MAGIC DESCRIPTION CARDS for Writers, Storytellers, and GMs.
Over 100 cards with over 600 System-Neutral phrases to help depict fantasy fiction magic. Designed for writers, storytellers, and GMs.
This project will only be funded if it reaches its goal by Sun, July 29 2018 3:01 PM UTC +00:00.
Every tabletop gamer has been around a table when something like this happens:
“I cast Fireball on this area.”
“Cool, that hits all these bad guys, and they fail their save.”
“Sweet, they take 8d6 of damage, so that’s 28 points of damage each.”
Do you see a problem with this? It's rather boring, isn't it? It lacks the flavor and the deep narration that makes role-playing games so fun.
Could you go by the magic descriptions that the books give you? Sure, but do you want your cool, one of a kind character to use the descriptions we’ve all heard a thousand times before? Moreover, that assumes that you are using the spells from the book at all, what do you do if you’ve made your own homebrewed spells?
What if there are multiple spellcasters in your group? Does your elf necromancer cast a certain spell the same way that a human druid does? Sure, magic could be described uniformly in your world where all spells look the same, regardless of the kind of caster using them, but doesn’t that sound terribly dull to you?
With these magic description cards, you could make a deck that makes your spell list wholly unique and fit perfectly with the character concepts you created. The best part of any story is the action scenes, and there is no reason why the big dang hero fighters should get all the fun. Regardless if you or your players are a warlock, wizard, cleric, or something else, everyone could use some help in deepening their roleplay.
A GM or storyteller who wants to hoard these cards could make their NPC casters so much deeper and more menacing and makes it easier to hide what the spellcaster is capable of by hiding the actual spells behind these rich narrative descriptions.
A Must-Have for Homebrewers, World Builders, and Game Designers!
Homebrewers and world-builders, these cards will work so well for you. Not only will they stimulate your imagination, these cards can cut the time you need to write your own wonderfully clever, imaginative, and memorable descriptions. You could use our descriptions as the basis for your one of a kind and brand-new spells or magical traps.
Writers: “Show, Don’t Tell," right? Even veteran authors sometimes struggle with the more delicate nuances of showing versus telling abstract concepts like magic and spellcraft. These cards will certainly help inspire you and bring you the end of that chapter or scene more quickly. The Magic Description Cards are the perfect tool to banish even the most stubborn case of writer's block. When you back this project, you’re not just getting a reference guide to magical descriptions, you're unlocking a proven, cost-effective tool to save time and generate more ideas than any other fantasy adventure and historical fiction tool on the market.
System Neutral: Do you have more than one game on your docket using different systems? Perhaps, a FATE game on the first weekend, a Shadowrun one on the second, and run a Vampire: The Masquerade LARP on the last weekend. Maybe you see some of the cool supplemental products and hate that they only ever get made for Dungeons & Dragons or Pathfinder, not the more obscure game you and your playgroup love. What you need and want is something that can be used across platforms, regardless of the type of system. Our Magic Description Cards don't affect or interact with the mechanics of the game you're playing. They change up the flavor of the spells used, so that when your buddy wants to play Savage Worlds one day, but Numenera or 13th Age the next, you can still use our amazing cards.
The team at Conflict Games knows that every tabletop is a unique battlefield where the terrain, atmosphere, and even game system can be totally unique to your group. Cards that describe details that don't fit your battle aren't useful, and that's why the writing philosophy behind the Magic Description Cards was something that the developers spent weeks hammering out before ever creating the first card. Although there are two dozen writing rules, here are the critical ones:
- We don’t detail the person(s) receiving or issuing magic.
- We don’t mention blood specifically, but generalizations like “fluids” works.
- We don’t detail the battle surface. It could be anywhere, from space to underwater.
- Nothing Cheesy, Nothing Corny, Nothing Racy
- Gamers want to be cool; let’s make them sound cool!
The cards are also designed to be useful, no matter where the battle takes you, by focusing on how magic manifests without dictating the environment. We're also aware that what you're fighting could be anything from a sentient ooze to a mechanical rhinoceros, so we never dictate what the target of the spell looks like, sounds like, or even whether it bleeds. Those details are all within the control of the GM or Author. Our focus is on improving the narrative by offering writers, GMs, and the players inspiring ways to describe the mighty powers they wield, and that's why the Magic Description Cards are perfect for your gaming table.
