ApocalypZe is a unique and thematic card game in which the object is simply to survive. Equipped with mechanics that set themselves apart from traditional card games across genres, the game requires a blend of strategy and patience to outlast your opponent while you conserve your resources and battle raiders.
The Crossing Lines expansion includes 2 new decks plus 6 additional cards for customization. Playable just by itself, Crossing Lines is an inexpensive way for new players to jump into the game. For veterans of the ApocalypZe, the expansion offers over 30 brand new cards including 2 new strongholds. The new cards bring an element to the game that has been a major interest of the players since its original publication.
ApocalypZe in the Media
What Took Us So Long?
It's been 18 months since Those Left Behind was released into stores. Throughout that time, we've been working to streamline the game, creating new cards and new strategies, testing, testing, and testing. As a fledgling company, we had a lot to learn.
Those Left Behind was well received by most players in our target audience. The rich theme and dramatic artwork pulled players in while the strategic gameplay kept them coming back for more. But there were improvements that needed to be made.
- We updated the rulebook, making it easier to understand and even tweaking a few rules to make the game run more smoothly.
- We identified broken cards and released errata.
- We invented a new winning condition that works through scavenging, allowing players to be proactive with their survivors.
- We released rules for team play and multiplayer free-for-all.
- We streamlined the card design on all new and reprinted cards.
And, yet, with all of our changes and improvements, ApocalypZe is still the same game it has always been, can still be played with the original cards. It is our chief concern that, no matter how many expansions we release, the cards that come out of that original box will always be as viable as they were the day they were released.
Crossing Lines is the first expansion to the ApocalypZe card game. Each set comes with 126 cards broken up into two 60 card decks and 6 cards for customization.
In addition to the Crossing Lines expansion, we are offering 3 Booster Packs. Each pack comes with 17 cards from either the original box or the Crossing Lines expansion. The packs have been designed to enhance the box and expansion, providing cards that players may want to explore with further copies. These cards have been selected by theme and are fixed in every booster pack. The 3 booster packs are:
- Character Legends, which includes unique characters and the cards that are played with them.
- Combat, which includes a variety of weapon cards and trumps for use during combat.
- Zombies, which includes a variety of zombies and attachments/wildcards/trumps that work with them.
In order to bring you a high quality product at such a low funding goal, we have decided to use a small press.
The Pros and Cons of a Small Press
A small press is a company that prints smaller quantities of games. When ApocalypZe was first funded, we made enough money to print a lot of games and go to retail. Because of today's crowded gaming and kickstarter environments, we decided that having the ability to literally name the number of copies we want was well worth the extra cost. This allows us to set a much lower funding goal and be assured of making the game.
The biggest pro, of course, is that the turnaround time from a small press is very quick and you will have your games in hand in only a few weeks.
Of course, since the cards themselves were costing more, we had to make a few adjustments.
- We are using a heavy cardstock that approximates the original cards, however the cardbacks may vary in hue, allowing players to see which cards come from which set. We recommend playing with card sleeves.
- There is no rulebook included with the 2 decks. The link to our website and a QR code will be on the box.
- The box is a plain white tuck box.
When all is said and done, we know that Crossing Lines introduces some wonderful innovation to the ApocalypZe card game. Those of you who play and enjoy the game, can't afford to miss out on this expansion.
ApocalypZe Those Left Behind Core Box - You can now get the retail version of the original game including all of the stretch goals AND the 2 bonus packs from the original Kickstarter for $40 (international please add $20 for shipping).
ApocalypZe Playmat - This gorgeous playmat is 24" x 14", large enough for your stronghold, your survivors, and your scavenging. Available for $15 (international please add $10 for shipping).
ApocalypZe Booster Packs - Booster packs are 17 pre-packaged cards that follow a specific theme. There are 3 different packs including the Combat & Weapons Pack, the Legends Pack, and the Zombies Pack. The complements of each pack can be found on our website
The stretch goals for the ApocalypZe card game are, of course, more cards. We created a special type of card for our stretch goals called a hybrid card. We've taken characters and other card types (attachments, trumps, wildcards) and melded them. We've unlocked 4 of these special cards (pictured below). Our 5th and 6th stretch goals are visible in the image. The first will be unlocked at $2500 and the second at $3000.
Risks and challenges
In 2013, we launched a campaign to fund our initial ApocalypZe offering entitled ApocalypZe - Those Left Behind. We funded in 3 days and were very excited to bring the game not only to our backers but to the retail market. Most risks and rewards are associated with printing and shipping issues. By going with a small press, we will have none of those. Rest assured, the artwork is complete, the cards have been tested, and the game is ready to roll. All we need is the money for the printer and more artwork for our next expansion.
Our risks come from perception. Though we know that we are putting out a high quality expansion on high quality cards, we wonder just how much the no-frills box will affect peoples' perception of our product. If we cannot fund Crossing Lines, it will put the future of the game in jeopardy. If it is successful, and hints at growth, you'll see another expansion, and not in another 2 years. If we are successful, the next expansion will come to kickstarter, in the same format, in just 4 months. The 3rd expansion is scheduled for 4 - 6 months after that. It is our goal to bring new ApocalypZe to our players 2 - 3 times a year for years and years to come.
That's a lot of pressure for an $825 goal.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
