Ex-Voto will be a book! Thanks to everyone for your brilliant support, I am over the moon to have reached the target. All extra funds will go directly towards the book production, so let's keep going! There were some lovely design touches I didn't think would be possible that could now happen, so please continue to share and spread the word! THANK YOU. Alys x
About the project
I began the 'Ex-Voto' project five years ago, booking myself on a 'pilgrim package' tour to Lourdes, France. It was based on a curiosity and fascination to find out more about this Catholic pilgrimage site, known for its healing properties and spiritual power. I then expanded the project to include the Christian sites of Ballyvourney in Ireland and Grabarka in Poland. The project consists of portraits of pilgrims, still life shots of the ex-voto left behind and wider landscapes. The project is shot entirely on analogue, black and white large format film, using a 5x4 plate camera.
The book has been designed by renowned book designer Stu Smith and will be published by GOST: https://www.gostbooks.com/
It will be an elegant publication of real quality with an innovative but classic design, printed on 170gsm ivory paper with a foil block cover. The book will be printed at EBS in Verona, Italy.
750 copies printed
Hardback cover, 290mm x 232mm
49 plates, 112 pages with foil cover
Essays included in the book are by Sean O'Hagan (The Guardian) and Professor John Eade (University of Roehampton).
NOTE: The book will go to print in January 2019 and will be shipped in the Spring (estimated delivery date March 2019).
Awards and project recognition
The project was shortlisted for the BJP International Photography Award (see below), has been a Renaissance Prize series finalist twice, selected for the Taylor Wessing Prize at the NPG and then in April 2018, I won the Sony World Photographer of the Year. This gave the project great exposure and the images were exhibited as part of the Sony World Photography Awards at Somerset House. The project has since been exhibited in Berlin and Milan. I'm delighted to now be represented by HackelBury Fine Art who will be showing some images from the series at Paris Photo 2018.
"These are quiet images, beautifully produced, with a calm, spiritual feel that is at odds with so much of our frenetic lives...The idea of pilgrimage as a journey of discovery and sacrifice to a greater power has been illustrated so sensitively by Alys that she quickly became our choice of overall winner."
Mike Trow, Chair, Professional Competition, Sony World Photography Awards 2018
Press (TV and print)
Photography publishing is a tough business and it's becoming increasingly common for photographers to have to raise substantial funds in order to cover printing, design and distribution costs. I will be putting some of my own savings towards the book but cannot cover the full costs, so your support is hugely appreciated.
All books sold via the Kickstarter campaign will be signed. UK postage is included for all rewards. Single copy books and prints posted to the rest of Europe will cost £10, posted to the rest of the world £15 (added at checkout). Prints are all measured in inches and will have a small white border. Hand printed silver gelatin prints are only available as part of the collector's edition.
Risks and challenges
The project is complete. I have taken all the images for the book, everything has been edited and the negatives scanned. I have agreed the terms with the publisher and third party suppliers. The book is due to go to print in January 2019 and I will be sure to update backers regarding the timing of production and delivery of the rewards.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
