A letter from Mimi
Hello darling! Sit down – no, not on the Le Corbusier! – I want to tell you all about Dorrance and this project.
Denise Dorrance (international cartoonist!) has been drawing me for over a decade and I’ve appeared in all kinds of divine magazines and newspapers all over the world. Tho I’m still waiting for the cover of Vogue … Anyway, she’s got this HUGE pile of material on me and everyone keeps saying to her, ‘What about a book of Mimi cartoons?’
I, of course, think it’s a brilliant idea and told her about Kickstarter. How you can get this fabulous project up and running by getting all of my fans to help fund it.
So, we’ve sifted through an enormous pile of cartoons about me – all brilliant of course – and have chosen about 100 of the best.
I said to Dorrance, you are NOT going to do this on the cheap. We need it beautifully designed and printed – it has to be gorgeous! So, voilà! that’s where you come in, sweetie. Choose how much you want to pledge and if we get enough funding we can produce the most divine book which, if we play our cards right, I’m thinking could win the Nobel Prize.
The book - "It's All About Mimi"
It’s All About Mimi will be 160 pages, full colour, measuring approx 10x8 inches (210mm x 148mm), and feature about 100 Dorrance cartoons.
It will contain previously unseen drawings and preliminary sketches, as well as bringing together cartoons originally published in The Spectator, Red, The Sunday Times and elsewhere.
In addition to a “Posh Paperback”, there will be a Limited Edition “Haute Couture Hardback" of 300 copies, hand numbered and signed by Dorrance, with a specially designed embossed cover. This hardback edition will not be available through stores, just from us.
The finished book will, we estimate, be ready to be sent to Kickstarter supporters in October 2013.
Depending on the amount you pledge, you can receive:
- a “Posh Paperback” edition of It's all about Mimi
- the “Haute Couture Hardback" edition of It's all about Mimi
- acknowledgment of your participation printed in the book itself
- a postcard mailed to you from Mimi as a personal thank you
- an invitation to the book launch in London
- a signed Dorrance giclée Art Print (in either 10”x8” or 20”x16” sizes).
- the unique opportunity to be featured in an original Dorrance cartoon
- dinner with Dorrance
Cartoonist Denise Dorrance and Publisher Max Milligan share some thoughts:
"I'm thrilled", says Dorrance, "to take Mimi in a new direction."
"Plus it's a way to get my fans involved and give back something tangible to the many people who have supported my work for so long."
Max Milligan adds: “This is a passion project for me. I begin as a huge fan of Mimi and Dorrance. Denise’s witty and elegant satire of the worlds of fashion, art and design gives a brilliantly contemporary and feminist twist to the notion of ‘the good life’.
“So this is an exciting opportunity to work closely with Denise to make her wonderful cartoons more widely available. We are combining her artistic sensibility with my ten years of publishing experience to create a book that will do the drawings justice and serve as a work of art in itself.”
What your pledge will do:
The funds raised will go towards the design, printing and marketing of It’s All About Mimi.
Please pledge here on Kickstarter, and do get involved by telling your friends, posting on your Facebook page, and generally spreading the word as widely as you can!
And a final message from Denise Dorrance:
“Most importantly, and regardless of whether you contribute to this project or not, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you that have enjoyed and supported my cartoons over the years.”
Risks and challenges
Our biggest challenge is to edit and design a book which will do the drawings justice. To this end we have brought in the designer Steve Parker, whose work through reduction.org is rightly admired.
And then we'll need to make sure that "It's All About Mimi" receives the publicity that it deserves, to allow it into a crowded marketplace. We hope that you too will be able to help by letting people know about the book.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
