Owlgirls History:
New York City, 1940, things are not always quite what they seem. Three sisters live in a typical three-story building in SoHo above a mortuary, only they are quite atypical of “regular” New Yorkers. The three women (Magda, Martha, and Maggie) are the “Owlgirls” (so-called because they have the heads of Owls and the bodies of humans). These three live in a kind of shadowy, mystical corner of reality. The folks who live in the neighborhood know of the women but try to stay away from them as much as possible. These three sisters have a mystical connection to Death (an old woman who appears to them and often talks to Gebedhia, the owner of the mortuary and lover of the oldest sister).
From time-to-time the sisters do the bidding of Death tracking down creatures that don’t quite belong on this plane of existence. They also, occasionally, investigate murders, unsolved cases, and assist in sundry other paranormal activities on behalf of local individuals. One day in a firefight, a sister dies and the other swears revenge. They contact Death to ask her to restore their beloved sister. In a kind of séance, Death appears and offers them a deal: their sister back to life if they become Death’s eyes in the world, and if they will help her to find some creatures. They will hunt down and neutralize demons and spirits that infest the planet. They may act during the night and exploit their capacity to conduct the demons or spirits in their dens. The women accept the covenant and the third sister back to life.
It is through this transaction that they have become Furies: female personifications of vengeance. They must avenge the killings and torture murderers. They represent the remorse arose from acts of violence. They will try demons hidden among the humans who make heinous crimes, or upset the balance of people. Eventually, the Owlgirls will travel anywhere to track down these demons. They will travel to Prague to find a demon dinning form of crow that haunts a cemetery. Or to Africa in search of a tribe beset by evil spirits. Not always the demons have human form and often Owlgirls follow the stories of folklore.
The series is not only a period piece (taking place in the ‘40s) but will maintain a gloomy atmosphere, almost Gothic-like experience for the reader. Playing off events of the time period in which they exist. The first five-part story arc will find them living in SoHo, and dealing with
the local threat of a NYC Cappo who wants to exploit their power for his own gain (which essentially kick-starts their story and builds the bridge between them and death). We learn the background of the Owlgirls, and witness the real start of their investigations. Gebedhia , the undertaker takes up their cause (as he is so totally in love with Magda the oldest) and helps them with the information dates from the dead before being buried.
Death itself often informs the dead of the help available to them in the afterlife and/or their still living relatives that the sisters can provide. The demons and spirits will be hidden among the people and can be anywhere. They may have likeness or not human. However, the three Owlgirls discover the demons, according to local histories, or lore and try to bring them back into their world.
Creative crew
The Owlgirls themselves are the creation of artist Rachele Aragno, who lives in Italy, and provides the pencils, inks and ink washes for the Owlgirls story. Dave Ryan provides art direction and enhancement as well as editing, and written (based on Rachele’s synopsis), by writer Robert J. Sodaro.
