WitchHunt is the hidden role game perfected.
WitchHunt has been developed regularly for the last 8 years, starting from the foundation of traditional games like Mafia and Werewolf. It is a social game designed for large groups of 7 to 22 players, and is fast-paced--usually taking a bit less than 4 minutes per player.
WitchHunt is unique in that not only do all players get a simple unique role, but dead players still make important decisions and play an active role in the game. This means WitchHunt has the classic paranoia of a gradually shrinking group of players, but without the obnoxious player elimination!
Over the last 8 years we've tested 40 major versions of this game. Hundreds of players have played thousands of games at dozens of game groups, conventions, and internet forums, and have spread the game to numerous communities.
In this time, we have tested 366 different cards. Some were gems and some were duds, but today we are ready to show off the 22 most interesting and elegant characters, alongside the perfected mechanics for dead players.
And now it's finally time to publish--but we need your help!
By backing this project now, you get one of the first professionally-printed boxed copies of the game.
This is the complete game as will be sold in stores.
It includes a poker deck of 22 character cards and 22 team cards, along with some additional reference cards for rules.
The big deal here is the jumbo deck--a giant copy of all those cards, included in every box alongside the normal-sized deck.
Why? This enables a group to hand out the poker-sized cards privately, while laying the jumbo copies out in the middle of everyone as a reference. This makes it clear to everyone what cards are in use and what the rules are.
This is the number one factor in making the game accessible to new players!
Plus, it lets all the players enjoy the full-size original artwork!
Laura's working on a very special, limited edition print for backers--check out the sketch below! The final artwork will be printed on premium giclée paper (a thick heavyweight fine art paper with a textured feel) and each print will be hand-numbered and signed by Laura. Retailers will get a huge 24x36 poster of this to hang in stores to attract local WitchHunters!
All our game rules are always available online, in a clean HTML format that loads well on any device.
Want a taste? Here's a public print-n-play PDF of most of our cards, with in-progress artwork. (A full version with all the cards and finished artwork will be available to all our backers.)
"WitchHunt is also a game that is perfectly positioned to challenge social deduction gaming veterans and introduce an entirely new level of game play that is seldom seen. WitchHunt is vibrant and colorful, with more twists and turns than I have ever seen in any other social deduction game." - Father Geek's Review
"We've been running Witchhunt as a regular event in our shop for over a year. It's an extremely popular event that has continued to garner great attendance, and has left my players dying to know when they will be able to buy a copy." - Victoria Williams, owner of Game Paradise, Indianapolis
"A wonderful night of lying to your friends!" - James Portnow, writer of Extra Credits, Seattle
"In my 200+ games of WitchHunt, I've never seen two games play out the same way, or begin the same, or even have the same exchange of pregame witty banter and triple-bluff confessions." - Josh Little, St. Louis
"This game was so much fun! Best Mafia variant I've played." - Jose Duarte, Chicago
"It's definitely a fun game the really livens up the mafia experience. You've never known true terror until you've met a Loose Cannon Witch that's in over his head." Tom Zhou, Santa Clara
"WitchHunt will keep your brain racing in a loop of strategic thinking with endless possibilities. Even if you get killed off, there will always be ways for you to get back at your enemies! This ingenious, addicting game will keep you staying up for “one more game” until you realize that it is 6am and you have to go to work in two hours!" - An Nguyen, Indianapolis
"I've been playing for months with An and have absolutely loved every game we've played! I like that you're always important in the game even dead! The art is wonderful, the roles are all fun, and each game is always unique! Thank you for creating something so cool for our group!" - Brittany Crites, Indianapolis
"I generally don't care to play many games like werewolf or mafia. Kinda sucks just waiting to be killed and out of the game unless you are one of 3 lucky people to get a role with an ability. Gave WitchHunt a shot at a convention with friends. 4 hours later we were upset that the game master wanted some sleep. We were having a blast! No one was a plain villager, no one was eliminated and a great time was had by all!" -Todd DeWitt, Springfield IL
"You start with your 'social deduction game'. Once you've mastered that you move to your 'ultimate social deduction game'. Once you've mastered the ultimate social deduction game, then you step up to Witchhunt. It's fun, fast paced, and engaging to all the players at all times." - Nick Keith, Farmington MI
"WitchHunt was the first social deduction game I've ever played, and the rules were streamlined and clear enough that I was able to catch on and play with the best of them pretty quickly!" - Isaias Suarez, Jacksonville FL
"The other day I told a guy at work that his code looked like Witch-logic... WitchHunt gets in your head, in a good way." -Kyle Flagstad, Madison
