The Sky is Calling
A passionate appeal, a lush epic, a gorgeous journey, and songs of wonder, beauty, heartbreak, and purpose. "The Sky is Calling" is a celebration of humans in space.
Instrumentation for the album includes a mix of electronic and acoustic instruments not usually heard together (synthesizer and hammer dulcimer, Mbira and drum pads) and sound samples from earth and space. Some rhythm tracks have been created by importing visual data (NASA photographs) into an audio program where they are sculpted into grooves. We will be dancing to the beat of the stars.
The album is meant, first and foremost, to be a great pop album. Fantastic art leads to fantastic places. Not every song will be space or science based, but many of them will be. I hope to incite some excitement for space, technology, knowledge, wonder, collaboration, and a better future.
"We are in the universe and the universe is in us.” ― Neil deGrasse Tyson
Songs range from looping siren calls, to electronic dance numbers, to alien folk ballads. Titles of songs I have written, and song in progress.

- Dream Life
- Easy for Me
- To Be Touched
- Planet 216

- The Fractal Universe
I have several science advisors for the album, which makes me amazingly happy:
Matt Everingham - @matt808 - Space professional focused on commercial lunar development, education and outreach. Also, producer of electronic music.
And I'm talking to several astronauts (people who have actually been in space) about playing music on the album. Fingers crossed!
If you have been, or are currently, in space, and you want to make sounds - hand claps, flute, sing-a-longs, anything - please contact me! (Also, if you are an actual astronaut reading this: YAY!!!)
THE FIRST SONG
The first song from the album, "The Sky is Calling," was recorded on September 9th at Studio G in Brooklyn, NY with producer Joel Hamilton (The Black Keys, Tom Waits)
This song is available for immediate download as soon as you back this project for any amount! After you make your pledge, head over to the “updates” section - the first update includes the link to download the song for free.
ALBUM ART: The final album art will be decided after the songs are recorded. There will be photos, graphic art, and more by some very talented artists.
Here is one of the amazing pieces that will come with the DELUXE DOWNLOAD and Postcard Set.

WHERE THE MONEY GOES:
Recording the music at Studio G: $15,000
Mastering the album: $3,000
Paying musicians: $2,500 (I play most instruments myself, but will hire some people to come play with me because I can't play EVERYTHING.)
Making CDs and T-shirts: $2,500
*Kickstarter & Amazon's very reasonable fees are 8-10% of the total. And it is SO worth it because this system they have built makes pledge fulfillment very easy. They work hard to make this all work for us.
Total = $30,000 just to record and fulfill this Kickstarter project.
OTHER THINGS I WANT TO DO
VIDEOS: I love music videos. With me in them and without me in them. Animated or not animated. NASA footage, vintage newsreels, shiny glossy glam video shoots with hot models, dance music videos, sci-fi Barbarella-style videos. I want them all. And they all cost varying amounts of money. If we hit $35,000, I will make one super shiny music video with Jim Batt and I'll let Kickstarter backers choose the theme (Barbarella, perhaps? I really want a clear acrylic space bikini! Or I do have that song about building a sexy lady robot. Lady robot video? With Veronica Varlow as the robot?) Jim Batt makes very fancy videos for people all over the world and I'm so lucky that he wants to work with me! Find him www.jimbatt.com @battsignal
TOUR: I love touring. But touring is expensive. If I reach well beyond my goal I'll be able to hit the road with help. Great shows happen with great tour support.
PROMOTION: More promotion means more people will hear the album!
RECORD MORE: I have a lot of really good songs that do not fit the space theme. I want to record them and put them out as an EP before the end of the year (Especially 'The Red Dress' song I recently wrote for The Bloggess.)
TO THE MOON: I'm putting everything into this project: all my energy, all my love, all my money. I've never had a record label or manager or help of any official kind. I've been too busy making music to chase down the elusive record deal or representation. And while being independent is considered all cool and legit these days, being this independent is not productive. Reaching the stratosphere has always been a collaboration between a large team of people with expertise. More pledges means more help towards the building of a lasting, sustainable career by hiring the team I need.
TO THE ACTUAL MOON: Like, literally. Please, please, please: first concert on the moon!
I'm ready for lift off! Are you?

To the members of MISSION CONTROL who have been with me for the past year: Thank you for getting me this far. You are my ground support and without you this album would not exist at all.
Risks and challenges
Sometimes albums take longer than expected. It happens. I have put out enough records to be able to gauge when I can deliver. At most it would be a few months later. But I would do something extra to make the waiting fun!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
