Last June, I learned that Skarka had done work on the Star Trek Adventures RPG. I pinged Modiphius on Twitter, and was told that it was for a future (un-announced) book. So I bought the core book, and pre-ordered a couple of other books from my FLGS. I figured I'd just boycott Skarka-touched works and buying other books in the line would be okay.

It was pointed out last week that Skarka lists both the Core Book and the Beta Quadrant sourcebook (which I have pre-ordered) on the credits page of his website.

Modiphius didn't lie to me, but they certainly misled me.

They also left Skarka's name out of the credits on both products. They claim it was a mistake, but leaving his name out of two different products when they knew he was a problematic choice? That's super-shady.

I will buy no further Modiphius product until Skarka has met his obligations to Far West backers.

And I have informed them of this.

      Well said Jesse.

I have read a few comments in relation to the most recent update. Talk about a new level of white-hot rage. I am not a fan of D6 either. A monumental waste of time. This kickstart project was funded in 2011. Two Presidential Elections later and what do we really have?

Two movies of the Man with Iron Fists. Three Seasons of Into the Badlands.

This is way beyond the money for me. I know I spent too much for a promise to an oasis of drama and adventure. Well honestly, it was dramatic and adventurous to follow some kind of path. At the end of the road, all I have seen was a mud hole full of night soil.

Please, just fill in the rabbit hole. Nothing more to see here. Walk away from the industry. Sell the company for a $1, and let the new owners deal with the fallout. I am sorry I tried to work for you or with you at any level.

The core setting material was the fool's idea of showing off. The mechanics never mattered.

    4. Steve Brown on

I'm not a fan of D6, but I'm certainly not going to complain about it. It's the setting that sells this game. I am happy Gareth has his mojo back and hopefully we'll see this completed this year. :-)

    5. Ikaros on

I'm genuinely happy for this update. Personally, I'm a big fan of D6 system

    6. David Cummings on

I was concerned about the change in system...I was really looking forward to the tweaks to d20. But even pathfinder is working g on their second edition, and DND is two editions past the old d20.

But I backed this cause I like weird westerns. I just got Westbound which is quite different from.... like....anything. so this setting is still the star.

Then he says d6 and I breathe a HUGE sigh of relief. That's my second favorite system, and I'm sure I don't know the math as well as Gareth, but I know it fairly well. I just backed jerry Grayson's Mythic d6, so I'm all ready for some Western d6 goodness. I hope this really motivates you to finish this. I'm still looking forward to it.

Interesting update. I'll be the first to say it, the game is late blah blah blah we all know it, plenty of valid reasons to doubt we'll ever see it and at this point promises on deliverables have little meaning. We know that, everyone knows that.

But, I'm 100% for switching to D6 at this point. If it comes out and we get some D6 goodness I'll be a much happier camper.

    8. Michael Ostrokol on

Has it really been a year since the last update? How time flies ...

    9. Eric Franklin on

On Twitter, Skarka is claiming release will be this year.

I'm sure we all 100% believe this date.

    10. David Cummings on

I received my physical copy of Westbound, a fantasy Western. The Kickstarter started in September of last year. Small company, first Kickstarter. I know we've all gotten plenty of Kickstarter projects that started after this one, some slower, some hit with delays, some faster. But I can now count Kickstarter that have started and fulfilled since our last update. This one I chose to highlight because it's a small company, not Savage world's, not 7th sea, not Torg. Just a small company that started and the time since we've even had an update. Fun!

By “life” Gareth means “my colossal lack of honesty and ability to do anything except whine”.

    12. Austin Stanley on

Yeah, I'll admit that kind of pissed me off. I mean I don't wish sickness of anyone (or any pet). But it seemed a lame reason not to just give a simple heads up. On how he was doing. Especially since he has found time to keep tweeting about all kinds of other stuff (including his favorite books).

It's become abundantly clear to me that "I'll update everyone when I'm done." Is just code for 'never.'

    13. Bill C. on

"Sorry, but I don't feel like I need to check in with you to ask if it's OK if I deal with the flu hitting my household, or my cat's cancer diagnosis. Yes, it was supposed to be January. Life got in the way. It happens."

