Forced entirely against her will into a whirlwind of unpredictable and unlikely events, within a land filled with uncertainty and intrigue; Lily must search for an answer in a world which only piles on more questions. Introducing... Memento: Aurora Chronicles
There is another world, nestled somewhere in the shadows between fantasy and steampunk, where banditry is a legalised profession, where the pirate code of conduct is a major religion and where grape growers engage in brutal turf wars. In this world there are pretty women dual-wielding rapiers and exasperated heroines just searching for somewhere to belong.
Memento: Aurora Chronicles features a deep interactive story where the casualties of war are sometimes more than just lives - this is a visual novel game about friendship, loss and remembrance. It is an epic tale featuring a colourful world powered by arcane, mysterious crystals, and where fragments of memories lay strewn on the battlefields. Brave knights are suddenly unable to recollect their deepest memories within a land where an old Empire has collapsed into competing Kingdoms, Duchies and Principalities. War, disease and government red tape plagues the continent, and somewhere in the middle of it all is one very bewildered heroine.
An experimental visual novel: this is a humorous action-packed tale being explored through a game medium traditionally reserved for the more familiar high school dating sim. In this new series, the beautiful art style and gameplay elements of traditional Japanese visual novels are being retained. However, the conventional setting and narrative flow are entirely changed. There is a writer inspired by Douglas Adams, an artist inspired by Kobuichi and a composer inspired by Bear McCreary… and Tegan and Sara. Memento: Aurora Chronicles will be frequently playful, often poignant, occasionally tongue-in-cheek and consistently beautifully irrelevant. The game utilises hand-drawn 2d anime character sprites, illustrations, original music and a dash of contemporary British humour to bring Lily’s story to life; where the importance of memories is the theme discussed using both melancholy and humour. Bright Onion Studios have created an entirely new universe to begin what will aim to become one of the most inspired English Language visual novels to date.
“It's Like Monty Python Meets Lord Of The Rings In An Interactive Story”
- Tom Elkuch (“Super Best Friends”, 6th December, 2012)
The game can be best tentatively described as the love child of Douglas Adams and Tolkien had they been drunk on Earl Gray tea, had just watched all four seasons of Battlestar Galactica and Caprica and finished off the evening with a round of Kanon. A collaboration of joy, creativity and love; our goal is to create an original and emotionally engaging player driven storyline by utilising classic fork-in-the-road decisions to direct gameplay. This interactive story will be text and picture based: a cinematic style experience where the reader decisions will illustrate how Lily - our cute heroine, will navigate around some of the many challenges presented to her while journeying across the continent of Aurora.
The game is an experimentation of writing, artistic, musical and presentation styles; with gameplay and story progression inspired by traditional visual novels. It is an honest, human appraisal of life through the perspective of a young woman in a world like and unlike our own. Players will click through different scenes until they reach points in the game where they must decide the best way for Lily to proceed. These player choices will also reveal new memory arcs, allowing the reader to gain both a greater understanding of the characters as well as the world around.
In this story, Aurora is fuelled by mysterious and seemingly endless caverns of renewable crystals. Swords and shields go hand in hand with early renditions of experimental engines for monorails and ships. It's an exciting time, not just for us, but also for the people living in this fictional world. The lore, history, quirks and oddities of this place are told not through walls of narrated exposition, nor characters suddenly stopping to explain the history of everything around you, but rather through natural conversation and interesting (or silly) anecdotes. Beautiful anime-style illustrations and characters will bring life to this new blossoming world; the natural warmth and sharp characteristics of this noble art style is easily complemented by a fantastic, original music composition penned exclusively for this game. Readers can look forward to enjoying a fine ear-massage of varied musical genres and styles – all with a slight Bear McCreary'ish inspired twist.
Introducing... Lily Clairet & Eleta Foxton
By far one of the most delightful and enjoyable aspects of the game is the constant dialogue between the two main characters. Watching the unusual relationship develop between Lily and Eleta develop will leave you smiling and facepalming in equal measure. What does every conversation in the game between Lily and Eleta sound like?
#1 - Eleta Foxton On The Issue Of Ethics
"You can't just kill people!" said Lily, waving her arms in righteous exasperation.
