Detroit Voice is a high school a cappella vocal group from Clarkston High School in Michigan and was created as a celebration of Detroit-inspired music from throughout the decades. From Aretha Franklin and Bob Seger to Kid Rock and Eminem, Detroit has fostered creativity and provided music for a nation. In the strong tradition of Motown’s Doo Wop and vocal-heavy sound, Detroit Voice uses only the human voice to recreate the Detroit sound with 8 mixed voices and 1 vocal percussionist/beatboxer.
These performers have been leads in musicals, involved in school choirs, and regularly perform in competitions such as the International Championship of High School A Cappella www.varsityvocals.com where they appeared as a finalist in New York City in 2010 and have received awards for best soloist (2010) and best vocal arrangement (2011). Their director, Brian Haverkate, has been a reviewer for the Recorded A Cappella Review Board (RARB) www.rarb.org and helped create two successful collegiate a cappella groups, Michigan State University's Accafellas www.msuaccafellas.com and Florida State University's All-Night Yahtzee www.allnightyahtzee.com.
school vocalists hope to become a staple in the Metro-Detroit area and beyond. Their first major project is the creation of their debut album entitled, “Detroit
Voice- Sounds Like Home”. The group
hopes to include hits like The Supremes “Can’t Hurry Love” (#1 in 1966), Aretha
Franklin’s “Chain of Fools” (#1 in 1968 and one of the top 500 songs of all
time), The Jackson Five’s “I’ll Be There” (#1 in 1970), Stevie Wonder’s “Ribbon
in the Sky”, and The Temptations “Just My Imagination” (#1 in 1971), among
others from current artists such as Boyz II Men and Kid Rock.
By becoming a backer you'll help us to:
*Record and edit our songs with the help of a specialized a cappella recording engineer.
*Have our recordings mixed and mastered by some of the top a cappella producers in the country.
*Purchase the mechanical licensing rights from each original Detroit artist so that we can legally sell our CD.
*Pay for the artwork, duplication, and packaging of the CDs.
*Anything over our $6,000 goal will help to purchase sound equipment (sound board, mics, cables, speakers, etc.) so we can further develop our live performance and inspire future albums. As a small vocal group it's important to have a sound system you know and trust to replicate the same performance each time. We believe this purchase to be essential to our development as a group and vocal band. Thanks in advance if you can help push us beyond our goal in order to purchase some of this gear!!
Your support will not only help us to achieve our goal of recreating these major hits for the general public to enjoy, but will enable our students to dive into the pop/rock genre and live out one of the greatest periods in American music history. PLEASE help to fund this project as we honor our region and provide our students with fantastic opportunities to create!
