A few years ago I was booked 2 perform at HaikuFest, an annual affair by Regina Badiocchi 2 celebrate the art of haiku and young creatives. On the way 2 that performance I realized that my planned presentation did not include any actual haiku. Though it was not a requirement, I felt that it would only B appropriate 2 share some. So on that greenline train 2ward downtown Chicago I got 2 writing. Pleased with what had been created, those 10 or so poems became part of writing challenge issued by my friend and author Deana Dean Anderson (Boy Crazy) to write 30 poems N 30 days.
These poems were decidedly reflective of the time; a time of abject police brutality against Black and Brown people; a time of deplorable politics and politicians; a time of individual strides and collective awakening; a time of hashtag activism and digital disruption. It was (is) a time that almost forced me 2 keep writing and posting and speaking up and out about what was going on around us. It was 400 days B4 I forced myself 2 stop. This is what U will find inside of the pages of "Haiku 4 Justice: 365+ Day Commentary on (In)justice In America and Abroad - Poetry In the Age of Social Media."
This will B my 1st written release. Barring inclusion N a number of anthologies and other publications my poetic work has been relegated 2 albums and live performances. I love the stage and the freedom and release it confers. I love the live element, the musicians I work with, the energy we create and share with the audiences we have connected with. I never NEVER had any intention of writing a book. This is fitting as I also never NEVER had any intention of becoming a poet in the 1st place. My aim was 2 design environmentally-conscience residential buildings. The Universe had a different plan and here I am.
The book is ready. I sat on it 4 years, unconsciously nervous about sharing it but I've had some amazingly encouraging family, friends, administrators and students whose voices rang louder than my self-doubts. It still took a while and is even plaguing me as I type this but the time is now. The work is complete, all the legal parts R N place and I have truly been the only 1 holding this project up. I'm getting out of my own way (UGH!) and making use of this platform to make this piece de resistance available 4 your enjoyment.
Here I am seeking enough generous contributors to back the 1st run of this book. It's a book about independent voices so it's only proper that it is an independently released project. I'm telling stories, 17 syllables at a time, that the mass media will ignore, distort or sanitize from the perspective of those who would honestly rather 4get (and often do) but R affected the most. I know it's not "popular" or as loud or catchy as weaponized music video degradation but it's real, really real, and I believe that there R an abundance of people who R looking 4 a read like this and will pre-order their very own copy right here and now.
The cost of manufacturing includes the printing of each 6"X9" U.S. trade, perfect bound paperback (the limited hardcover copies will obviously B on hardback) on premium paper. This campaign will cover e-conversion and shipping costs of the physical run. Hopefully, there will B something left 4 marketing, promotion and securing a spot 4 the release.
The 1st official release gathering will B on June 19, 2019, popularly known as Juneteenth (Thank U, Joy). Though this 1st affair will B held N Chicago, with your backing this book will be available worldwide through the POD printer I use. Those in Chicago may come 2 the release event and get their pre-ordered book signed by me personally and of course we're going 2 make that event FUNKY. Those who R not or cannot may have their book signed and shipped with all the loving energy infused N2 your copy and assessable when U open it up.
When this campaign ends, through your contributions, the book will B available through most online retailers all the world and over we'll spread this good lovin' 2gether.
Risks and challenges
As a full-time artist 4 the last 20 years I've learned that any project is a risk. I have a nice reach and circle of supporters through my music. I don't know how well that will translate 2 this written word. I hope U trust my work enough at this point 2 know that I put my heart and soul N2 making this a high quality project. No shorts were taken and no artists were harmed N the making of this book. My expectation is 2 sell 100,000 copies of this book. All I know how 2 do is 2 keep working at it until I do.
I kept my asking goal small. It's small enough 2 cover a modest release. All of the tips I read about doing these things said 2 work in every cent that the creation of a given project would entail but this is also an all or nothing kind of campaign so I made the goal extremely reachable with the hopes that it reaches many of U who I do not yet know but look 4ward 2 connecting with through this and future work. The biggest challenge was me sitting here putting all this 2gether. Again, I need 2 get over myself. That part is being done as U read this.
The 2nd biggest challenge is 2 insure that this campaign reaches U where U R. I hope that in addition 2 ordering yourself a copy, U will deem this worthy enough of your time and energy 2 share this campaign with the simple push of a button 2 your circle of influence. That small action is invaluable 2 me and this campaign. I appreciate that immensely.
The last challenge is the short period of this campaign. According 2 the tips, campaigns that R most successful run 4 60 days. I don't have that kind of time. In homage 2 my ancestors and 2 keep me from procrastinating any further than I already have I'm running this thing over a couple of weeks with the objective of using the short time 2 motivate me 2 go as hard as possible 2 rise 2 the challenge. I ask U 2 assist me N this cause and thank U N advance.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
