The Future of Refactor Fitness

We have some ideas we are still cooking up.  We invite you to follow along on our website, https://refactorfitness.com.  Sign up for our email list and we'll keep you posted on anything we do in the future.

For everyone who pledged to the project, thank you tremendously for your support.  As a small startup, it really means a lot.

We are Refactor Fitness. Cyclists, engineers, product designers and dedicated gear geeks. 

The RF-1 is a GPS cycling computer with HD camera and LED lighting system. Multiple devices creating cluttered handlebars, with limited battery life and challenging user interfaces led us to start thinking about a better cycling computer.

In order to make the battery as efficient as possible and to maximize the light output, the key is to use highly efficient LEDs. Our LEDs are nearly twice as efficient as the most common LEDs used in the industry. This provides good light output with little enough heat to pack them into a GPS device. The high efficiency also helps with battery life.

Because of the light efficiency, the battery life with the lights on and the GPS functioning is around 8-9 hours.

Whether you want to record a memorable ride or keep the camera running as a dashcam, the Full HD 1080p camera has you covered. Record your whole ride, or use one of the programmable buttons to start and stop your recording for that extra special moment.

In dash cam mode, the video continuously records the last 20 minutes so that you'll always capture that dramatic moment, but never run out of space.

With 32GB of onboard storage, the RF-1 can record approximately 6-8 hours of Full HD 1080p video, or over 30 hours of HD 720p video.  That video can be backed via USB up to clear up the RF-1 for your next ride.

The RF-1 features a full suite of environmental sensors including an accelerometer, altimeter, and barometer. The accelerometer lets you know the gradient you’re on faster than an altimeter. The barometer measures the air density. When you put those together, the RF-1 is able to produce an accurate estimate of your power output (when not riding in a group).

It’s especially accurate on a long sustained climb, exactly where you’d like to know that data. Relying on the RF-1 means you don’t have to buy new cranks or install anything else on the bike.

Building on top of Android, our software has the snappiness you expect from your mobile phone but have always been missing from your bike GPS. Utilizing Android means we can easily update software and deploy it to your existing device, so you don’t need to always buy new hardware to get the most current software features. Additionally, you can download other Android apps and install them right on your RF-1 (in a future release).

For third party support, we are going to support uploads to both Strava and Training Peaks on release, with further support coming in the future.

Over the last three years, we have iterated over dozens of designs and produced our first prototype. Our team has researched and sourced the best hardware (screen, battery, CPU, camera and lights) and teamed with the best software and hardware partners to give our backers the cycling computer we would all want.

Risks and challenges

Over the last 3 years, we have established relationships with the best contract manufacturers and product vendors. We have attempted to mitigate the long delays often seen in production of consumer electronics. In doing so, we have already vetted our production process, supply chain and bill of materials (BOM). We have had timeline and feasibility discussions with multiple parties. The longer timeline we have chosen for delivery should allow us to realistically meet it, instead of pushing out endless delays.

Being part of Hardware Studio has been extremely valuable in our readiness. They have helped us find partners, hone in the timeline, tune the budget, and served as a 3rd party validation of the process we are using to build our project.

While our goal is not insignificant, it reflects the fact that we know that this project is not trivial, and we do not want to delay shipment or progress while we scramble to collect more funds. Fully funded, we know we can deliver what we set out to build.

Our team and vision is ready, and with your support, we will be able to hit our timeline. We plan to update our backers continually, with each deviation from the promised timeline. First with software previews, and later with hardware revisions as they are delivered.

However, we cannot anticipate unforeseen challenges in the supply of materials, assembly delays, and potential hardware or software issues which arise during production.
