’m looking to have a finished product in May 2019. But I’ll need funds for cover art and for editing. Just $25 can make that happen.

I’m Aaron Frale, and I have a long history with humor. In addition to publishing over 10 books, I co-wrote the no-budget comedy film Hamlet: The Vampire Slayer and was one of the core members of a sketch comedy group in college that wrote and performed over 20 original late-night theater sketch shows.

Suffice to say, I’ve had my bruises and successes in comedy. Back in the theatre world, I’ve had failures where I wrote a sketch where no one laughed ever (a painful process for both writer and performer alike), to shows like Hamlet: The Vampire Slayer that was so successful, people kept coming back to see the show even after it already closed (part of the reason why we got most of the original cast back to film the movie).

Now that I’ve left the theatre life behind, I’ve kept my love of comedy and combined it with my love of Science Fiction, Horror, and Fantasy to write books with a comedic twist. From novels like Time Burrito (a story about a guy traveling through time to make the perfect breakfast burrito) to ORION (a plucky hero who learns the art of sarcasm when he discovers he can’t die). I love to weave laughter into my stories.

Arkady Roytman is a freelance artist with many titles to his name. His more recent work includes the illustrations for 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and The Nutcracker. Arkady did the original art work for Aaron’s novel ORION:

By backing this project some of the proceeds will go to Arkady to make an original cover for The Robin Hood of Couches.

Therin Knite is and editor and author. They are the owner of Knite & Day Design, a company that edits, formats, and helps independent authors put their best foot forward with interior design, editing, and even story development.

By backing this project, Therin will personally edit the book and design the interior.

I need your help taking this from a book collecting digital dust in an editor’s stockpile of books to a something you can read, hold in your hand, and put on your book shelf. I can’t afford the print run on my own, so I’m asking for your help.

If you want to get your hands on this limited Kickstarter exclusive, nab yourself the $25 level. And as a bonus, you'll also get the eBook, an eBook of ORION, a thank you at the end of the book, and a never before released short story! Go snag it now or check out some of the other offerings!

Most of the money will go to cover art, interior design (formatting eBook and print book to make the inside look as good as the outside), and editing. The cover you see here will not be the final product. Instead, it will be a brilliant original piece like the cover of ORION, but I need funds to make that happen. There will also be some used to cover printing and delivery costs, fees, and taxes.

I want to get this book out to you as soon as possible. However, I need some editing and cover art before that can happen. Here is what you can expect for your $25.

Risks and challenges

The biggest risk supporting an author on Kickstarter is knowing whether or not they will ever complete the novel. The first draft is done, and it will need some editing, so you don’t need to worry. I’ve allotted enough time to complete that part. I’ve also written over ten previous novels, so there should be no worries about finishing it.

If there are a lot of backers, especially backers looking for physical copies of the book, it might take a little more time to ship them out, but rest assured you will get it 90 days before the general public. While I have worked with my editor and my cover artist before on many projects, they are people too and something may happen that may delay their contribution. While they know about the project and the timeline, they are humans and stuff happens. The timeline is realistic and a little bit padded. Scotty from Star Trek said to always quote a longer time then you think it will take, so you look like a hero when you deliver it early. That’s the philosophy that I try to live by.
