Palisades Virtuosi was formed in 2002 by three friends who just loved to make music together. We quickly discovered that there was not much repertoire available for our instrumentation and decided that since we knew lots of composers, the best way to remedy the situation was to begin commissioning music ourselves. And so, in 2003 our “Mission to Commission” was born. We had no idea how quickly it would take off! Along with commissioning works at the rapid pace of 4 each season, we received pieces as gifts from several composers, and also received transcriptions of existing works from other composers who were enthusiastic about our commissioning projects and wanted to be a part of it. In all, our mission has involved us in the creation of over 40 new works of music for flute, clarinet & piano!
In order to fulfill the educational and outreach aspects of our mission we are committed to making sure these new works are brought to as much of the public as possible. We have been fortunate to receive funding from both granting and private resources to make our previous recordings a reality. (Volumes 1, 2, & 3 (out this summer) of our New American Masters series are released by Albany Records and contain 18 of our commissioned works.)
But now in this economy, standard funding sources have dwindled, foundations have lost much of their capital, and we find ourselves struggling to find funding to continue this important part of our mission.
We are thrilled to find this on-line funding platform in Kickstarter and so thankful that we can be a part of this new and exceptional way to reach out beyond our loyal fan base to find additional partners in you! We hope you’ll peruse the various rewards set out on this page and then help us to achieve our goals by pledging toward our project.
We ARE a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, so your contributions are tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law!
There are eight works on this fourth disk of commissioned works, each one different in character and style. There is the impassioned “Statements” of Joseph Turrin (seen in the video clip above), the dreamy landscape of Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Melinda Wagner’s “Thumbnail Moon” (also in the video clip), the fresh & poignant characters of Amanda Harberg’s “Birding in the Palisades” (heard in the latter portion of the video), the clear strains of Gwyneth Walker’s “Full Circle” (heard in the opening of the video) and contrasting with these, the minimalist brilliance of Ryan Francis’ and Aaron Grad’s works, young composer, Sunbin Kim’s spiky “Whirlwind” and the rich brooding sonorities of Matthew Halper’s “Trio”. We have set up a page for you to listen to clips from each of these works and others we have commissioned at www.palisadesvirtuosi.org.
Thank you for checking out our project, pledging, and sharing this project with any of your friends who might be interested also. Please feel free to use any of the widgets on this page to connect with social media and help promote this recording and Kickstarter.com!!
Most of all, thank you for helping us to fulfill our mission of recording and sharing this music with you and with the world!
