(UPDATE: Nov. 25: We've added a couple of great new rewards for those of you who want to appear as an animated character, but for whom the existing tiers were just a little too far out of reach. Check out Hovercraft Full of Eels and Nyancatamaran, below!)
Are you a fan of traditional hand-drawn animation? Are you a nerd or a geek? Do you love it when your pop culture gets mashed up in exciting new ways? Then help us satisfy that itch with a brand new animated music video combining the nerdery goodness of geek-folk rocker Jonathan Coulton with a classic style of animation from days of yore. Here's a sneak preview:
Alex Bradley is an award-winning animator, illustrator, and motion graphics artist, and the creator of the H.P. Lovecraft-based web comic, Miskatonic University. He has also created independent films and commercials for Looney Labs games. His wife Renée Camus is a writer, former dancer, and pop culture enthusiast working in entertainment journalism.
Alex and Renée are both Sea Monkeys, which means they’ve attended (all three) previous JoCo Cruise Crazy events. JCCC is an annual Caribbean cruise for nerds featuring Internet musicians Jonathan Coulton, Paul and Storm, and a variety of other guest artists.
The first year of the cruise, Paul and Storm announced a video contest asking what will happen on JoCo Cruise Crazy. In response, Alex created an animated video based on the Superfriends, with cartoon likenesses of Jonathan as Superman, Paul and Storm as the Wonder Twins, Wil Wheaton as Gleek, and the various other guests making up the other members of the Justice League.
This set a precedent, and Alex has challenged himself to create a new homage animation every year. The second year’s video paid tribute to He-Man.
For JoCo Cruise Crazy 3, Alex upped his game by taking on a very ambitious style: Anime.
For JCCC4, Alex plans to make his most ambitious animated homage yet. This time, Alex will take on the king of animation: Disney. He will recreate the opening sequence of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, but instead of Belle walking through her small provincial town, it will feature an animated Jonathan talking about all that is amazing about JoCo Cruise Crazy. Alex will also write an original song to go with the video.
Lots of special rewards are available in varying levels, from basic updates, downloads, DVDs, and prints, to visual and audio guest appearances in the video. Last year’s anime also included animated appearances from friends. This year it’s your turn!
Please help us make this video the best it can be. Thank you, and hope to see you on JCCC4.
Risks and challenges
These videos are all made from 2-D cel animation, like the early days, which means that Alex draws each frame by hand. As much as computers and modern technology make this process faster, it is still arduous and time consuming. The low end of the standard rate for professional cel animation is $150 per second, which means that a 60-second video would cost about $9,000. Your donations will help offset the costs of production and labor for the new video and the various rewards.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