For a Kickstarter that's about 7 years overdue, that's pretty rich.

    14. Austin Stanley on

      Here's the exchange.

His response pattern is erratic. I've didn't get responses from kickstarter communications before this twitter exchange. Nor have I ever got anything back from him via email.

In any case, I'm trying to wash my hands of it. He told me 90 days, with the implication that the book might be out before then. I'm not going to hold my breath on either of those things, but given his lack of communication, I think you all deserve to be informed.

      Chris Groff on

He did an early round of refunds for some users, I was lucky to get in on that window and got refunded the difference between the print and PDF levels. I had no objections to paying for the book of short stories as I really enjoyed it and should the PDF come out I'd still like to see it.

A friend of mine though tried to get a refund a week or so after I did and he was told he's in the next wave....that wave hasn't come and that was months ago now.

    16. Steve Brown on

@Austin, I've never had a problem contacting him through Kickstarter, barring one occasion he's always replied and usually within a few hours.

    17. Eric Franklin on

Austin: He may just block you on Twitter. I'm blocked there.

Of course, I got (most of) a refund already when I got my local Attorney General involved.

    18. Austin Stanley on

I suggest you contact him on Twitter. I have received responses from him there, ultimately culminating in a request for a refund to which I am supposedly 5th in line, and should be processed within 90 days.

    19. Missing avatar

      Eric Watt on

I've emailed him 3 times without any response at this point. I'm not confident that I'll get one either. I'm starting to get angry, about the silence.

    20. Eric Franklin on

I actually received the one Ken Whitman project I backed ("Knight's Quest Family Card Game"). It was an unplayable mess, but it does exist.

      Chris Groff on

Ken Whitman as the positive example... ahhh that's quality humor right there :-)

    22. trublunite

@Steve - if Gareth releases the PDF there will be an immediate call for the physical copies and that money was spent YEARS ago. Quite simply, there is no money to print, thus no PDF.

We all make mistakes. 4 years ago I was using Ken Whitman as an example of how to successfully run a KS. There's a video interview floating around where I say it. Sigh.

    23. Steve Brown on

Wow. Last update was May 1st 2017 and the last time Gareth posted here was Feb 26th 2017. Does anyone really think he's working on the project and has any intentions of delivering it? Looks like all the abuse he got wasn't totally unwarranted. I defended him when he was posting and replying to comments and whilst he was ill, but I can't see how this situation can be at all defensible for the last year.

Forget the physical books, what's the reason we haven't had a pdf yet? That's entirely under his control, that's just writing and layout and we had 75% of a book pretty soon after the KS started, that was over six years ago.

So disappointing. And I feel so foolish for ever being on his side.

    24. Ron Frazier on

Was just listening to the excellent soundtrack by Sam Billen and came here to see what activity there has been. I should have known better. I don't even care about the books anymore, and I backed for 2. I've already found a game that fills this niche. I'll count myself lucky to get the finished PDF this decade.

    25. Lee Langston on

Le Sigh! I am just going to assume I will never see this project come to life ever. I have TRIED to be patient, but I just cannot expect anything more from this. I will never be likely to purchase another game or project from this company.

    26. trublunite

      New Year!

      So, how late?

      Silence from the Twitter Master...

    27. Austin Stanley on

      Many happy returns?

    28. John Fiala

      Merry Christmas, folks!

    29. David Cummings on

I just received a hard cover copy of a rpg that I backed in July. So I have a completed Kickstarter project in my hand that was funded, edited, printed, and shipped all in between even getting an update on this project. Unless I missed it, we haven't had an update since May. An entire project completed faster than the process of doing layout for the last two-three chapters of Far West.

    30. Eric Franklin on

Even backers of Alas, Vegas are just now starting to get their books.

And some of them are already asking about the free copy of Far West that they've been promised. Because they'd somehow missed the news that Far West is effectively dead.

    31. Missing avatar

      Sam Reader on

Did anyone ever get the copy of Alas, Vegas that we were told we'd get for backing Far West a while back?

    32. trublunite

      7 months - no updates.

