About this project
The Beginning Threads
Hi! I'm Maurie and I'm so glad you've stopped by. Chances are that you or someone you love has a tie to adoption. My baby sister was adopted into our family at age seven. There are many pieces of her story, many moments in her life, that we didn't get to share. This has been a source of sadness and grief for her and for us.
How do we address all the emptiness? As believers in Jesus Christ, what does Scripture have to say about the gaps in her story?
After months of searching Scripture and praying, I found one truth that granted me a deep peace - when we weren't in my sister's life, He was.
The story came rather quickly as I traced my sister's life from the moment her life began. I wanted to acknowledge all the milestones that we missed and I found the Bible to be filled with the assurance of God's tender love for His children. I chose to acknowledge loss while celebrating hope. The first pages of the book read as follows:
He saw you before anyone else knew you were there...
Inside your birth mother, He formed you - every single part.
He selected the color of your eyes and the shape of your nose. He molded your ears and sculpted your lips. He knitted your arms and legs together and chiseled every last finger and toe.
He created you His very own masterpiece.
He caused your heart to beat and your body to grow. He was with you and protected your developing life.
You were wonderfully made!
Bringing the Story to Life
Once I had the words, I knew there had to be artwork to bring it to life. I wanted the book to be full of rich truths but engaging and accessible for my sister (and other children who lived for a time apart from their adoptive family). I reached out to my artist friend, Sallie Dean.
Hi, Sallie here now! In 2015, my sweet mentor-friend Maurie let me in on this idea that she couldn't not share. She asked me to consider giving her incredible words some images. I could only cry as I read them, as I recognized so many of my Father's words and His kind, Sovereign heart all throughout. Right away I knew this book was something really special!
See, it was a passion project for me, too. I became an instant mama to two through the gift of adoption 2 1/2 years ago, so my heart beats fast for this mysterious, beautiful, complex weaving of one member of a family into the others. Adoption has many facets--and this story stands out because it is sensitive not just to the adoptive family's point-of-view, as so many adoption books are; but to the adoptee's questions of loss, unknowns. Maurie was not afraid to go back to the hard parts, armed with God's Word and looking with new eyes to see His presence woven throughout.
I worked with watercolor, ink and thread, acrylic, and the occasional live flower and confetti. I worked hard to honor the story by using abstract and figurative, hard and soft; vibrant redemption, but gritty feelings.
Together, over the better part of a year, we talked through concepts and went through draft after draft. We edited, we tweaked, we restructured and we ended up with a book that is far beyond either of our expectations. The artwork is beautiful - original and creative, thoughtful and vibrant. We believe it acknowledges the hard parts or the unknowns that are felt, yet celebrates the truth that He was present in it, working all things for good.
This Kickstarter is not for profit. All the money raised will go toward printing costs, distribution, reward costs and Kickstarter fees.
We are offering rewards starting at the $5 level. The first is a PDF download of the print "Tears," featuring original watercolor artwork by Sallie Dean from the book and Psalm 56:8. This 8x10 printable will be made available after the Kickstarter ends.
The $10 reward level will feature a second downloadable print from the book, this one entitled "Patches," which includes 1 Corinthians 13:12B. For your financial contribution, you will receive access to this 8x10 printable artwork as well as "Tears" at the end of the Kickstarter.
Contributors at the $15 level will get access to an e-book (mobi file) that is accessible on Kindle devices and Kindle apps for iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, PC, Mac, Blackberry and Android-based devices. There is also an audio recording of the book by the author included at this level. The e-book and MP3 file will be downloadable at the end of the Kickstarter campaign, as well as the artwork printables.
At $25, you will receive your hardcover copy of The Bridge That Love Built. This book is 8x10 with a dust jacket cover and 36 full color, 100# glossy pages. The books will take 6-8 weeks to print and distribute from the end of our Kickstarter, but all backers at this level will get an e-book, MP3 audio file and downloadable artwork at the end of the Kickstarter.
We have several reward levels above the $25 level that bundle books to make them easy to share with friends and support groups.
Our rewards are currently just for residents of the US and Canada. If you are outside these countries, please contact us at: firstname.lastname@example.org and we would be happy to discuss distribution options.
Risks and challenges
Our only foreseeable obstacle will be time delays. After extensive research, we have picked a printhouse that we believe will provide an amazing product, but we do have to allow 9 weeks for their whole process - from the high-quality offset printing process to shipping from the overseas warehouse to our online backers. Should we run into insurmountable issues with this printer, we do have backup options available.
Thank you so much for joining us in this effort to expand this book's reach! Our heart is for God to use this as a tool for healing in the lives of children and families, and we could not do that without YOU!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
