About this project
What's the #1 way to make any performance better?
... put in the air!
At Suspended Motion we make modern dance take flight, literally - with a constantly evolving, limitless production that puts the magic back in performance art.
What's our mission? Dance and performance art has developed a stigma of financial, physical and social elitism over the decades and Suspended Motion is dedicated to turning back the clock to a time when dance, performance and music were a celebration of community, health and love.
You might be wondering why giving to Suspended Motion would benefit you and your community. Great question!
1) Suspended Motion offers a new way to get fit and healthy that doesn’t involve running and can be tailored to every body type and fitness level. Whether you’ve just taken the summer off or the last 40 summers off, Suspended Motion adapts to your needs.
2) Everyone loves to feel like they’ve accomplished something but not everyone likes to compete with the person next to them. Suspended Motion offers a competition free, performance rich environment that encourages personal growth without comparing you to anyone else. It’s a heart safe studio for students of all ages.
3) Currently Suspended Motion is the only Aerial Arts studio in San Luis Obispo County and would love the opportunity to reach a wider audience and student base. Many people are just starting to realize that we’re here and doing things that you usually only see in the circus. By helping us spread the word you are supporting our goal of teaching healthy lifestyle habits, encouraging pro-community engagement amongst our students and sharing an art form that was previously limited to big top tents and traveling groups.
We started out as two young women looking to break away from competition without sacrificing their natural talent for performance. Now Suspended Motion is a 35 student academy, ages ranging from 5 to 60, booking 15 performances per year, teaching 10 different aerial and ground styles as the only Aerial Arts Studio in San Luis Obispo County.
Now, we’ve reached that critical point where it’s time to spread our wings and grow. And, in order to do that, we’re going to need a bigger nest, some shiny new apparatus, bouncy padding for our dare devil flyers and fun toys to throw around like ninjas!
Here’s what your support could do for Suspended Motion:
First on our priority list is the nest…er, I mean studio! We need a bigger studio to support our ever growing roster of courageous students.
Next, we’ll need some new safety equipment for our expanded space.
Finally, we’d love to incorporate some new equipment to add to our performances and classes.

Thank you so much for your support and please help spread the word!
Risks and challenges
As with any performance the space we use is very particular. Aerial Arts needs a tall space with the appropriate ceiling so we can rig our silks and other apparatus. Not only is our selection limited but the bigger the space, of course, the higher the price.
While this was a daunting factor just a year ago, with the continued success of our studio, our rapidly growing reputation amongst the community and our consistent influx of students, we’re certain that we can meet the demands of a larger space.
Just a year ago, we were renting part of a warehouse space and paying ¼ of the rent. A year later, we’ve taken over the entire warehouse and have absorbed the full cost of rent with room to spare. Now, as we all know, moving is expensive. Our new building will need to be inspected, modified to fit our unique needs, padded for safety and of course, we’ve got to move all our great stuff.
That’s where you come in!
Helping us with moving expenses and the cost of expansion will go a long way toward cementing Suspended Motion as a member of the San Luis Obispo County Reforming Arts community.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