Gareth, just admit the funds are gone as is your inspiration and motivation.

Throw in the towel. At least it would be honest.

So, I peeked at some of his Twittering and noticed an old Tweet lamenting how Carrie Fisher and George Michaels died but Trump has outlived them. No matter your political slant that kind of mentality is vile. I greatly disagree with everything about our last President but I have and will never lament him not dying. Perhaps it would be OK for me to think the Grim Reaper should’ve taken you, Gareth, instead of, say, Prince? You’ve certainly earned the ire of many people, so is that OK? No. No, it’s most certainly not. Shame on you.

Gareth, you’re a horrid, deluded, arrogant piece of filth. You’re a blight who needs to just disappear from this hobby. You deserve absolutely nothing but ridicule and scorn. I sincerely hope that everyone who’s asked for a refund has gotten one.

Now, go and cry on Twitter. Run along. There’s a good, little boy.

    35. Austin Stanley on

Heh. You call it really worked up. But for Gareth, that was Tuesday... er Wednesday.

    36. John Fiala

Wow, Gareth's getting really worked up on twitter. It's probably not good for him.

As for the reddit thread, I think one of those shows up once a month. :)

    37. Austin Stanley on

Yeah that would go good with these bitter tears.

    38. John Fiala

Hey folks, how's it going? Have we run out of the onion dip yet? I can run out and get some more.

    39. Steve Brown on

I tweeted Gareth and got the following response:
"Sorry, Stephen. I didn't get notification of your KS PM. I decided to hold off on updates until I have something concrete to deliver."
"People are tired of hearing "soon" & [incremental progress detail here], so the next time backers hear from me it will be to deliver."

So there you go. I guess we won't hear anything until it's done. Not sure this is the right move, but that's the explanation for the radio silence.

    40. Eric Franklin on

I don't think he paid off the vocal critics - I think he blocked them so he doesn't have to see them anymore and they have a harder time responding to him.

    41. Steve Brown on

      Last update May 1st.

I PM'd him on August 17th and he replied same day with:

"Far West is going VERY well. A shake-up occurred which I'll get into in an update I'll be sending out soon, and it's resulted in a massive boost in productivity.

      More news soon."

Never had an update since. I also PM'd in on September 27th and he never replied.

He's still very active on Twitter.

Maybe he thinks he's paid off all the really vocal and critical people and the rest of us don't matter. Why does he behave like this and treating us with such disrespect? I am unable to defend him anymore and lost all patience with him. So disappointed.

    42. Tom Ryan on's been so long even "isfarwestoutyet" has gone dead.

what a joke...last update was May?

    43. Neal Dalton

Ben, there was just an update about that on the Alas Vegas site. Short answer: no.

    44. Ben McFarland on

Someone has a print copy of Alas Vegas? I have PDFs, but no softcover yet.

    45. Eric Franklin on

Someone using the Adamant Entertainment account just commented on Facebook:

"As to FAR WEST, keep your eyes open. We'll be updating Backers first, but will post an announcement here (and on the website) before the end of the year."

That's right, folks: We'll get AN ANNOUNCEMENT by the end of the year. Because that's never happened before. There is no history of announced release dates for this project, and so we have complete faith both that there will actually be an announcement and that said announcement will be accurate in its prediction. We are at war with Eastasia. We have always been at war with Eastasia.

    46. David Cummings on

Westbound kickstarter ended, and we already got the bare bones pdf for proofreading. We'll see if they get me a hardcover by the end of the year, like they say, but they are already way ahead of this one.

    47. Eric Franklin on

Step 1: E-mail Gareth. If (when) he shoots you down, go to step 2:

Step 2: You in the US? Contact your local Attorney General.

Outside of the US? Contact the Kansas Attorney General (as that is where Adamant is headquartered).

Most A/G offices have online contact forms to fill out. Most of the information you need is on Adamant Entertainment's website or here on Kickstarter.

    48. Aaron Roudabush on

So, how can I get my refund? I'm really tired of this. Even if we get the game (doubtful) I won't ever be able to play it without getting annoyed at it or mock it for the ridiculous time it might have taken to actually be made.
