About this project
Tripsy was founded to tackle the challenge of helping people plan trips with ease and to experience local culture. 1.7 billion trips are planned in the U.S. alone. On average, trips take around 10 hours to plan. That means over 17 billion hours have been wasted trying to figure out travel plans! While planning, people don’t even account for the local adventures that one can take. Our research has shown us that 70% of people like travelling to experience the local cultures and to try new foods.
That is why we are developing Tripsy, a travel planning tool that helps you design an itinerary and discover the local culture and flavors. All travellers have to do is input what places they want to visit. After that, Tripsy gives you the best route while giving instructions to the best views around. Even better, when you are travelling, Tripsy notifies you when you are near a local favorite for you to decide what to do. You don’t waste extra time trying to figure out your travel plans, saving you hours!
How It Works
Travellers put in the locations they want to go to. They can arrange it by day or time. Afterwards, Tripsy outputs the best route with the best scenery while travelling.
Tripsy gives tips on how much long travellers should stay in each location and also the time it takes to travel from one place to the next. Tripsy is connected from the desktop version to the mobile version, so you can see your trip plans on the go. While travelling, Tripsy uses your location to scan your surroundings to see what locals love to do. When it finds a local favorite, Tripsy notifies you on your phone that you are close and lets you decide if you want to go there or not.
Throughout our travels, we have found that we spent way more time than needed arranging trips. Two of us studied abroad in the previous year and found that it was hard to travel around without guidance and getting sucked into tourist traps. All of us have experienced what it’s like to spend 10 hours trying to plan a trip and passing by local eats.
Our team is composed of 4 students, all from a design background.
Karen Ma is 3rd year cognitive science student. She is also a research assistant studying human cognition. Christine Chang is a 4th management science and international business student. She is also a magazine editor with a leadership role. Matthew Ho is a 3rd year cognitive science student. He also holds a leadership position in a community service organization. Nicholas Pung is a 4th year cognitive science student. He is also studying business as a part of his minor.
How the Funding will be used
Your funding will help us ramp up our development on our service for the next 6 months. Our team has a strong technical and design background, so your funding will help us develop the product and focus on the business. We need to cover the start up costs of running a research based business. Below, you can see an overview of where the costs will be spent.
Risks and challenges
Some of the risks in developing Tripsy will be working with 3rd party APIs. Because Tripsy is created by backpacking off of Google Maps API, Google Maps API’s terms and conditions are subject to change whenever they feel like it.
However, our team has the talent, skills, experience, and expertise needed to overcome other obstacles should they arise. We also have mentors in the startup community who we can pick their brains when we are stuck.
Although we have a strong team, delays in development may be a reoccurring theme. Two of our members will be starting full time jobs starting in the summer while the other two will be back to San Francisco to work on other projects. As such, our project may encounter delays as we adjust our workload and coordinate via internet.
