Announcing The Realm Crowd Story

Hello!

We've got an exciting new announcement to make about how you can get involved in The Realm's next big adventure and as you are our most favourite people we're giving you a look at it before we tell anyone else!

Although we were gutted not to achieve our Kickstarter target and get the game off the ground, we were astounded by the level of support we received, people's passion for the artwork and the ideas they shared. So we thought long and hard about how we could embrace this passion and creativity and use it to make something new and exciting that could still bring The Realm to life.

And so the Crowd Story was born. We're now inviting you to use our Crowd Story web platform to write your own story inspired by the original Realm artwork. The best story will be made in to an amazing animated storybook for tablet devices and published on the app store, with the winning author receiving a cut of the profits from its sale.

The competition launches today and runs to the 11th May and is free and open to all. Participants just need to sign up by registering on the http://therealmgame.com. Once registered, you will be presented with 26 beautifully illustrated images and asked to use them in any order to create your own unique story, simply by typing your text underneath. There are also four blank "wild card" images where you can describe what's in the scene to create their own additional content.

The winner, as well as receiving a share of the profits, will also have their wild card scenes brought to life by one of Atomhawk's world-class artists. Runner-up prizes include copies of The Art of Atomhawk book and limited edition Realm prints.

We're totally relying on the crowd to make this a success, so even if you don't see yourself as a budding author, why not check it out anyway or share it with someone you think could make it as a winner and published author!

Thanks again for all your support.

Hi Cabfe, we'll leave that up to you. Just bear in mind the intended format - in that each illustration will become a frame with some narrative. I'd suggest 1-2 paragraph would be a good length per slide.

How long each card's text has to be, on average?
Is it just a few lines with the essential background or a complete story with dialogues/descriptions?

great idea throwing this competition out there. I am sure a relaunch will be successful as you already have 3000 odd backers as a springboard into a new campaign.

If there is a second funding effort, note that campaigns using USD get more support, due to the Amazon payment support.

What a great idea for getting folks involved in The Realm! This sounds really fun.

And I will totally back a second crowdfunding effort for the game, whenever you're ready to give it another try.

We'll leave the age group up to you.

No the game is not nixed... just postponed.

You aren't nixing the game are you?

That is an interesting way to try to get some name recognition for The Realm, hope it works out!

Can you tell me what age group you're aiming at? I associate storybooks with kindergarten to early grades. Is that what you're aiming at? That would affect the style of the story.

    10. Creator Atomhawk Design+Lantern Interactive on March 27, 2014

Hi ET3D - May 11th is the correct date - thanks for pointing that out. Fixed it now!

Just a couple of answers to some questions (before they become FAQs) :)

WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY INTERACTIVE BOOK - CAN I PUT IN PUZZLES?
When we refer to an interactive storybook - we are imaging more like interactive animations rather than puzzles or branching narratives. We are not trying to make a game for this project (thats the next project! :))

AM I LIMITED BY THE EXISTING STORY ARCHS DESCRIBED IN THE KICKSTARTER CAMPAIGN?
No, please feel free to let your imagination go this time.

This post, the main page and the rules page all say that last entry date is 11th May, but the tutorial says "Press Submit before 27th April to enter your story into the competition." Can I assume that 11th May is the correct date?

What kind of content are you aiming at? Should the stories use the world background you previously shared or can they have any background (suitable for the images)? What age group are you aiming the storybook at?

    13. Creator Atomhawk Design+Lantern Interactive on March 27, 2014

Hi Bill, we plan to build it in Unity so theoretically we could do it for other platforms, but we've not made a decision yet on this.

    14. Creator Bill Schneider on March 27, 2014

Nice! Although will the storybook also be available for those without tablets/smartphones?

Saw you on the BBC in January and knew the project must still have some life left in it!

    15. Creator cabfe on March 27, 2014

With such beautiful artwork, you'll surely inspire a lot of nice stories!

Glad the project is still not dead:)
