WESTERN. WUXIA. WILD.
Imagine: A fantasy world, but not one based on Medieval/Dark Ages European culture and myth, but rather one based on the inspirations of the Spaghetti Western and Chinese Wuxia. Add steampunk elements. Mix well.
A fantasy world that's Stephen King's The Dark Tower meets The Storm Riders meets Deadwood meets Afro Samurai meets The Wild Wild West meets Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon meets Django meets The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr. meets House of Flying Daggers and more.
A fantasy world that's explored through a constantly-updated website, a tabletop role-playing adventure game, a web series, artwork, fiction, comics and much, much, more. A fantasy world that is shaped by its own fan community.
FAR WEST is a transmedia project -- the setting is explored via multiple platforms and linked narratives. We've already launched the website, http://intothefarwest.com , which features fiction vignettes, artwork, development updates, inspirography, and more. We are now launching the adventure game, where you and your friends can create the adventures of wandering warriors who fight for their beliefs, the oppressed, or their own interests in an endless frontier that lies beyond the confines of civilization.
If you'd like to read more about the development of FAR WEST, you can start here: http://intothefarwest.com/2011/06/01/beginning/
UPDATE: We've reached our minimum funding level, and exceeded it. But we're still going onward and upward with new goals and new rewards! Currently, the additional rewards are:
- LEGENDS OF THE FAR WEST, an exclusive supplement that will be available in print to all backers who've pledged at the $50 level and higher (and ebook/Kindle/PDF for all backers, regardless of pledge level).
- TALES OF THE FAR WEST, a short fiction anthology, featuring stories by Scott Lynch, Matt Forbeck, Dave Gross and many more, which will be sent in digital format (eBook/Kindle/PDF) to all backers, regardless of pledge level).
- PROSPERITY, a PDF detailing a complete Far Western settlement, with all citizens statted and all buildings provided as miniature-scaled floorplans and papercraft models, which will be provided to all backers, regardless of pledge level.
- FAR WEST POSTER MAP, a limited-edition poster featuring the map of the Far West from the endpapers of the Adventure Game hardcover, done by cartographer Andrew Law, to all backers who've pledged at the $65 level and higher (and in digital format to all other backers, regardless of pledge level).
We hope that you join us on this adventure. Welcome to our place. Keep your boots off the table and your weapons holstered, if ya please. We run a respectable joint.

We've reached the minimum level we set for successful funding, but the more we raise, the more we can do. Check out the updates to see our new goals and the rewards that we're adding once those goals are achieved.
The Limited Edition hardcover of the Adventure Game, as well as the Ebook, Kindle and PDF, will be available in December 2011. Electronic versions will be sent to donors at the same time the book is sent to the printer.
Yes, and No.
The Limited Edition, full-color hardcover version of the game will not be available via local game stores-- aside from at those retailers who have participated in the special retailer-only pledge level here. It is exclusive to this Kickstarter only.
Some time in 2012, a black-and-white softcover version of the FAR WEST Adventure Game, which will contain less material than the Limited Edition, will be made available through distribution to local game stores. This softcover edition will be fully compatible, but will not feature exclusive content that will only appear in the Limited Edition.
Additionally, a "Basic Game" -- an electronic version of the rules needed to play (but not rules for customization, such as the kung-fu style design rules, for example), will be available for free download in late 2011/early 2012. This will be similar to "starter" versions released for other role-playing products in the past.
A brief overview of the system being used for the FAR WEST Adventure Game can be found here:
The FAR WEST website, http://intothefarwest.com , is now live, and features development updates, inspirography, fiction vignettes, art and is your central source for the entire FAR WEST experience.
The next project already underway is a FAR WEST fiction line, available in electronic and print formats.
Development has also begun on the FAR WEST web series (which will be available for free streaming on the FAR WEST website, and then collected for purchase as downloads or DVD/Blu-Ray), as well as a handful of other projects which are still in the early stages.
Yes, they do. We do not charge extra for that -- International customers get shafted too often, so we're of the opinion that we can afford to let the extra cost be subsidized by the domestic orders which are in the majority.
