@ccatks, thanks for letting me know that and glad it worked with the other dongle. Yeah Android and Bluetooth compatibility definitely various across devices. 64x64 would be cool indeed, it's something I've thought about , would take some low level firmware work to make it happen though.

Just got my PIXEL kit working with my ASUS transformer tf300t running 4.1.1. It does not work
with the dongle that plugged into it. I have to spend an hour to unpair that
dongle. With the other 4.00 dongle, it then worked. Thank you for the product. It is really cool.
Now I have to think of a creative way of using it. It will be great to have 64x64 for the next project.

Hi Al. I was on vacation for two weeks, so just got around to opening up my PIXEL today. Very impressed--great build quality and works perfectly out of the box. I love the black frame -- makes the PIXEL look very slick. I'm looking forward to playing with this and hanging it up in my office. Excellent Kickstarter project overall. Looking forward to your future efforts!

Unpacked mine today.. Did notice some cosmetic items.. The center plastic "mirror" is pretty scratched up with about an inch or so almost dead center that seems to look like an "oil" mark as there is a bit to much pressure at that area. Has anyone else seen any issues?

Yikes, I've never tried to mod firmware from scratch before. Maybe it's a bit out if my experience level after all. I might have to hold off until that part is already done so I can just mess around with the app. As for a jail broken app, that wouldn't be of interest to me at least since I don't want to jailbreak my iphone. Still looking forward to receiving my PIXEL though!

    23. Al-profile3.small

Creator Al Linke on March 9, 2013

Kimberly, that would be awesome, there is though some low level firmware things that would need to happen before iOS apps could be written for PIXEL. I have talked to a few folks about taking this on but don't have any real plans as of yet. Out of curiosity, this job will be easier for jailbroken iOS devices, I was thinking about tackling that as a phase I and then later iOS non-jailbroken phase II. But would only go down that path if interest , if you or anyone else has some feedback there, that would be greatly appreciated.

It's ok 'cause I want the animations the most. And I trust you if you tell me that you are working on implementing the still and interactive images for PC. And I think the PC is close enough to the wall I want to put the PIXEL.

      Thanks, Al! (:

      Hi Al,

I'm very sorry but I had to step back my pledge down to a simple $5 supporter pledge. I have had a number of extra expenses that hit me in the last couple of weeks and I simply cannot afford $229 tomorrow. I still really like the product and at whatever point you are taking regular orders for it I will gladly buy one because I want one in my home, but today I had to step it back.

    32. Al-profile3.small

Creator Al Linke on March 8, 2013

Hey Julián, yes you can run PIXEL off a PC now as well, you would though need to be in Bluetooth range of your PC to PIXEL (10-15 feet). To set expectations though, the PC app has just the animations so it's not the full set of functionality you can do with the Android apps. I'm in the process of adding still images and interactive animations to the app which should be there in the next month or so. On a side note, I've left everything open source in the hopes that others can write their own apps too. Hope that helps, let me know if you need anything else.

    33. Fb_profile_picture.small

Creator Julián Quijano on March 7, 2013

So if I have a laptop in my bedroom I can put the PIXEL software (like the app) in it? If doing that I wouldn't even need an Android device? So the connection would be Laptop-PIXEL.

That would be awesome. Tell me and I pledge the 245$ for the PIXEL (:
But I want to be sure I can use PIXEL in its full extent (:

    34. Al-profile3.small

Creator Al Linke on March 6, 2013

Hey Kimberly, that would be nice, I'd love to partner with someone who could write some iOS apps. For that to happen, there is some low level/firmware coding that would need to happen first. I've been talking to a few folks but nothing solid at the moment. In the near term, the PC app would be your best bet if you don't have an Android device. Another option too is get a used Android phone off eBay, you can pick those up for ~$50. If you go that route, be sure and get an Android phone that is 2.3.3 or higher.

    35. Al-profile3.small

Creator Al Linke on March 6, 2013

Hey Julian, for the animations, the Android device must be connected. This is something I'd like to change in the future but I don't have any solid timeframe to do that right now other than a technical feasibility that it is possible to do, it will require some firmware changes. The still images stay as you pointed out. The other option is to run the animations from a PC (Windows, Mac, or Linux), this I have working now as well. For the PC option, you'd need a PC with bluetooth and then of course the PC would need to be in Bluetooth range of PIXEL (within 10-15 feet or so). Hope that helps, just let me know if you need anything else.

    36. Fb_profile_picture.small

Creator Julián Quijano on March 6, 2013

Al, I have an important question.

I really want to have a PIXEL, but here's the problem: I don't own an Android device. However I have a roomate that has one. My idea was to buy a PIXEL and sync it with his device. I thought that I can set an animation and just leave it and I won't need the Android device until I wanted to change the animation.

The problem is that since the device isn't mine sometimes it will be far from the PIXEL or even off. That affects the PIXEL? I mean: can I pick an animation an set it in PIXEL and leave it in that way or the Android device has to be turn on always and near the PIXEL.

Notice that is important to me that I want to pick animation, not still images.

