I want to keep HM Magazine in print in spite of the poor economy and the hurting music industry and the scaled-back marketing world in environment where new technology expands the way we can deliver new content. We have expanded our delivery of content (covering the Christian hard music scene) in a variety of ways for over a decade (the hmmag.com website, online/digital editions of each issue since 2007, twitter, facebook, myspace and our iPhone app). We plan on stepping it up with a new cross-platform app (iPhone, iPad, Android, etc) that will deliver the content each new issue of HM Magazine. While it may not make sense to go digital to save print, we believe that by creating a new revenue stream (in addition to the traditional subscriptions + newsstand sales + advertising) that we'll bring health to our magazine's business model. In other words, helping our digital side expand and grow will keep our print side afloat.
Here's our plan: We've acquired programming and development of the HM Magazine app. This will put a new, full issue of HM Magazine on the iPhone, iPad, Android and most other common platforms before this summer (probably as soon as our next April/May/June issue). This will be sold in iTunes and other online outlets for an average of $1.99 per issue.
Our campaign to roll this out will include purchasing and giving away two iPads to raise awareness, excitement and buzz regarding the new apps. We will not only be marketing this in the pages of our own HM Magazine, but in a print ad in Alternative Press as well.
We hope to raise enough money with this t-shirt project (in other words, exceeding our project goal) so that we can fund this promotional campaign properly.
