We all want the ability to create our own experiences and environments. The BYO Wine Rack transforms a normally static kitchen accessory into a dynamic focal point, giving you the ability to choose from different configurations and add as many bottles of wine as you want to your display.
The BYO Wine Rack is configurable, meaning that it can be assembled in many different shapes and those shapes can be changed in an instant. It is modular, meaning that you can add as many bottles of wine as you would like by simply connecting more than one BYO together. It is easily assembled and can be stored flat, thanks to its slotted connection design. And it is colorful and sleek, with initial color options of bright red, cobalt blue, and graphite. Here are the five configurations that can be built with the base unit.
The BYO Wine Rack works wonderfully as a kitchen counter wine rack, allowing you to change to a new look at any time. If you are the type of generous soul who loves to share wine with your closest companions, use it to display all of your most prized wines for a social gathering or dinner party. It could also be used to display your least prized wines if you don't want to waste the good stuff on your friends.
Your available options for consumption of wine are vast, so your options for wine display and storage should be equally varied. The multiple configurations of the BYO Wine Rack allow for a different look each time you re-stock. Or if those bottles are gathering a little dust, take the BYO apart, re-configure, and give your space a whole new look. And maybe do some dusting while you are at it.
As your wine collection grows, build the BYO Wine Rack in whichever direction seems best at the time. If you have tons of counter space, three (or more) BYOs side-by-side make a bold statement. If not, build up to make a wall of wine. You can always change your mind. The BYO does not judge your indecisiveness.
If you are hurting for space, the slotted connection design means that the BYO can be easily broken down and stored flat in a drawer or cabinet. Bring it out for special occasions, or whenever you need a splash of color to light up your kitchen.
As a daily storage solution the BYO is streamlined and colorful, always reminding you that your wine is but a corkscrew away. Two bright, eye-catching colors stand out in any kitchen, while the graphite option sleekly stashes your wine.
The BYO Wine Rack comes as a base unit of 2 long and 4 short pieces allowing you to store 5 wine bottles in 5 different configurations.
The BYO is infinitely expandable and additional storage space is available by purchasing as many add-on kits (1 long piece and 2 short pieces) as you need to create the perfect display. This also allows you to mix colors as you expand your collection.
The base unit holds 5 bottles of wine. Each add-on kit allows you to add another 2 bottles.
The BYO will be made out of painted and lacquered MDF, which is what many custom cabinet makers use for painted cabinets because it is very dimensionally stable and won't warp.
The BYO Wine Rack was designed to fit standard 750mL wine bottles. It fits every shape of bottle that I have been able to find at that volume. Unfortunately it will not fit those massive 9 liter novelty bottles. If you are trying to display those on a wine rack in your home you are a silly human being and I want to meet you.
For the first production run, the BYO will be offered in bright red, cobalt blue, and graphite. In the future I hope to offer many different colors so that you can customize your rack to your color preference (i.e. the colors of your country, college, or favorite team.)
All components of the BYO Wine Rack will be made in the USA, right here in Chicago, IL.
Here is my best current estimated schedule for production. After the project is funded I will give regular updates regarding the progress and alert you if these dates need to change.
A while back, I made a wine rack using glued joints to connect these beautiful pieces of walnut, intending it to resemble a tree.
It wasn't easy to clamp and glue. And it wasn't a particularly elegant method of joining two pieces of wood. So I started playing around with construction methods that would eliminate the need to glue the joints. That experimentation led me to the slot design that I have used in the BYO and I happily realized that the straight slots allowed me to take the whole thing apart and fold it flat. I also found that it allowed me to assemble the rack in whatever configuration I wanted.
The BYO Wine Rack has been prototyped dozens of times by yours truly and most recently by a professional prototyping shop, which made the red, blue, and graphite BYOs that you see in all of the photos. They are perfectly functional and I think they are pretty, but they are not mass produced finished products yet.
That's where you come in! Multiple stores have expressed interest in carrying the BYO if I can get the cost to a point that it is attractive for retail. The only way I can get the cost to a level that retailers will accept is if I make a large initial run. I need your backing in order to place the orders with the production scale manufacturers that I have lined up here in Chicago.
I'm excited to finally be putting this out into the world. I need and would truly appreciate your support in order to get the BYO Wine Rack into production.
I am fully invested in making this project a success because I am fully invested in making design my career. I see the BYO Wine Rack as the starting point of a journey that will include having my own studio to create and launch many more household products. But I hope to also focus on teaching design, woodworking, and other physical skills to kids and teenagers.
I am a mechanical engineer by education, but in the workplace I never felt fully engaged doing what mechanical engineers do. Once I started to make things and learn how to use all kinds of tools, I started to feel at home. I have confidence and clarity when I am cutting or clamping or sanding and I want to continue to explore those skills in order to make fun and useful goods. I also want to find a way to replicate in kids the confidence and enjoyment that I get out of making things. Not everyone has to grow up to make things or be a designer. But going through the creative process, learning to use your hands, and feeling free to make mistakes are valuable lessons to take to any profession.
If you help me by backing the BYO Wine Rack, you can not only Kickstart this one product, but you can help me get the wheels in motion for my longer term goals. Thanks for your support!
My wife. She has been instrumental in this project and it is as much hers as it is mine. Thanks for lending a critical eye and wonderful suggestions, for making phone calls, for editing, video, and graphics help, for being my photography assistant, for keeping me on track, and for being an outstanding support in general.

Risks and challenges
The BYO Wine Rack is a simple design requiring essentially two main manufacturing steps; Cutting the pieces, and painting/finishing them. I have manufacturers here in Chicago lined up to cut and finish all of the pieces necessary and the lead times that they have quoted me are very reasonable.
I do not expect to have any issues with the dimensions during manufacturing because I have tested and re-tested the overall dimensions of the pieces so that they build on each other properly. Also, the latest prototypes were made using production equipment so I have proof that it can be done efficiently.
The risks that I see are in the scheduling of manufacturing and being able to fit quickly into their schedule as a relatively small contract. I'm confident that it can be managed smoothly. They are all within a short drive of where I live and work.
This project has been a semi-constant in my life (and subsequently in the lives of my patient wife and daughter) for going on two years now. It has been a constant in my brain, but only semi-constant in practice because it was put on hold in order to plan and execute a move across the country. My wife and I have spent countless hours getting it all together and have funded all of the prototyping up to this point. Now I'm looking for your support to get the BYO Wine Rack into the hands of anyone and everyone who wants one. Thanks and I can't wait to be shipping your rewards!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