I have pledged 1$ but as soon as I know that I can use my roommate's Android device with not so many troubles I will pledge the right amount.

      Thanks a lot, Al!
And, despite what your answer will be, I wish you luck, since you have here an awesome project!

Creator Kimberly Martin on March 5, 2013

No worries Al, I am still going to back the project. Heck I cant let this nifty creation go by just cause there is no app. Heck, maybe I'll make one once I have it to play around with, I've been lookinf for ideas on an app to create.

    38. Al-profile3.small

Creator Al Linke on March 3, 2013

Hey Kimberly, thanks for supporting the project. I'm not aware of anyone working on iOS. PIXEL does work now on the Mac although not all the features are there in the Mac application as the Android ones to set expectations. At the moment the Mac application can do the animations and I'll be adding still images next. If iOS is a must have for you though, it would be best to de-pledge as I can't guarantee that's going to happen anytime soon. Sorry about that, just don't want to set any false expectations.

    39. Fb_profile_picture.small

Creator Kimberly Martin on March 2, 2013

Is anyone currently working on the iOS app? I just pledged to get the pre-assembled PIXEL but I only own a Macbook and iphone. I know the creators are too busy to work on it right now, but since the coding is open source, has anyone else taken on the challenge yet?

      Hi Al,

are there any news on the two way mirror and the play grey piece of acrylic shiped with the 32x32 DIY Kits? I'd be also happy to get one of these even if i've to pay for it!

    41. Al-profile3.small

Creator Al Linke on February 8, 2013

Hey Franco, yes two-way mirrors are sometimes referred to as one way mirrors. If there is a Tap Plastics near you, you can also get from there http://www.tapplastics.com/product/plastics/cut_to_size_plastic/two_way_mirrored_acrylic/558 but if you can build one yourself, that would be pretty cool. I've seen some other folks do that so I'm sure if you google around, you can find some DIY projects there. The prox sensor is pretty cool and opens up the interactive animations meaning they change if a user is standing in front. I've added a note in KickStarter to ship you the prox sensor so you're good. Very cool on the pixel art. Feel free to send me a few and I can load them up on PIXEL and send back to you. And then later perhaps you'll want to share it on the "Pixel Content" community on Google Plus https://plus.google.com/u/0/communities/110336015520013689108 and exchange pixel art with other users. Thanks again. Al

    42. Missing_small

      Creator FrancoB2 on February 8, 2013

Hey Al, thanks for that. I did a bit of research this morning and it looks like a two way mirror is the same thing as a one way mirror, i.e. a partially reflective/transparent mirror. Correct me if I'm wrong but I should be able to make my own using a piece of acrylic and some one way mirror film?

I work with plastics quite a lot and so it will be easy enough to make the two pieces needed myself. I also have an idea in mind for a slightly different way of using this which I think should come out really nicely.

I don't think I'll need the proximity sensor for my build but I've added the $12 to my pledge for one just in case. Do I need to send you a message as well?

I'm really looking forward to this. I even started to make my own pixel art for this today =)

    43. Al-profile3.small

Creator Al Linke on February 8, 2013

Hey Franco, I'll check with my supplier and see if they can do this. They are off for Chinese New Year at the moment so I'll get back to you in a few weeks. Here's the dimensions of the two way mirror, it is larger than the LED panel as it's sits in the frame opening. Its actually two pieces of acrylic, one piece is a two-way mirror acrylic piece and the second piece is a plain grey piece of acrylic which has holes cut-out for the proximity sensor. If you're not using the prox sensor, then you'd just need the two-way acrylic mirror only. Hope that helps, let me know if you need anything else.

I've backed the 32*32 DIY kit. Would it be possible to include a two way mirror with the DIY kits? I'm more than happy to pay the extra if required.

Are the two way mirrors the same size as the LED array? What material are they made from?

    45. Al-profile3.small

Creator Al Linke on February 4, 2013

Hey Thomas, it's a great idea. In fact, there is some work to port the microcontroller that PIXEL uses (IOIO) to the Raspberry Pi so in theory it would be possible in the future. It would still need to be over Bluetooth though as IOIO does not support WiFi at the moment. It is also technically possible to run the animations when the Android device is disconnected, it will just take some development work which I'd like to add in the future as a firmware upgrade. The interactive ones though will still require the connected Android device. Thanks for the suggestions.

Creator Thomas Hill on February 3, 2013

So if animations and interactions are only feasible while connected to the Android Phone, I'm thinking a Raspberry Pi running a small Java/Bluetooth over the WIFI might be a good option for a more permanent setup. It could probably hide in the the frame too!

gaetanomarno, it's a good idea, I may explore that in a future version. It would open up higher resolution images but the downside is the LED look would be lost. Yes you can try and simulate but it's not going to look the same in terms of brightness and just overall look, it's one of those things you have to see. For reference, here's a previous project I did a while back using the LCD screen of the phone itself behind a two way mirror http://www.youtube.com/watch… , the effect was pretty nice. Thanks for the feedback.
