About

GMOB.net allows users to build secure autonomous communication networks without having to entrust the privacy of their communication to any central authority.

The autonomous identity model on GMOB.net ensures that all communication is encrypted before being sent to the server and that no data stored on the server is personally identifiable.

The idea for the project came from the London Riots in 2011. I'm hoping people will appreciate the need for this type of service. It could help people all over the world right now if they knew it existed.

On most sites your identity is stored as a unique record on the server when you first create an account, and each time you log in to the service you are authenticating against that unique server-side identity. GMOB.net is different. Identities are not stored on the server but are stored encrypted on your device in local storage. The server has no user or session tables. You control your identity.

A network is a semi-persistent encrypted communication channel. Sort of like a group chat. A network can be public, private or secret. Messages are AES 256 encrypted before being sent to the server. You can add photos in chat which are encrypted in the same manner.

2014 Goals

GMOB.net has been a long time in the making. Now that the application is stable, we need your help to launch the site. Funds will be used to establish the business, pay hosting fees and develop the platform for the next 12 months.

  • Scale infrastructure to support demand
  • Reorganize the codebase
  • Publish source code
  • Add support for federated networks
  • Release native mobile apps on iOS and Android
  • Develop new features on the Roadmap

So if you value your privacy like I do, please like, comment, tweet, blog and donate. Because nobody is going to hand us our privacy, it's our responsibility to make it ourselves.

Rewards

Stickers - Glow in the dark vinyl stickers! Great for laptops.

Sponsorship - Logos of distinguished and corporate sponsors will appear in the bottom right corner on all public networks for 6 months. Logos of preferred sponsors will be displayed first. Logos of distinguished sponsors will be added to the random 30 second rotation thereafter. Advertising credits will be usable toward ad spots like this at the end of the initial 6 month campaign window.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do you handle forward security?A: Not as well as we could. Network keys are valid for the entire life of the network and messages are deleted after 30 days. There may be a better solution in the future including a truly forward secret protocol, or automatic or ad hoc re-keying, probably with some additional options allowing network administrators to choose how aggressive they want to be with their network's encryption.

Q: How do you handle Authentication?
A: Contextually. If an identity named Bob requests access to your network, it is your responsibility to ensure that Bob is who you think he is. There is a feature on the roadmap to allow for the creation of contacts within the application, effectively blessing an identity's public key as recognized. It may also be possible in the future to interact with identities requesting access before they are accepted to, for instance, pose a challenge question to verify their identity.

The larger goal of this project is to prove that end-to-end encryption and social networking are not mutually exclusive and that people should be demanding this level of privacy and security in all their communications. For the time being I see this as the only app that's tackling the problem of reconciling privacy with social discovery. I want to raise enough money to keep working on this problem and open source the code to allow more rigorous scrutiny. If you have any questions or concerns about the technology, please drop us an email on the contact page.

Risks and challenges

This project is built on 6 months of research and development. What we have now is a production ready prototype.

The number one challenge right now is to attract a critical mass of users to the system. Regular use by a large number of geographically co-located people is vital to building the system's value as a geosocial network.

Building a critical mass of users will significantly increase traffic to the site, requiring a more complex application architecture and higher infrastructure costs. These technical challenges are fairly well understood. Scaling the site to tens of thousands of users should not present an insurmountable technical challenge given sufficient infrastructure funding.
