About this project

Thank you, everyone! Although this project didn't make it's crowdfunding goal, I'm eternally grateful for the opportunity to give it a try and for all the support. Onward! You can follow along at Tiny Home Helper as I continue to get Basecamp01 off the ground. See you out there!

////////////

Building your own home can be hard, even if it's Tiny. You can do it all by yourself, or you can hire someone to do it for you. But what if you're in the middle of that range and can't afford help? That's where I come in. I've formed a benefit corporation, Tiny Home Helper, Inc., whose mission is to help pioneering people live in a Tiny house—to benefit themselves, our community, and our planet.

After many years of volunteering as a builder, and rehabilitating two properties, I've learned a thing or two and have become a passionate housing enthusiast and humanitarian. Trained as a designer, I’ve believe in the DIY ethos and minimalism. Basecamp01 will be my mobile headquarters to travel the country and help DIY builders and support Tiny villages for the homeless.

The truck

This 1988 International box truck, will be a mobile design & construction powerhouse, filled to the brim with tools, and rigged to work off-grid job sites.

At just 14' long, it will be my home, office, and toolbox. Plus, it's a great example of design thinking and execution of small space living for both warm and cold climates. Basecamp01 will pack into its 8'x8'x14' compartment:

  • Twin bed, storage for clothing and personal items
  • Office with computer and internet
  • Kitchen with a fridge, sink, and coffee maker
  • Bathroom with waterless toilet & shower
  • Workshop with tools
  • Energy with solar panels and battery bank
  • Tools, gear, and gadgets for life on the road

Launching this company has been my sole passion for the last few years. I've already helped a non-profit, Miranda's Hearth, build their Tiny, Aubergine, as the start of their community art hotel project, and am looking forward to helping more builds once Basecamp01 is finished. Funding above the campaign goal will go toward operating costs; the 2017 budget totals $10,662.62 and includes a fuel budget, legal fees, insurance, etc.

Currently, Basecamp01 is tucked away in the woods outside of Savannah, GA, where I'm camping alongside the build. The rough timeline for this project is:

  • March: Kickstarter campaign
  • March–July: Project build
  • July–September: Wrap up outstanding deliverables
  • October–future: get out there and build!

Risks and challenges

I already own the truck, and have had it thoroughly repaired mechanically. Although it has received many new parts and each mechanic has been impressed with its great condition, the truck itself is a risk. I've kept this in mind as I've thought through the plans.

I am setting the campaign goal at just enough to cover the cost of materials for the build out of the living and working space (plus fees, taxes, etc.), and will continue doing freelance design work to support myself.