A note on utility spells like 'Invisibility', 'Detect Traps', 'Speak with the Dead', etc... While there are a lot of spells out there, we wanted to focus the main thrust of the product to damage-dealing spells. But fear not, cards for those other kinds of spells may very well be stretch goals for this campaign.
What are Vectors: Vectors are categories of magic or schools of magic, if you will. Not all Vectors will get their own card deck; some may be Stretch Goals. Here are the vectors included in this initial offering, in no particular order:
1: DEMONIC—Dark Thaumaturgy where demonic forces are manipulated or generated. (In opposite to Angelic Magic).
2. LIFE—Restore the organic material to their optimal health, curing damaged or withered organisms, wounds, broken bones, low vitality, and diseases/poisoning.
3. SPIRITS—Revolves around channeling, summoning or using the power and knowledge of spirits or ancestral souls to achieve their goals.
4. DEATH—Involves Necromancy, undeath, and or the manipulation and generation of negative energy.
5. AIR—Involves the generation, shaping and manipulation of air, the common name given to the layer of atmospheric gases and various compounds.
6. FIRE—Create, shape and manipulate fire, the rapid oxidation of a material in the exothermic chemical process of combustion.
7. DIVINE—The generation or manipulation of holy, celestial or positive energies. In opposite to Demonic Magic.
8. WATER—The ability to create, shape and manipulate water, or inorganic compound with liquid, gas (steam, water vapor)
9. FLESH—Create, shape, manipulate or repurpose flesh or organic material of which the victim is made of.
10. EARTH—Create, shape and manipulate earth including most minerals and mineral compositions regardless of their state (mountain, boulder, sand or dust dirt, soil, etc.)
11. SHADOW—Create, shape and manipulate shadows and stages of darkness.
12. FROST —the generation, shaping, and manipulation of ice, water frozen into a solid state
PLUS 4 MORE VECTORS— Final designs for the last FOUR vectors will be voted on and dictated by this project’s backer community. This process will be implemented via our Facebook page. Direct communications via email will also be used for those super-backers who wish to have a heroic role in their investment.

Magic Delivery Methods
Methods are common ways magic manifest itself in a world. The three methods this Kickstarter will focus on are Area, Blast, and Touch. Although, with your help, further methods (like Barriers) will be added via stretch goals.
For example, you are utilizing a character who uses fire-causing magic. Imagine pulling the EARTH card and simply selecting one of the magic descriptions listed right there on the card. Read it aloud, filling in the specifics as you need. And suddenly, you're breathing life and excitement into your magic-related combat. Then, if the damage dealt by the character is going to finish the enemy off, there are Death descriptions for that as well, conveniently marked off by a skull icon. Read off the Death description and give your character a thrilling and vivid description of their triumph!
Card Physical Breakdown:
Please Note: Due to the low inventory levels and complexity, it would add to shipping, the printed Conflict PVP books, maps, screens, and etc. will not be a part of this Kickstarter rewards. Instead, you may purchase physical products for immediate delivery at www.conflictgames.com.
The Storyteller's Deck is the result of all the booster packs from the Combat Description Cards Kickstarter. We had so many stretch goals in our last campaign, it needed a deck of its own.
What's in the Combat Description Card Deck?
Here's an unboxing video:
We have much more to offer! If we can push beyond our basic goal, there are a number of additional Stretch Goals with which you can further expand your verbal combat and magic repertoire!
1. Premium, High-Grade Paper 350 GSM + UV Coating
— 25k Stretch Goal —
Our First Stretch Goals If we are fortunate enough to get to the 25k mark, we will add the following reward: Protective Card Coating & Premium Art Paper ($25,000): A protective coating will be placed over each and every card to help guard them against spills, rough handling, and those who regularly have gooey fingers (you know who you are). Your investment will be much better protected with this card coating! We will also increase the density of the paper used in the cards from 250 to 350 gsm. What does that mean? An improvement to the density will increase the appearance of the printing and make the card stock even more substantial and harder to damage. That's right, this reward is both protective and appealing!
2. App Repair and Improvements
— 28k Stretch Goal —
This Stretch Goal is a necessary first step for the future stretch goals we are announcing below. One of the reasons the app was not a part of the initial Kickstarter offering is because I was aware of issues with the app and the amount of work needed to bring the app to a high level of satisfaction. I am personally unable, and frankly unwilling, to spend my time programming the app repair and improvements. Despite my experience in managing offshore teams, I previously had a tough time with nefarious programmers. For all these reasons, the app was not initially offered for this Kickstarter. However, all of that is way behind us. I found an app development team that I trust will significantly improve the app at a reasonable rate. Thankfully this allows me to put the app and all the wonderful items below back on the table. Therefore, our 28k stretch goal will be the repair and improvement of the existing Storyteller App for Android and Apple devices.
