MEGADROID: ACTIVATE! THE COMIC & ALBUM!
This project was many, m-a-n-y, years in the making. And although it's listed here in Kickstarter's "comics" section, it's much more than that. But first, please allow me to introduce myself - -
My name is Nelson Faro DeCastro. Most people know me from my work in comics just as "NELSON", since I've always signed my paintings with my first name. I've worked as a full time comic book illustrator for Marvel and DC since 1990. But after 26 years of drawing comics for a living, I realized that it was time for something different. It was time to take the storytelling aspect in a new direction. And although so much great stuff has been done with comics over the last 50 years or so, I wanted to try and create a new universe and expand it in different ways. So I decided to go with something else I knew well. Music.
So you're probably asking yourself, "What's the deal?", right? - -
"Is this thing a comic or a record??"
And to put it quite simply, the answer is, - - - - BOTH!!!
Still with me? Awesome!! Ok, so here's the project in a nutshell - -
Each song on the record tells of a concept, situation, or subject that I'll be making comics about. It's basically that simple. However, they're all intertwined in one way or another.
For example: The song, "MEGADROID" is about a giant robot that was discovered in a hidden silo buried deep underground.
For years, goverment officials have been trying to discover what it's purpose is, and who built it, but to no avail. (This is the first storyline that will be dealt with in MEGADROID issue #1)
The storyline in the song "Attack of the KT-88's" takes place not long after the MEGADROID's launch. It's a story about rebel forces battling deadly, automated patrol drones.
These killing machines guard the quarantined border of Manhattan island after a near catastrophic seismic event.
"Dominus, Sanctus, Inferne!" is about three people who find a long lost book of incantations called the "Malevolus Invocatus". One of these three characters is also a rebel soldier from the song "Attack of the KT-88's". This links them to the storyline and making part of the MEGADROID universe.
"Before the Ink Dries" is about a nefarious criminal agent who is pressuring one of the three people from the song, "Dominus, Sanctus, Inferne!" into reacquiring the, "Malevolus Ivocatus" and turning it over to him. He also has many other connections to many other characters in the MEGADROID universe and so forth.
So that my friends, is a basic breakdown of what I'm doing here - - Creating characters and storylines - -
- - Then developing them with songs and comics!
Sound cool to you? - - It does?? - - Good to hear!!!
Now this particular Kickstarter project, is basically comprised of two items:
1. The full length 11 track rock/metal album called "MEGADROID: Activate!"
2. The full length, 24 page debut issue of "MEGADROID #1".
So basically, you're getting TWO things for the price of one here!
First off, let's take minute and talk about the comic you'll be getting, along with a sneak peek at some of the art!
The comic will be 24 full color pages of Sci-Fi escapist fun. It all starts here. I wrote, penciled, inked, and even lettered the issue entirely by myself. I have just a few pages left to go to wrap it up.
***NOTE*** MOST OF THE COLORED COMIC ART YOU SEE HERE IS IN THE "FLATTING" STAGE. Flats are simple color breakdowns that the colorist will work over and bring to life. Luckily, I was able to coax some of my good friends like Paul Mounts into working on the coloring for me. He is a seriously "in demand" colorist and one of the top guys in the business. I will also need to pay some other pro production people to format the digital version, prep it for print, and other things like that. Although the comic will be offered as a digital download, I will be printing hard copies for the true comic collectors out there.
***PLEASE NOTE*** - - I WILL LIMIT THE PRINTING OF "MEGADROID #1" TO 5000 COPIES ONLY!!
So for example, if this Kickstarter gets 2,500 orders for the comic, I will be duty bound to print no more than 2,500 extra issues for individual sale. Ever. (Of course if this initial launch exceeds the limit of 5000 I will print the amount to fill that order (Plus a few extra to compensate for shipping damages, press & critic reviews, etc.) but no more!!) I just don't care how many orders I get later, etc. I will not print over 5000 copies. First issues are supposed to be worth something down the line!! I have a great respect for, and loyalty to, all of the collectors. I know how crappy it feels when a book you bought and stored for 20 years turns out to be worth a fraction of its cover price.
Many of the items I'll be offering here and down the road will be LIMITED so the fans who were with us from the start will have something cool and rare!! After all, they deserve it!!!
The hard copy versions of the comicbook will be signed by myself, as well as the entire band. Drummer Dave Lopez, and bassist Eric Presti make cameos in the comic as well as several others who worked on it or sang backing vocals, etc.
Now, let's take a look at the ROCKIN', FULL LENGTH, METAL RECORD, BABY!!!!
This album is a culmination of 33 years of song writing. I think I first started working on "Sadistik!" with Dave back in 2008. And although I write lots of songs, these were the first finished ones that fit the criteria for the the whole MEGADROID concept. Now, making an album happen with a team of other contributing songwriters, producers, engineers, session players, A&R people, public relations experts, graphic designers, and label staff is already quite a task. - - But making an album almost completely on your own is a monumental feat.
If you don't believe me, check this out: Coming up with the basic idea for the song is easy. But the devil lies in the details. Next, I had to write all the lyrics, & sing all the lead, harmony, and most of the backing vocals. Then I had to write and play all the rhythm and lead guitar parts. Then write and play 90% of the bass lines. Then write and play all the piano and synth parts. Then track all of Dave's drum takes and Eric's bass lines.
All of those "takes" and "lines" have to be sorted, labeled, reviewed, rated, edited and comped down, which, of course, is something you can only do after reading 900 plus pages of Pro Tools manuals. Ugh...
I EVEN TRANSCRIBED THE WHOLE RECORD, NOTE FOR NOTE!!!
ALL VOCALS, LEAD & RHYTHM GUITARS, BASS, AND KEYS!
And that still isn't all. I had to go out and record all the sound effects needed for tracks like "Activate!" or "Battle For the Lower East Side"! I also needed tons of gang vocal sessions to get the sounds you'll hear on tracks like "Arms of the Hydra" or "Get It Up'.
"But what about the band's visuals", you ask?
You're right! I wasn't done!! I still had to create all the art and graphics for the band, too!
I needed a cool band logo and universal symbol!
I also needed art for the album cover. I needed to shoot all the photos and Photoshop all the graphics for the CD's lyric booklet! I had to build a MEGADROID web page! I had to research music distribution methods and stuff like ASCAP.
The list of things seemed never ending. But each new obstacle only strengthened my resolve. I was determined to pull this off even if it killed me.
But here we are! Looks like the finish line is right up ahead and I may live through this after all!!
So let's take a look at the record's track list!
1. Activate! 0.50 (Cinematic SFX track intro to track 2)

The record was recorded with top of the line analog gear at Method of Groove Studios in Brooklyn and The S.I.L.O. in Queens. All tracks were recorded in super high 88.2khz/24bit resolution (That's 2 x higher than CD quality!) The album will feature mixes by veteran producer Joey Z (Life of Agony, Stereomud, Carnivore) and mastering by the one and only Jay Frigoletto (Oasis, Alice In Chains, Blondie, Damage Plan, Eddie Money, INXS, Black Eyed Peas)!!

Risks and challenges
Luckily, there aren't many challenges left for this project. Most of it is pretty much in the can and ready to go. That's the one great thing about doing all the work yourself. There's no one to slow you down!! If all goes as planned all items should be ready to go and in the mail before the year's end. Let's do this, people!!! :-)Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
