The Ypsi Project began as a daily photo assignment of either-local structures or of people living / working in Ypsi, though it quickly grew into meeting and speaking with people about what living here has meant to them; approaching local artist who really help seed a love for this town; chance conversations with people who've spent the better part of their lives rebuilding the community one business and block at a time.
It has lead to exploring the corners of this city that have been easy to overlook in the last 6 years I've lived here.
The event will feature large-portraits of more than 100 people who were kind enough to participate in the Ypsi Project, all of these selected prints are accompanied by stories and descriptions that tell of how long they've called Ypsi home, or what it is that keeps them here.
The exhibit itself will be held at the end of May in the old VG Kids office, thanks to the generosity of James Marks - it's a really exciting location being it's right in the middle of downtown (on Michigan Ave).
The whole event will have a very DIY approach to it - basically we're making all the prints and mounting them ourselves with IKEA wiring and setting out a table with some snacks...
Really we just want a chance for everyone to drop by and see all their portraits hanging together in one place; and have a special night to recognize the diversity of the people that make up Ypsi. Plus there's snacks, so even if you don't like the portraits there's that. It's win, win.
Thanks to your support...
We're putting this entire exhibit together ourselves. All of your amazing support goes towards cost of prints, renting the venue, promotional materials and everything else needed to pull this off.
