"Still Around" is the "The HIV Story Project's" most ambitious art project so far: We challenge 16 local filmmakers to make 16 5-minute short films about people living with HIV. The end result will be a video AIDS Quilt for the 21st Century about those still around - a feature-length compilation and celebration of life, that represents people of all ages, ethnic backgrounds, genders, and sexual orientations. 8 films are completed, 8 films are ready to be filmed, crews and protagonists are ready to go, but we need $8,000—to finance equipment, food, transportation and post production. (By clicking on the link above, you can see clips from a few of our so far completed films in a little video, we made for our Kickstarter page.)
Our approach is simple: We connect well-known local filmmakers with individuals who are living with HIV/AIDS and together they create a video portrait. Anything goes: from straight forward vérité doc, to music video, dance film, narrative, experimental film - as long as it captures the spirit and personality of the individual whose story the film tells. Our project is already endorsed by the Berlin International Film Festival in Germany and we are on the radar of The Sundance International Film Festival.
As an art project and a compilation, the films will be reminding people at festivals around the world, that in 2011, its 30th year, the pandemic is still around, that people who are HIV+ are still being stigmatized and that there are still too many new infections world wide. As an educational tool the individual films will be offered to HIV/AIDS non-profit organizations - free of charge - to use for outreach.
By the end of 2010 we need to finish the rest of the 16 short films in order to reach our goals:
A) Deliver the full compilation by October 2010 on time for the Sundance and Berlin International Film Festival deadlines, two of the world's most important festivals.
B) Create desperately needed video content that can be used by non-profits for HIV education in the year 2011, the 30 year anniversary of AIDS at a time when very few artists are interested in dealing with AIDS.
Our biggest challenge: The festival submission deadlines are in late September/October 2010. In order to have a shot at making it into either one of them, we need to complete the compilation by the fall of 2010. Help us raise the money to finish our compilation so that we can send it off to Sundance and Berlin and raise awareness about AIDS 30 years into the pandemic!
About us: "The HIV Story Project" is a San Francisco/Bay Area media collective and non-profit organization that creates content about HIV/AIDS.
