About this project
INGATHER is a photography and video website database that will tell the unique and behind the scenes stories of our local farms and farmers-- which are playing an increasingly prominent role in our food culture.
Lets get down to the nitty-gritty here...
We love fresh, delicious, sustainably grown food*-- knowing that it came straight from the farm-- planted, grown, harvested, and delivered with love and respect. But where do we find these food and farm stories? Isn't there a disconnect in our knowledge and awareness of the ways and means by which this glorious food comes from the land to our tables?
In my experiences getting to know farmers, I find it so interesting and dynamic that each farmer's story is quite unique: backgrounds, farming methods, business approaches, philosophies, and relationships with Mother Nature. The common thread of these stories lies in a farmer's commitment and determination to produce excellent food and care for the land.
What I also find interesting and important to understand- is that working with local farms and supporting sustainable agriculture is all about a set of unique relationships-- There is no formula! These stories and relationships are at the core of this movement.
Phase 1- Summer-Fall 2010:
I'm hittin' the road with some of my creative colleagues- and visiting Chicago-area chefs' favorite farmers. I will create a series of photographs and videos- and a website database that will convey each farmer's unique story.
1.) Create a vibrant series of heartland farmer photographs and videos.
2.) Launch a dynamic resource website of sustainable farms for consumers and culinary professionals.
3.) Blog about my adventures and send out weekly updates.
To grow the website into a viable business!
Through photography and video, I will capture farms and farmers... the nitty gritty and the pretty. I will launch the Ingather website database as I go. Initial development is underway.
A photo slideshow and a video will be posted for each farm. The format will be similar to www.kategrossphotography.com + a video. The website will be dynamic-- content will be added to and modified seasonally, yearly, etc. Restaurants and other businesses will be able to link through to their farmer partner stories from their own websites.
Weekly, I will record my experiences in my blog. (www.dishesanddirt.com)
Start up of INGATHER (www.ingather.net) will be funded through the funds raised on Kickstarter. I think of this just like a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture)-- except this is a CSMP-- Community Supported Media Project!
Depending on how much $ is raised on Kickstarter, depends how far I can take this project.
More funding means building a more complete resource. At a minimum, I'd love to have 8 farmer profiles up by December 2010.
Why help fund this project?
#1. You love dynamic stories that connect you to your food. And you want to share these stories with others!
#2. You want vibrant and unique farm photography!
#3. You believe in supporting our farmers with a commitment to sustainability- and you want to further your understanding of what this really means!
Everyone who pledges will receive weekly project updates, a good old fashioned Thank You card from me, and, of course, knowing that you helped build such a wonderful resource!
If you pledge $35 and over you will receive beautiful photo greeting cards and high quality prints. Photo greeting cards will be mailed by September 2010 and photos for print selection will be posted on an going basis- and must be requested (all at once) between November 2010- April 2011.
In conjunction with the database, I will also set up an image licensing and print ordering store where everyone can purchase photography online.
Chefs, Restaurants, Food Service, Producers, Purveyors-
This will provide you with a unique marketing resource!
For this project I am working with some of Chicagoland's great chefs and food businesses that have a strong commitment to supporting sustainable farms in the Midwest. If you are Chicagoland restaurant, food service provider, producer, or purveyor with the same commitment- Please email me for more information at Hello@kategrossphotography.com. I want to learn about your farmer partnerships- and how I can help you tell this story. INGATHER will be a valuable resource for your customers, prospective customers, and staff to learn about and connect with your farmer partner's stories.
INGATHER will be custom tailored and easily implemented onto your website by a live link, widget, or badge (similar to how opentable is)-- and will also link back to you as well!
In supporting 'INGATHER: Stories of Chicago Chefs' Favorite Farmers', you are helping tell the stories of our farmers and our food. This is an important part of growing our local food economy and supporting sustainable agriculture. You will receive updates, vibrant photography, and, of course, being able to utilize this great resource.
I hope that you will join me and my pals on this adventure in our beautiful heartland: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Wisconsin... Please, make a pledge! And tell a friend or two!
I hope you have a wonderful and most delicious summer!!

*Sustainable agriculture is a way of raising food that is healthy for consumers and animals, does not harm the environment, is humane for workers, respects animals, provides a fair wage to the farmer, and supports and enhances rural communities.
