About

What's up?

We at Dimenco believe that glasses are not necessary to watch TV and movies or play games in 3D. We believe that everybody thinks that 3D rocks, but is fed up with the required glasses. Having to use 3D glasses hampers social interaction and is simply uncomfortable. Dimenco already develops and markets glasses-free 3D technology since 2010. Dimenco's founders have worked on this technology before at Philips Electronics. We have shown the feasibility of glasses-free 3D LCDs in various professional applications, but our dream to make this technology available for everybody at an affordable price can now be realized. Recent projects we have realized form the basis of the project we are starting now. Below a few examples of digital signage monitors installed around the world.

Christmas 2012 event Convent Garden, London

3D video wall Chuo University, Tokyo

Amsterdam Central Station, The Netherlands

3D video wall Alitalia lounge Dolce Vita, Fiumicino airport, Rome, Italy

Lobby Pathe cinema, Amersfoort, The Netherlands

As can be seen from these examples, we have rolled out quite a number of projects of digital signage monitors in the past years. Our goal has always been to bring our technology to the home environment. This requires more than a less businesslike housing. Compared to a professional monitor, a TV has more input/output features, a remote control and one should be able to perceive good 3D from any angle or distance. The good thing is, that based on our earlier experience, we have the 3D display technology under control. To make a TV requires additional investment in the final product development, which forms the basis of starting this crowdfunding project. To have some more objective information on our technology see for instance this video report or this blog. Are you interested in what a big name from the cinema industry has to say? See who manufactured the displays at 2'45". Last but not least, a very nice quote from the same person on Dimenco's technology.

But what makes this unique?

3D can be seen because we all see slightly different perspectives from both our eyes, and our brains are so clever to fuse these two images into a 3D perception. Current TVs get different images in your eyes by using glasses. The way we get different information in each eye is by laminating an optical layer on an LCD, similar as a lenticular card. Next to the optical layer, clever image processing is required to provide an optimal 3D picture. Now you have the ultimate freedom to experience and especially enjoy 3D on a TV.

From the image below can be seen how the lenticular overlay on an LCD directs the light of different sub-pixels (each pixel is build up out of a red, green and blue sub-pixel) into different directions. As a result of that different images can be projected into both eyes of the viewers. Now, if correct processing of the image is done, the spectators get to see 3D.

Why now?

The reason why this technology is now available is not only our achievement, but can be partly attributed to the availability of 4K or ultra high resolution displays on the market. Normally, with glasses-free 3D display technology resolution is traded in for the 3D effect. Now, with the amount of pixels that 4K LCDs offer 3D can be visualized in Full HD (FHD). Combined with smart image processing, the high-resolution glasses free 3D innovation is called NABLA.

In the past there have been several attempts to bring a similar product to the market, but without success. This was due to the high price and limited 3D picture quality in which the viewing angle and freedom of movement was very limited.

Ok, but what can I do with it?

For starters, you cannot watch the evening news in 3D, but that is probably not what you want anyway. But we can offer you a fantastic 3D experience for e.g. 3D Blu-ray, YouTube 3D and 3D games on PC or consoles. In other words, we add a new dimension to watching TV, movies and playing games. Simply, COOL! Furthermore, if you would still want to watch normal television, that is possible in Full HD quality. The good thing is that the availability of 3D content is growing fast, more movies and more games.

So, what do I actually get?

A 39" glasses-free 3D TV with Full HD quality in both 3D and 2D!
The TV does not comprise a tuner, so you need to connect a digital source like a set-top box, Blu-ray or DVD player, digital media player, game console, etc.

Some basic specifications:

  • Diagonal active image size: 39" (99 cm)
  • Display resolution: 3840 x 2160 pixels @ 60 Hz
  • 3D technology: fixed lenticular
  • Brightness: 350 cd/m2
  • Contrast ratio (typical): 5000:1
  • Aspect ratio: 16:9
  • Response time (typical): 6.5 ms
  • Display colors: 1.07 Billion
  • Viewing angle 3D (H/V): 150/150 degree
  • AV input: HDMI, input at 30 or 60 Hz (to be defined)
  • Set dimensions: 899 x 527 x 79 mm (32 mm thickness of screen)
  • Product weight: 20 kg
  • VESA mount: 200 x 200 mm
  • Mains power: 90 ~ 253 VAC, 50 ~ 60 Hz

So, it is a true UD/4K/QFHD display. Due to the lenticular overlay we apply, the perceived resolution is reduced. However, in both 2D and 3D mode the perceived resolution is at least comparable to Full HD TVs, which are now the standard in the market.

