What is Battle of the Bards?
Battle of the Bards is a competitive 2 to 4 player dice rolling game with aspects of deck-building. Throughout the game players manage a troupe of bards trying to capture the audiences as they travel throughout the Taverns of Tessandor for the annual performance competition.
Each round, players will have three of their bards take the stage. A fourth bard will take a supporting roll while it remains in your hand. These bards will provide the player with additional dice, and will have a large variety of special abilities that can be used in many strategic ways.
Players will also create performances, reroll dice, capture audiences and hire (and fire) bards in their troupe. Each captured audience provides victory points and a passive bonus. The game ends with a special Encore round where each player’s most heart-melting face-melting bards will return to the stage once more to gain additional points.
I designed Battle of the Bards with these three principles in mind:
- Roll LOTS of dice, and have plenty of ways to spend them.
- Players will need to use their resources strategically to solve the 'puzzle' of their turn.
- Resonate with the rock vibes of your bards’ soulful tunes down to your very core.

Battle of the Bards is a heavy dice rolling game with light aspects of deckbuilding which we call "deck nudging." The changes to your deck occur in small increments, making each choice much more strategically meaningful.

Junk Spirit Games has successfully delivered three games through Kickstarter. We had a fun time creating, playtesting and producing our previous games but the real fun comes when we reach out to the community to share our passion for gaming. David Gerrard owned and operated a brick and mortar game store for a number of years and has always had a good eye for game balance and design. He has worked with Sabertooth Games and Microsoft in the past and brings his experience and pragmatic dedication to this project.
Justin Hillgrove has been able to do a lot of amazing things as an artist – he has painted murals for Facebook in Seattle and London, worked on toys with The Coop, Rampage Toys & Funko, and created covers for Cartoon Network‘s “Adventure Time” comic, in addition to all of his own well-known creations and exhibitions. Travis Torgerson, our graphic designer, has worked in licensed product development for brands like Adventure Time, Star Trek, and The Walking Dead. He loves typography, playing card games, and drinking copious amounts of black coffee.
We will be using multiple fulfillment centers in key areas of the world for shipping Battle of the Bards. By shipping this way, your game will likely be sent to you from within your region, eliminating the need for you to pay taxes or VAT fees. Keep in mind that Battle of the Bards will likely weigh around 1.4 kilos (~2 pounds).
Junk Spirit Games is paying a portion of the shipping as a promotion for our campaign - including any price increases in shipping between now and when we deliver your game.

Note that there will be a break on shipping for ordering extra copies, which will be done through our pledge manager at the end of the campaign. For each copy that you would like, please add the reward tier cost to your pledge.
During our previous campaigns we have seen some.....disheartening.... things that retailers had to deal with when trying to carry our games and as a previous store owner I feel your pain.
We are dedicated to helping retailers out. We've created a separate reward tier for you to pick up Battle of the Bards and you will receive the game directly from us, with additional free Promos and demo copies as needed.

Risks and challenges
This is our fourth game and our fifth kickstarter campaign, we are confident that this campaign to release Battle of the Bards will result in a high quality and fun game on your table. Our team has years of experience in creating toys, art, books and games. In many kickstarter campaigns in which I have been involved, the one thing that brings me almost as much happiness as delivering the final product being fully engaged with our backers during and after the campaign. By now you may have had some good and some bad experiences on Kickstarter. Please know that our foremost commitments are accountability and transparency.
As with turning any idea into a physical product, any number of problems can arise. While we can’t control every element of the process, we can promise constant communication with our backers.
