About this project
The New Amiga Compatible Keycaps fullset
Having a bright and shiny new case for your computer simply isn't enough for it to look as new as it should.
With this project we're now giving you the opportunity to finalize your computer rejuvenated look.
The 108 keycaps set is going to replace all of your current yellowed and worn keyboard keycaps.
After all these years your computer deserve a touchy lift up.
The fullset is compatible with ALL Amiga classic keyboards.
EXCEPT for the A1000 and some early versions of A2000 or A500 not using Mitsumi Hybrid Switches.
Please check KEYBOARD COMPATIBILITY dedicated section below.
Included Extra Keycaps make the set compatible with A600 and/or ANSI keyboards has it consist of Fat Return key as well as Short Space bar for instance.
And with all these keycaps, springs and plastic clips for special keys are delivered as well for an easy swap-n-replace experience.
- Lets replace them!
Amiga keycaps suffers from the same disease as Amiga cases and they get yellow over time.
On top of that there’s no available source where to get new fresh sets of keycaps to replace your yellowed or even lost ones.
To refresh our keyboards the same way we did with New Amiga 1200 cases we're now launching this project to build fresh compatible keycaps.
So the aim of this new project is to manufacture 18 molds to create Amiga compatible keycaps for almost all models of keyboards.
All 18 molds needed to manufacture new keycaps are built after each and every profiles have been 3D modeled.
Video below shows early steps of modeling.
- Say No to yellow
All keycaps are made out of ABS plastic and they’re not going to yellow over time like old keycaps do.
Main reason why old keycaps were turning yellow is because of the flame retardant contained within the plastic they’re made of.
These chemicals are reacting badly to UV light hence slowly yellowing keycaps over time. Once chemical reaction is initiated it can’t be stopped.
That’s why RetroBrightning isn't a permanent solution and plastic devices treated that way will move back to their previous yellow state.
To avoid this phenomenon all new keycaps are made of modern ABS plastic that does not react to UV Light.
Hence no yellowing is going to happen ever.
Lots of devices are made out of this modern ABS nowadays and they don’t suffer these issues anymore.
- Quality Pad Printed Labels
Pad Printing is the technology that commodore used on 95% of all amiga keyboard key caps.
So the same technology is used on the new compatible fullset.
Doing it so ensure exact same lettering quality as we can found on original keycaps.
-> Pad Printing technology illustrated:
The video below is an introduction to pad printing technology.
This video is a technical illustration only which does not represent each and every steps required to correctly print keycaps and add protective coating.
- Keyboard Layouts
- Available from main campaign goal
3 keyboard layouts are directly available within the campaign:
- UK English
- US English
- DE German
These layouts are available within the main campaign goal.
A lot of different keyboards layouts exists for Amiga computers and to keep costs as low as possible we simply couldn't afford to include all of them within the same campaign goal.
Several other keyboard layouts can be unlocked via stretch goals.
- Extra Keyboard Layouts & Stretch Goals
- Available through stretch goals
Extra layouts & perks are available from stretch goals in that order:
- SE/FI Swedish & Finnish + Extra ALT & "A" Keycaps (1x of each)
- FR French
- NO/DN Norwegian & Danish
- ES Spanish + IT Italian
Have a look to Stretch Goals chart for some more information.

If you still have your own springs you can always keep these as it doesn’t hurt having spares.
16x Plastic Clips
Clips can be found on some of the keyboard special keys like the
2 versions are available. Small and Big.
Big is used on A1200 space bar while Small are used on Return key for instance.
Stabilizer bars are inserted in these clips so that keycaps are correctly maintained.
- Profiles & Molds
Nowadays regular computer keyboards using Cherry Mx Switches requires keycaps with 2 to 7 different profiles depending keyboard.
Profiles are the way keycaps are shaped and when you look carefully to some of these you can see very clearly that not all of them are of identical shapes.
This new compatible fullset is based on the Amiga 1200 keyboard with keycaps made of 15 different profiles.
Also to be compatible with all Amiga keyboards (500/2000/3000/600/1200 & 4000) as well as ANSI keyboards, 3 extra profiles needed to be added on top of that.
By these specifications the fullset is now based on a total of 18 different profiles.
Each profiles needs to be re-created in 3D followed by handcrafted prototypes of each of them.
When each profiles overall quality reaches specs and are satisfactory, molds will are carved out from blocs using a CNC tooling machine and new test samples will then be made to assess if molds tooling adjustment is necessary to reach perfection.
So the aim of this campaign is to manufacture 18 molds for all keycaps profiles. And then to manufacture all keycaps sets for all of you backers and Amigans.
->CNC Tooling machine illustred:
The video below illustrates how a CNC tooling machine operates to create any type of profile.
This video is a technical illustration only which does not represent each and every steps required to manufacture keycaps profiles.

Risks and challenges
This project is meant to manufacture new compatible keycaps molds and keycaps fullsets for the Amiga line of computers.
To do this we need to build several molds where each corresponds to keycaps profiles present in Amiga keyboards.
To build these molds we've secured 3D modelling and manufacturing processes with the help of professionals in this industry.
If anything happens or goes wrong with any of these processes our manufacturer simply does all the work again at no extra cost.
With your support we'll make this happen and the new compatible keycaps set is to become the perfect complement to already existing new Amiga 1200 cases and make the classic Amiga line of computers bright and shine again!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
The first campaign for New A1200 cases was help in FRANCE with Phil's previous team while he was on long leave vacations.
Phil lives & work in Singapore, and to follow KS rules the new campaign had to be located in SG.
