Act of Kindness

If this project is successful, we will contribute one AV Club Production Slate to a local school (Austin, Hutto, or Round Rock, Texas) for every three Pledges of $50 or more.

Introducing the AV Club Production Slate, a solidly built, customizable production slate for students and professional filmmakers.

Filmmakers have used the production slate, also known as a clapperboard or just clapper, since the first talkies were created to synchronize the sound and picture and to mark the scene and take on each shot. The traditional slate includes the production title, the roll, scene, and take number, the director, camera operator, and date. Other slates display camera information such as lens, filter, frames per second, etc.

One problem I found is that you never have a slate with the information that you want so you stick tape on it and write in every blank spot you can find.

As a film teacher, I work every summer repairing the items students break during the school year. It’s not that my students typically mistreat the equipment; it’s more that the equipment isn’t usually designed to hold up to student use or even professional use. The production slates that I spend $30 to $40 for, all have weak hinge points that often break or screws that pull out.  So I decided to start making slates for my class.

I had 4 goals when I was designing the AV Club Production Slate:

  • Create a high quality production slate that would stand up to the abuse high school students typically put on equipment.
  • It needed to be marketable to professionals.
  • It needed to be useable with whiteboard markers.
  • It needed to be customizable.

We have designed and tested the slate and are ready to go to the next step. We need just a small amount to re-tool in order to produce the slates in any quantity. That's where we need you help.

The AV Club Production Slate measures 11” x 11” and is made from high quality materials. The main board is (12mm) ½” hardwood ply for stability and strength with a 1/8” acrylic top for marking with a standard whiteboard marker, the clapper sticks are solid ¾” x 1 ½ ” hardwood with enamel black and white stripe finish.

A standard 8 ½” x 11” sheet can be printed with your custom design or customized design from or freely downloadable templates that will be available on our website.

Even if you are not a filmmaker and just a film buff, or you know a film buff, the AV Club Production Slate would make a great conversation piece or gift by inserting your friend’s name as director or camera of his/her favorite film and add his/her birth date.

Changes we are making:

  • After getting feedback from users, instead of just painting the front of the clapper sticks, we will be painting them solid black with the white stripes on the front.
  • We will be using knurled screws to hold the acrylic sheet in the production version to make it easier to change the slate design.
  • The back will be made of 9 ply Baltic Birch, a higher quality ply than the prototype featured in the video.

Risks and challenges

There are no major risks or challenges related to this project. I have successfully hand crafted these slates for my classroom and tested them for durability.

The slates will be made using the same techniques I have refined in creating these prototypes. Scaling up production will be the biggest challenge. The focus will be on consistency and maintaining the same attention to detail while establishing the most efficient manufacturing methods.
