An art book about unexpected beauty in a complex place.
There Is Nothing Beautiful Around Here is a photobook about the struggling city of Richmond, California, a place that has a reputation as being one of the most crime ridden parts of the Bay Area. The book depicts unexpected moments in a place where people have come to expect only ugliness and suffering.
I (Paccarik Orue) produced the photographs in this book between 2009 and 2011. After releasing a very short artist book edition of thirty copies with the talented team from Owl & Tiger Books and getting a great response, I decided to make a new and edition of 350 copies. This edition contains a few more images that complete the story and keeps the same design elements that makes the book feel precious in your hands. Please help us make this edition possible by backing this project!
A few details about the book:
- Letter press printed cover
- 48 pages (28 images plus text and title page)
- Single signature
- Three hole binding
- 7x8 in dimension
- Attached "Discover Richmond" booklet
There is Nothing Beautiful Around Here was mentioned in the 200 Days 200 Photo Books, a project organized by Fotografie Forum Frankfurt in partnership with Album, Magazin Für Fotografie. They asked international editors, photographers, book collectors, curators and photography lovers what makes a photography book exceptional. Antone Dolezal, managing editor of photo-eye magazine chose my book. There is Nothing Beautiful Around Here is also part of the Indie Photobook Library, a public collection of self-published and indie published photobooks that showcases these works through national and international pop-up and feature-length exhibitions. Lastly, I was invited to participate in a book signing event at the SPE conference by photo-eye.
