About this project

Hi my name is Serhend Sirkecioglu, a senior cartooning major @ the School of Visual Arts and under the pen name AACRO im a cartoonist. Over my summer break and for my Junior thesis @ SVA, I was experimenting with the concept of "making a comic for a public space" and from there I built my first 3D comics and began writing my observations and theories on them.

This is my first one in practice, an intepretation of the first verse of Charge of the Light Brigade

and this is the second, a cluster(3D comic page unit) from my 8 cluster thesis(our theme was fairy tales) , an adaptation of the legend of John Henry.

You might be asking why adaptations? Fair question with I suppose is a fair answer. There is no established language for 3D comics(yet...) and I want to furthur develop the formal aspects and language of Interactive Narrative and create a 3D comics language for others to use & before I create an original story for this form of comics.

Now with that aside, I want to go BIGGER with the third one! I proved it can be done and I want to do it better than before!

The Story, The Time Machine by HG Wells, a childhood favorite for me (first time and a dozen later I read it in detention, lol)  and one that will be fun to illustrate and interpret in 3D.

The Size, one 6-8 ft long Cluster(aka page unit for 3D Comics). depth will vary but im not expecting to go beyond a foot.

The Time Frame, mid-May to end of Aug. Enough time to think things over, figure things out, draw/design, build, have mental breakdowns, etc.. worse case scenario I don't get it done before I return to school, I will use my vacations/breaks to finish it up.

Materials, Now the comic will be comprised of Illustrated cutouts(watercolor and gouache), collage, found objects and interactive kinetic elements in the spirit of my 3D influences Joseph Cornell, H.C. Westerman, Lee Bontecou, and The Sharmanka Theater(all of which you should check out!). it be all be arranged in wood boxes mounted on wood boards that will link up into a single cluster for ease of transport with a chestnut varnish. The interactive moments aka "Spectacle Panels" will be powered by Arduino unit(s) and mostly be motion sensitive and a few touch sensitive moments(still figuring out these elements).

The Budget, $3,500, my fatal mistake when working on my last 3D comic was not knowing that sculpture is expensive and having next to nil in cash. The Money is to pay for the wood, nails, varnish, paint, exactos, ebay, and any other supplies i need to build the comic.

So now with that proposal I hope the Kickstarter community help me continue my research and love for making 3D comics.

thank you and sincerely,

AACRO
