Maya Stein and Amy Tingle are The Creativity Caravan, a mobile creativity company based in northern New Jersey. Our mission is to design and facilitate opportunities for people of all ages, backgrounds, and skill sets to nourish themselves and their communities by tapping into their creative expression. We believe creativity can change lives by building self-confidence, harnessing imagination, helping to practice problem-solving, and bridging differences through the joy of discovery, and our vintage caravan, MAUDE (Mobile Art Unit Designed for Everyone) allows us to deliver unique experiences and inspire communities everywhere.

The Tiny Traveling Library that joined us during our Kickstarter-backed "Type Rider II: The Tandem Poetry Tour" in the summer of 2014 was filled with miniature books written by children and adults around the country. Its "How-to" titles - ranging from "How to Annoy Your Siblings" and "How to Make Killer Egg Salad in 6 Minutes" to "How to Do Nothing" and "How to Laugh" - were so popular that the library took on a life of its own. Readers were smitten with these tiny treasures, and after we returned, we began incorporating the library into our school programs and poetry events. This past fall, we put out a fresh call for entries for a touring exhibit devoted to tiny books. The response was beyond what we could have anticipated, and this coming summer, we are  taking "The Tiny Book Show" on the road.

We are transforming our vintage travel trailer to house this collection of more than 300 books handmade by amateur and professional artists from around the world, all less than 3" in dimension. This mobile museum will visit select locations around the country in July and August, set up at public venues and spaces, and will be featured at the Miniature Book Society's Annual Conclave, a gathering of book artists and collectors, in McKinney, Texas.

In addition to the showings at each tour stop, we will also be facilitating all-ages tiny book-making workshops, using books from the exhibit as inspiration. Visitors to the exhibit will have a chance to experiment with a variety of book structures, techniques, and materials, and in some cases meet and connect with the participating artists themselves.

We are inviting the Kickstarter community to help support our ambitious efforts to bring this mobile museum of miniatures and the accompanying book-making workshop to more than 30 locations around the country. The funds raised will go toward securing venues for the exhibit, workshop supplies, and travel expenses on this 45-day tour.

Risks and challenges

With three successful Kickstarter campaigns behind us, we know many of the risks and challenges inherent in designing large-scale travel-oriented projects, particularly during the hot summer months and for a relatively compressed amount of time.

Because we will be traveling quite a long distance to get to each stop, we are building in a few necessary rest days to recalibrate and restore our energy. In addition, towing a trailer means slower drive times, so we are making sure (as best as we are able) that our tour schedule leaves room for delays. And while we don't anticipate any breakdowns, we are also aware of the wear-and-tear of the journey on both our primary vehicle and the caravan itself (it is, after all, 50 years old!), so we will be preparing as best as we can for any unforeseen events that will require repair.