"Why not?" responded Eleta with genuine curiosity.
"Because it's wrong," explained Lily. She cannot believe that she is having this conversation.
"You kill people too."
"That's different. I'm a knight."
"No it isn't. You just kill people with one sword. I kill people with two."
"Eleta twirled her rapier elegantly as she delivered her coup de grâce."
"That makes you at least half as wrong as me," she said brightly.
Lily's mouth opened wordlessly. She found herself temporarily paralyzed by the thought process behind that statement.
#2 - Eleta Foxton On The Issue Of More Ethics
"The people in Loret look down on valuables. Wealth is only comparative anyway, so they measure it by the amount of dairy animals under their ownership. Same wealth, harder to steal," explained Lily.
"Just about every Principality is the opposite. There are so many merchants," answered Eleta.
"You don't look like a merchant."
"I sell the things that I steal."
"Shouldn't you at least pretend to feel ashamed?"
"It's okay. I only steal from the rich anyway."
"Out of principle?"
"No. Because they are rich. So they have more money."
Lily decided it was probably best not to think about it.
#3 Eleta Foxton On The Issue Of Even More Ethics
"The monorail fares represent the most outrageous example of organised crime in Marsalis. It's actually cheaper to take a ship all the way to the Principalities," said Eleta indignantly.
"That's true. But it still sounds more like a desire for you to hoard money than having actual principles," replied Lily.
"No. It's choking us dishonest, family business thieves."
"Why? Are you in the continental travel industry?"
"The more money they force people to spend on rail fares, the less they have for me to steal."
"We need to stop having these conversations."
Wow - Sounds Great! Can You Tell Me More?
It sure does sound great, and we'd love to splurge more information for you so you know exactly what game you can expect! It will be at least 100,000 words long (and that's being conservative), and there will be a massive amount of varied art and music. This game is not set in one area. It's set across a whole continent spanning many locations. This is a highly, highly polished epic-scale game which requires a huge amount of artwork. It will offer a simple, visually cinematic presentation style with a dash of special effects, accompanied by a booming original soundtrack. Memento: Aurora Chronicles is the first in this fantastically creative new series to begin using this exciting world. The game will feature a single thrilling ending complete with suspense, shock and awe, which culminates from a rich multiple choice storyline.
By the end of this game you will have learned a plethora of insightful information such as:
- How to break the second law of thermodynamics to create your very own self-perpetual energy device.
- How to solve global warming without having to recycle.
- How to maximise your happiness by effectively utilising bribery, blackmail and deceit.
- How to exorcise your house or dwelling without being negatively judged by your neighbours.
- How to defeat procrastination while still maintaining your daily quota of irrelevant information.
- How to create a great first impression without looking like you just read a self-help book.
- How to avoid having frizzy hair after wearing hats.
This visual novel is being presented by us. We are bright as bright and poor as onions. Together we make Bright Onion Studios! The team working on Memento: Aurora Chronicles consists of two utterly penniless, yet very happy members of staff, as well as two commissioned artists ensuring that we will never see money again. Our motto is simple: A Game is for Life. Not just for Christmas! While we understand that Kickstarters are time consuming to fulfill, it should not stop the developers obligations to communication with the community. That actually sounds a lot more formal that it means. We are all complete geeks that spend our time on forums anyway – so we made our own. We humbly invite you to join this fledging, magical new community as colorful as the Rainbow Dash. Whether it's gossip, fan fiction, cosplay, art or voice acting, we hope to give you a new place to chit-chat and relax.
Under The Skin - The Artistic Design Behind The Game
In order to not triple the length of this Kickstarter, you might be interested to know more about the artistic design process behind the game. This gives detailed information about the choice of styles the the music, the art and the writing. If so, feel free to have a glance behind the madness:
Kickstarter Exclusive Rewards
Not only is the game itself an experimentation – but so are our pledges. We are cutting no corners in offering a sensational amount of creative, physical items for you. No amount of logistical hardship can stop you from being rewarded with the amazing swag you deserve. We are extremely excited to be able to offer a huge selection of these special Kickstarter only rewards that will ship with every pledge. Pledge rewards should be solid, tangible items that can last you through the ages, as well as tide you over while we work on the game.