3. Magic Description Cards App Additions -Add-on
— 30k Stretch Goal add-on —
This Stretch Goal will allow us to add the Magic Description Cards' content to the existing Storyteller Deck for both Android and Apple devices. Due to the expense of programming, developer app store fees, SIT and UAT testing, the stretch goal will be facilitated via a Kickstarter add-on, meaning, to take advantage of this you must increase your current pledge amount by ten dollars. The pledge manager will take care of the rest after the campaign.
Here is what you get: By increasing your pledge by $10, you gain access to every Magic Description Card committed to in this Kickstarter. Every card will all be added to the app. Currently, that’s 16 vectors with the potential of more via new stretch goals. After the Kickstarter, each of the sixteen vectors will be priced between .99 cents or $1.99. I can only guarantee the price of $10 for the whole collection during the Kickstarter campaign. Request for similar pricing after July 29th will be denied. Sorry. We believe we can deliver the content two months after the physical shipments are completed. That’s roughly at the end of the first quarter of 2019, but probably sooner.
4. New Method: Barriers!
—30,500 Stretch Goal —
5. New Method: Barriers!
—31,000 Stretch Goal —
6. Introducing the Voice of Czath
— 33k Stretch Goal —
Through the Storyteller App, you’ll be able to play an audio version of certain* Magic Description Cards. Clearly, you must have the app, and the Magic Description Cards content additions add-on to take advantage of this. However, when you do, you will be treated to Nathaniel's Voice of Czath.
Here is what the Voice of Czath had to say about this Stretch Goal:
How freaking cool is that!! I love it! Please help be welcome Nathaniel to the team!
Here is the voice of Czath narrating are a few more descriptions:
#1 Frost -touch- Hoar Frost
Divine - Blast - Candescent
What you get: If this Stretch Goal is reached, one Vector of Magic will be narrated by the Voice of Czath. Please note, you must have the Storyteller Deck App purchased and installed on your Apple or Android device. You must also have access to the new Magic Description Cards content. Again, this can be obtained through the aforementioned $10 add-on.
We anticipate delivering the first audio narrations roughly around the same time as the Magic Description Cards add-on. Although, we will be adding samples to this campaign page as they become available.
At the end of the Kickstarter Campaign, we will send a survey to the email associated with your Kickstarter account using the CrowdOx pledge manager system. You will be able to choose your add-on orders and provide your shipping information at that time. If you change addresses before we ship your rewards, you will be able to access your survey anytime.
Shipping in the USA will be included. International shipping will be calculated once all the stretch goals and weights are confirmed. International shipping will be charged via our pledge manager after the Kickstarter campaign ends.
This campaign will be US-Customs Friendly, CA-Customs Friendly, UK-Customs Friendly, EU-Customs Friendly, AU-Customs Friendly, and NZ-Customs Friendly. If you live in any of the regions listed and receive any additional charges for receiving your package, please send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org and include a copy of your customs receipt. We will then reimburse you via our Pledge manager (or PayPal).
Please note these are only estimates. The final cost may increase, or decrease based on the total number of shipments and current postal prices at the time of shipping. Free Shipping in the USA is limited to one reward tier per backer.

Risks and challenges
*The final design of the Magic Description Cards deck and Stretch Goals may vary as many of the graphics above are digitally produced.
All projects carry some risk. Fortunately, the Magic Description Card Deck is a fairly straightforward product. The foreseen risks involved include shipping logistics and the unexpected cancellation of contracted artists, writers, editors or product manufacturers. In the case of contract cancellation, the contractor will need to be replaced. Which in turn, could delay the project's completion but won’t prevent its completion. In regard to shipping, logistics could become burdensome. We are unable to control the fact that domestic and out-of-the-US shipping costs seem to be spiraling out of control. However with our target funding goal, we don't foresee this preventing the project from succeeding; although, it may impact delivery dates.
The one guarantee we can make is that we will be transparent with issues and communicate them to our backers as quickly as we can.
We strongly believe our target funding goal is sufficient to complete our vision for the product.
If you're as excited about this card deck as we are, then help us exceed that goal - we have much more we wish to do for this card series. This is just the first step in an exciting journey! Join us!
