Garrett DeHart and New Lexicon Productions Presents “An Untitled Edgar Allen Poe Project.”
Produced and Directed by Garrett DeHart, Masters Candidate at Georgia State University
Genre: Animation / Horror / Psychological / Thriller
THE FILM: Borrowing from Edgar Allen Poe’s macabre short story, “The Tell Tale Heart,” my film is a live-action with post-production animation inspired by the story and the thematic elements of the Romantic period. Telling the tale of insanity, horror and revenge and shot in HD, I will be able to recreate in an intensive post-production process a visual aesthetic similar in style to the Dark Romantic movement in painting. To me, this visual effect is how I think Poe may have imagined his stories were they able to come to life at that time.
Set on a foggy night in a post-Civil War Baltimore jail cell, the viewer will find five of Poe’s narrators from five of my favorite stories, The Tell-Tale Heart, The Black Cat, The Imp of the Perverse, The Raven, and ‘Montresor’, the narrator of The Cask of Amontillado, all of whom await their deaths by hanging at dawn. The gallows from which they will hang wait in a courtyard just outside the jail, visible through the jail cell window. In the initial scene of the film, Edgar Allen Poe himself is led into the cell, having been arrested for public drunkenness. It’s during his time in the shared, dingy cell, that he hears each of the characters tell their tales.
THE CAST AND CREW: Through my experience on various film shoots in Atlanta, I have had the opportunity to meet Larry Holden, who was in the films Memento and Batman Begins among others. After hearing of this project, he excitedly agreed to fly to Atlanta and star in the film. After extensive casting calls, I was able to cast a diverse group of actors who have shown an enormous amount of dedication. My crew is comprised of other Graduate level students and professionals. I have partnered with a renowned make-up artist whose work is truly unbelievable. As the film will be shot in the Green Screen Studio, my prop-master (who participates in Civil War Reenactments) has allowed me the opportunity to use clothing and props from actual time of Edgar Allen Poe, bringing to life the time in which he lived.
BUDGET: I am honored to work with a well-known Hollywood actor who is performing free of cost because he believes in this project and in my vision. I simply have to pay for his travel to Atlanta, house him and provide an agent fee. My make-up artist is so excited he has agreed to do the film for the cost of the make-up. But the film has still broken our bank and we need to raise funds to finish the film.
IN SUM: This film has become much more than I could have dreamed. The opportunity to work with well-regarded actors and crew members and the support that I have from my thesis committee at Georgia State has exceeded my expectations and has simply allowed me to reach higher, dig deeper, and work harder. I plan on submitting this film widely on the festival circuit at the end of the summer and defending my thesis to graduate by the end of the year.
Thank you for your time and Thank you for considering being part of our team.