Every pledge that comes with the game also ships with an illustrated postcard. The £6 and £10 pledges are for those that only wish to have the digital items. Everything at £14 and above has one or more physical items to go along with it.
There will absolutely not be any re-print of the exclusive pledge rewards under any circumstances. This offer is Kickstarter exclusive as a major thank you for those who have pledged right at the start.
Where Will My Cash Go?
The core team is doing the programming, writing and music out of pocket. Because of this, we are able to offer you amazing pledge rewards. To us, these aren't meaningless bonus offers - they are a core part of the game. Unfortunately, we can't do everything ourselves. If we could, we would do it for free. The money will all go towards commissioning talented artists to draw the huge number of artwork for the game, of which a number has already been commissioned. £5,000 is the minimum amount needed in order to secure the absolute best artists for the job, as well as to order an initial print run of the physical pledges. Interested in the artists your money will hire?
Indy K: http://ver-k.blogspot.co.uk/
Marie Joy: http://riiko23.deviantart.com/
The artwork will consist of a myriad of landscapes, city architecture and just plain weird made up locations - all devised in a fit of madness and drawn by hand.
But great news! Additional money will result in limitless, magical possibilities. It will allow us to have event illustrations for the many special scenes in the game, and lots more will allow us to have animated cutscenes. That's pretty exciting, isn't it?
The physical rewards are an incentive for people to pledge even should the funding be reached. Don't miss out on a once-only opportunity to make a huge mark on this new series. Distributors have not yet been decided, but we'll let everyone know in due course. You will be able to pick up a DRM-free copy of the game, and if Steam picks it up, we'll give you the option for a Steam Key instead. In addition, you may opt for the game to be in Windows, Mac or Linux. A survey after the campaign will pick up all your details, don't worry!
Production & International Shipping
We're offering an amazing lineup of rewards, and you won't have to wait long either. We will prioritise pledge production on ease of fulfilment. The postcards (which everyone will get) and fridge magnets will be shipped out together shortly after the campaign finishes, with the notebooks, canvasses and manga following as they are made available. There will be two commissioned artists drawing the artwork for the game from the get-go. The team will be completely focused on getting it to absolutely sparkle and shine. We are targeting the game for a mid-late 2013 release, with the pledge rewards arriving at your doorstep as you wait! Colorful picture updates will keep people in the know on where we are on the pledge rewards. We'll make sure you get to see your many items being readied for your home. An option in the survey will be included to ask whether or not you even wish to receive any physical items, or if you would like to receive them at a later date (if you know you will be changing address).
Delivery will be by Royal Mail, and there is free shipping anywhere in the world for all £6 / £10 / £14 / £26 pledges. For every other pledge option, you only need to pay the shipping cost listed in your category once, and you will receive all the physical items you have pledged for (expect lots and lots and lots of mail).
Please note that the game will retail for $10, and that the pledge cost at £6 for a copy is slightly lower than the retail price in order to offset any currency conversion fees which you may incur. It's the little things that matter.
A PayPal option has been included as part of this pledge drive. If you wish to donate via PayPal, please visit anywhere on our main site to see the shiny button. The ability to pledge by PayPal will be for the same length of time as for the Kickstarter campaign. The pledge costs remain the same. Please note that if your pledge will require international shipping then you must also include that in your pledge amount.
Risks and challenges
The game is an experimental fusion of different personalities and styles. While that is also a major selling point, it would be remiss if we did not say that not even we can be sure what the finished product will look like! It will be colorful and creative, and will be created to the best of our ability, but it may also be nothing like what you expect.
This project will require quite a deal of coordination and organisation. Schedules have been drawn up, pledge publishers reached, cost sheets prepared and tax forms at the ready. We'd like to think that we have prepared for every eventuality, including, but not limited to the zombie apocalypse. We reserve the right to delay the shipping of the game by up to 14 days should a global pandemic engulf the planet.
Regardless of whether you pledge or not, everyone here wants to thank you for putting in the time to read it. Once again, if you are interested in seeing this world come to life, or to have a chat with the designers, why not hit us up on our new forums or twitter?
Thank you for your time. Thank you again. Oh, and thank you once more!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
