In March 2011 Amanda Palmer and Kim Boekbinder sat on a couch in a warehouse in Melbourne, Australia and sang a song called "Such Great Heights," by The Postal Service.
It was the end of the night at the end of the tour at the end of the world. The duet is simple and beautiful. It is a snapshot of a time when two busy musicians found quiet in a city at the end of the earth.
The song will be released on a 7" record, along with an original song by Kim Boekbinder called, "On the Other Side of the World" which is a song about being in love with someone on the other side of the world, ie: Australia. Australians are wonderful.
Only 1000 lavender colored vinyl will be made. The packages will also include high quality stickers and 5x7 art cards with the album art and a digital download. Each record will be hand numbered and signed by Kim.
The songs will also be released as a digital EP after the 7" is released.
The album art is by the NYC duo, Teetering Bulb www.teeteringbulb.com who have done beautiful art for comics, graphic novels, album covers, book covers, and more.
Where the money goes:
Vinyl - $2,100
Printing and art - $1,140
Shipping supplies - $420
Shipping - $4,000 ($4 average per shipment)
Recording costs - $300
Royalties - $500
(Some of these costs are approximate. I have also not included the 10% fee that Kickstarter and Amazon Payments take. And this does not include the cost of archival printing for the Fine Art Package, but I kept those separate because they are a specialized item and I don't want that high cost to hold back the general release.)
When I meet my minimum goal of $6,000 I will be able to order the records to be printed and pay the artists and recording engineers.
If you want to support this project you can pledge any amount even if you don't want a package. Everyone gets a download. Thank you!
Poster - Matte Printing on heavy paper - 11x17" Edition of 250(Signed by Kim Boekbinder on request)
Fine Art Print - Archival Quality Printing on water color paper - 12x22" Edition of 60 ($200 package)(Signed by Kim and The Teetering Bulb Team)
Kim will sign everything. You cannot stop her. She is a signing machine. The Teetering Bulb art duo will sign the fine art prints. Amanda Palmer will be out of the country when the records are made and she won't be able to sign anything. We could also get the crazy cat lady next door to sign things... just for fun.
ORDER AT YOUR OWN RISK! I will ship ONE package to you and I will send you a photograph of me sending the package, but your post office is so corrupt that I have lost many packages and dollars to it. If you don't get the first package I cannot send you another at my own cost. That sounds so harsh. I'm sorry. I love you.
On July 29th, when this Kickstarter project is completed, I will send you a form asking for your current shipping address.
Jim Batt, Kylie Sparrow, Laurence Barnes, Mandy Hall, propertyofranger, Tarnah Clair, and MissedMeMrsO1 - thanks for the photos and videos!
I will record "On the Other Side of the World" in July and hope to have the downloads in your lovely ears by July 30th - the day after this Kickstarter project has ended.
So let's say you want multiples of the $15 package - just put in the dollar amount for additional copies, but still choose the $15 package. Then send me a message here saying how many you want and I'll note that in my records. So many things are possible!
The pre-order ends on July 29th, and then I'll get the money from Kickstarter to start the record pressing process. All the art and songs will be ready to go so it will only be a matter of manufacturing the records and printing the art. This is usually a 6-8 week process. Records are scheduled to be sent in late September. If I can speed up this process I will. I want to see this finished. I'm really excited!
I'll be using http://www.bandcamp.com to deliver your digital download. You'll be able to choose which file type you prefer, they offer these types of download: MP3, FLAC, OGG, AAC, ALAC
