About this project

CURRENT STATUS: WE ARE REACHING FOR OUR ABOVE-AND-BEYOND GOAL. For every $500 we go over our original goal we will build 1 MORE LITTLE FREE LIBRARY. You can help us build more than 20 libraries along our route. Keep spreading the word about Type Rider II: The Tandem Poetry Tour. We have 65 hours to go!! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

{What's this project about?} A pair of poets riding a tandem bicycle and towing two typewriters 1,400 miles from Boulder, Colorado to Beloit, Wisconsin, building tiny libraries and promoting poetry, community, a love of reading, and the spirit of collaboration along the way.

During our 30-day journey, we plan on building approximately 20 Little Free Libraries along our route.

{The background} Type Rider II: The Tandem Poetry Tour is the second installation of a traveling writing project begun by Maya in 2012.

Type Rider: Cycling the Great American Poem was a 40-day, 1,200-mile trip from Amherst, Massachusetts to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, during which Maya towed a typewriter behind her and invited people she encountered at each stop to contribute to a collaborative collection of writing.

Her journey was documented by several publications, including The New York Times, the Chicago Tribune, Rails-to-Trails Magazine, and The Writer. For a full list of articles, visit www.mayastein.com/news

{Our Plan} Type Rider II builds on the experience of the first trip in several ways. First, we will be partnering with Little Free Library (www.littlefreelibrary.org).

According to the organization, there are currently 11,000 towns in the U.S. that do not have public libraries. We want to change this statistic!

During our bicycle tour, we will be helping to build new libraries in the communities we visit, as well as visiting some of the existing network of libraries.

Secondly, we will be engaging local and national poets to hold poetry readings and participate in other events at our stops and donate books to these small community libraries.

And finally, we will be creating personalized poetry on our typewriters for the people we meet, a keepsake of our trip and - we hope - an inspiration for others to tap into their own creativity.

We will be giving these poems away but keeping copies to include in a final book about the project, which will also feature photographs from the road, interviews with local and national poets who will join us, and profiles of some of the members of the communities we'll be visiting.

The tour is scheduled for July 1-August 1, 2014 and will cover four states - Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa, and Wisconsin. Our plan is to make 40-50 stops, mostly in small towns, and to build 20 or more Little Libraries together with people who want to join the fun."

The funds raised through this Kickstarter effort will help cover the cost of these new libraries, the special events we'll be launching in communities along our route, a support vehicle that will be with us through the entirety of the trip, and the audio-visual and written materials we will be assembling to create a final document of the project.

Type Rider II: The Tandem Poetry Tour is about creativity, collaboration, and community. We hope to serve, especially, those small towns along our Boulder-to-Beloit route without an existing public library, and to build on the work of the Little Free Library movement, which aims to promote literacy and the love of reading for children and adults everywhere.

And by writing poems for the people we meet along the way, we hope to spark the spirit of connection through creativity and inspire young writers to keep pursuing their passion.

*** UPDATE ***
The SPONSOR A ROUTE reward tier is a great way to personalize your pledge. For each sponsored route, we will hold up a sign bearing your name next to the welcome sign at the community we're visiting that day, then post a picture for you to share.

Here's how it works: Take a look at our planned itinerary below and pick one of the routes. The miles of that route equal a dollar amount. (For example 51.8 miles equals $51.80.) When you click "Back this project," simply fill in that dollar amount in the top box (instead of checking the "$26 or more Sponsor a Route" reward).

Risks and challenges

With two Kickstarter projects successfully funded and completed, we are well aware of the risks, challenges, obstacles, and (occasional) delays that come with launching a project and seeing it through to the end. And as creative collaborators who facilitate art and writing workshops in New Jersey and elsewhere, we are adept at navigating the unexpected twists and turns that come with new experiences. For us, the biggest value of launching a project publicly is straightforward, honest communication. We have learned that vulnerability is a strength and that building a supportive community demands transparency at all times.

A unique challenge that we may face is the weather during our ride. It will be the middle of summer and we will be in the midwest, an area of the country prone to sudden storms and even tornadoes. Safety is our primary concern, and we will do everything we can to stay protected from the elements, even if it means not riding for a day!