"I love WitchHunt because it's a dramatic, exciting game that's different every time. I look forward to playing WitchHunt with my friends every week, and there are games we all remember and talk about months later!" - Aarthi Arunachalam, St. Louis
"WitchHunt fixes all of the problems I've always had with the classic mafia game. It adds a huge element of skill to the game with well thought out roles and game mechanics. It also keeps all players interested, even after they have been killed." - Roger Iyengar, Palo Alto
"We randomly happened upon WitchHunt in the hall and bought a two hour slot to give it a shot--easily some of the most enjoyable two hours of GenCon. Between the beautiful art and interactive down time with the Angels and Demons mechanic, this is definitely a game I will be backing." - Timothy Austin, Chicago
"This really turns werewolf on its head, not only are you guessing what roles people have, but what team they are on. One of the best parts for me was the pow-wow with the angels or demons after dying. Looking forward to backing this game. Best Variant of Mafia/Werewolf I have seen." - Sean Sullivan, Lafayette IN
"WitchHunt is a riveting experience that can be enjoyed with friends and strangers alike." - Juan Chavez, Dallas
"WitchHunt combines everything that I love in a great game: strategy, a bit of luck, and spreading it all around social dynamics! It always leaves me with such fond memories and experiences I can share with others, something that can't be said for most games I do play!" - Alexandra Logan, Birmingham
"WitchHunt is a uniquely devious game of second-guessing and betrayal wrapped in comforting blanket of strategy and storytelling; it is by far my favorite game of the genre." - Corwin Dodd, San Diego
"Witchhunt helped me get to know a whole new group of friends in no time at all. It’s great!" - Adam Sandor, Teaneck NJ
"WitchHunt is the best social deduction game we have ever played! The art, variety of characters that can be witches or villagers, and the angel/demon mechanic keep every game completely unique and all players involved until the end." - Sam Cook, Garrett IN
"I've taken dates to games of WitchHunt--it's that good." - Ben Berman, New York
We reached our goal in less than a week--you guys are incredible!
First up, we have some stretch goals based on our combined social media reach! Help us shout about this game from the digital rooftops.
But that's just the appetizer. Here are our primary stretch goals:
We look forward to bringing you guys the best game we can!
Learn more about the game and our unique story by following us on Facebook and Twitter, visiting witchhuntgame.net, and joining our mailing list! You can also email us at firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions about the game or campaign.
All rewards for this project will be shipped from the United States. In addition to letting us offered signed rewards, this will also let us personally inspect every box we ship for damages.
We want to offer full transparency to our backers. After polling prospective backers to find what would best fulfill this goal, we are keeping shipping costs separate--what you see when you select a pledge level is the honest shipping price, with no complex gimmicks or "free" shipping that inflates the base price of the game. We have intentionally created a svelte WitchHunt box that will be able to ship anywhere in the United States for only $5.
Since the game is small, light, and carries a low declaration, most international backers should not face additional fees.
As our international backers know, international shipping is expensive, complex, and volatile. As first time game publishers, we are approaching this challenge in an informed but conservative way to make sure no one gets burned.
Unfortunately, we have decided that we cannot responsibly offer the lowest game pledge level internationally; in many cases, the shipping would exceed the cost of the game! This would result in possible margins of error for project fulfillment larger than we are willing to accept for our backers.
To make up for this, we have factored in a discount for international backers on the higher tiers. You can think of it as us signing all international copies for free, to make up for the expensive shipping. We hope this solution satisfies all our international WitchHunt players.
Risks and challenges
As the game design is complete, the remaining challenges include:
Finishing the illustrations — Laura has already completed most secondary assets, and is preparing for the final pass on the character illustrations.
Creating the physical rulebook — We have already produced a professional website showcasing the game rules, and have already produced many art assets that will be used in the document.
Printing the game — We have been in talks with multiple printers and production partners for some time, and have been receiving quotes on a regular basis; all of these partners have printed numerous successful games before. You'll note that we are specifically keeping the game to a single SKU (no "special editions" or pack-in bonuses) to keep production budgeted, fast, and simple.
Shipping the game to our backers — We have planned a game box that will ship very economically within the US, and we have accounted for the complexities of international shipping. Please see our FAQ for more questions.
Our target fulfillment date is conservative; we are confident that we can fulfill all backer pledges by this time.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