Why do you do this and not one of the big TV brands?

Simply said because we are the best in glasses-free 3D, and we like everybody to have a 3D TV where you don't need glasses to experience 3D. We love 3D! Furthermore, we have a proven track record in applying our technology in the professional monitor market. We master all the required technology and keep a close watch to offer the best 3D possible!

What's the production plan?

We are sourcing the required components for building a 3D TV from suppliers worldwide. We have a manufacturing site in The Netherlands, but are also ramping up a manufacturing line in the Far East. To get the costs as low as possible, and to achieve the aggressive price of a 39" no-glasses 3D TV, we plan to do the manufacturing in our new facilities in the Far East. That's where you come in. With your support we can realize the necessary volume and investment to make this product available for the consumer market.

Our manufacturing line in the Far East will be ready early May 2014. In parallel we are getting our supply chain ready and defining the final product. To integrate further TV functionality into our monitor, we will integrate a standard TV board in the set. This board will accommodate the standard input/output features of a TV and sound via internal speakers. The design-in of this board will be finalized at the same time as we have our manufacturing line ready. After test runs of our new production facility, we will start manufacturing in August and can deliver the first products for this project in September, with the bulk in November.

Do you have a prototype?

As said, we have already been putting 3D no-glasses monitors in the market for a few years. Although a TV is a bit more than a monitor, the main difference being in I/O and interface features, we have already established the feasibility of our no-glasses 3D technology. See the current products we have at www.dimenco.eu/dimencodisplays/. For the current project we have a first prototype, which is still lacking e.g. speakers, but the 3D video functionality is functional. In the pictures you cannot see the 3D effect, but it is definitely there.

Based on this prototype we now need to integrate further TV functionality and start producing the display and housing in larger volumes. This requires the investment we are looking for with this project. Below some 'under-the-hood' pictures of the prototype. What you see is the backside of the set opened, and for now you can see a few power supplies and the 3D rendering electronics board (lower right) that is the special sauce to get the 3D image on the screen.

As said, there are no speakers and extensive TV input and output features implemented yet. This is the first step in our further development of a fully functional 3D TV.

Where do I fit in?

If you decide to pitch in, you’ll get a discount and be one of the first to have our product in your living room. But more importantly, you’ll play a important part to start our 3D revolution by enabling us to get our production lines up and running.

Risks and challenges

We have developed the required technology in the past years and we already successfully brought professional monitors on the market. Developing a full blown TV product is still a step up. We can identify two key risks in this project:

ENGINEERING
A TV, 2D or 3D, contains a lot more options as a monitor, especially in connectivity. To name a few: audio connection, speakers and cable/settop box connection. We have to design those features into the TV. As mentioned above, we will integrate a standard TV board into the set to support these features. This minimizes the risk of having to design own electronics.

SUPPLY CHAIN AND LOGISTICS
In order to make this project a success we need the support from our entire supply chain to achieve the price target. So all parties are contributing to this project enabling us to make this happen for you.
Of all our major suppliers we already have their full commitment which enables us to provide this high-specced product to you at very competitive price of under €899,-.

We are - if needed - prepared to manufacture a couple of 100 units.
Roughly we would need 3 to 4 months after the project close to manufacture the TV's. The first 6 weeks we need to order and receive all the components like the UHD LCD panel and the special lens that we use to create the 3D effect which is specifically designed and tested for this project. The second 6 weeks we will use to assemble all the components into a product.
And in the last 2 weeks we will prepare and execute all logistics.
The main risk of delay will be in the supply of the components, predominantly the LCD panel. However, we have a direct relationship with the manufacturer who keeps us in the loop on availability so we are confident we can deliver in time!
Off course we will keep you up to date on the progress.
