The Herston Desk Lamp is a beautifully designed self-balancing desk lamp, delicately engineered to allow smooth and effortless adjustment to any position.
Brought to you by former Dyson designer Oliver Chambers and his partner Greta, the desk lamp is the first in a range of products they plan to produce that marry precision engineering with natural materials, making them perfect for the home or office.
The innovative, registered design uses carefully concealed conducting elements alongside hand-crafted wood to create an uninterrupted, sculptural form without any unsightly cables. The latest LED technology creates a high quality, dimmable light that can be used as both a bright, conventional task light and a more subdued mood light, helping to meet your needs throughout the day and the evening.
Intelligently engineered using a counter-balance mechanism, the lamp can be adjusted to any position in one simple, smooth action. The leaf-shaped cast-iron weights keep it balanced whatever the position. No need to tighten any screws or make complicated adjustments - once you move it, it just stays there.
Simple, clean lines are important to us so we’ve worked hard to ensure an elegant and sculptural silhouette with no visible cables from the base to the head. Our unique design uses conducting joints that connect the wooden arms and the electrical current that travels inside them. The effect of this is a lamp that’s full of character, drawing people in to interact and play with the forms it can create.
The 360° rotational base with hidden ball bearings allows you to smoothly rotate the lamp, positioning the light source exactly where you need it.
Our mission is to create a product that has the same level of beauty, balance and care that went into the mid-century classics but is designed for today’s world. With a high performance LED light module to match other premium task lights on the market, the Herston Desk Lamp does just that. Its LED “bulb” will last for at least 60,000 hours - that’s over 27 years based on an average use of 6 hours per day. And if it does need replacing, we’ve designed the lamp head so that changing the module is easy to do. The module is produced by Cree Inc., the renowned worldwide manufacturer of lighting-class LED’s.
Unlike many task lights on the market - which are often made of metal or plastic and have an industrial feel - our lamp uses premium, natural materials. The combination of solid oak or walnut, brass and cast-iron gives the lamp a warm & classic aesthetic perfect for the home or office.
Coming from a strong background in craftsmanship, we're passionate about the making process and British manufacturing. The Herston Desk Lamp is hand finished and assembled in our London-based studio, using the finest techniques and care. Every desk lamp will be quality checked & tested personally by us before being sent to its new home to ensure our customers are receiving a product they can be proud to own for years to come.
We’ve been working closely with the Lighting Industry Association to ensure our lamp is given a ‘CE’ mark. This will prove that we meet the required health, safety and environmental regulations for the EU and beyond. We’ve refined the design based on their feedback and have consulted with them on the plans for testing and preparations we need to make. We’re confident that we will pass their rigorous testing phase due to begin in December 2018.
We’ve been developing the Herston Desk Lamp for several years, made countless prototypes to ensure our product is the best it can be and consulted with specialists to confirm it complies with quality & safety standards. We’re now ready to start the next phase - certification and production! See below for a high level schedule of how we’ll continue over the coming year to get our lamps out into the world and into your homes.
The cast-iron weights provide great stability and function to our lamp, but they are quite heavy and make the its total weight about 3kg. We have calculated the shipping costs for our key markets and absorbed as much of that cost as we can but there is still a shipping fee. Herston was officially established in 2017 by creative partners Oliver & Greta Chambers with the mission to create beautifully designed, highly functional and quality products that people are proud to own. The Herston Desk Lamp is the first product in that range. With a collective two decades of experience in product design, communication design and strategy, they work closely across all areas of the business. Bringing different perspectives and problem solving solutions to each of the challenges they face on the product design and development journey. They’re supported by a team of engineers, electronics specialists, retail consultants and business strategists. Together they’ve been able to develop their product from the kernel of an idea to a technically feasible, viable business with a detailed project plan to ensure they can deliver a quality product to their backers.
As an experienced industrial designer with over 15 years in the industry, Oliver has developed successful products for brands such as Dyson, Joseph Joseph and Shark Ninja. He is adept at designing for manufacture and specialises in complex design challenges for consumer products. With a family heritage in cabinet making and antiques, Oliver’s appreciation for craftsmanship and natural materials have led him to introduce more traditional and long-lasting processes into his recent design work. Oliver’s key focus within Herston is the product development, engineering and manufacturing process. He’s brought numerous products to market before and is perfectly placed to deliver the level of quality and functionality the Herston Desk Lamp requires.
Greta has been designing digital solutions for some of the world’s leading brands for over 15 years. With a degree and specialism in digital communications and product design, her strengths and experience have led her into more strategic design roles, consulting with high profile clients on how design thinking and processes can help build their businesses. Greta looks at Herston from a user-centric, strategic point of view - constantly asking why are we doing this? What problems are we solving? And what will the customer experience be?
The lamp has been the kernel of an idea for Oliver for a long time but it started progressing in earnest a couple of years ago. Since then we’ve gone from sketches and lego models to near perfect prototypes that are made using the intended materials and work a treat. We’ve reviewed and iterated many times along the way and are thrilled with the product we’ve now developed. We work from our dedicated studio and workshop space in South East London, where we have the freedom to explore new solutions on the fly and the space to immerse ourselves in the lamp.
Kickstarter is a great platform for launching a product, with a strong, supportive community and global reach. It also enables one very important thing. By pledging to buy our product before production, we can use your money to place the orders for the components we require. These components have a minimum order quantity required for us to get the right prices, so it’s key that we reach the numbers we need. By supporting our project and sharing it with your friends we can finally get our lamp into production and from there - the world is our oyster!
If you like the sound of what we’re doing but aren’t able to buy one, you can also show your support and help us along by sharing our page with your friends and family. The more people who hear about us and our project, the better!
Our lamp is the result of years of planning, design, refining and more planning. We’d like to thank all our family and friends for their patience, advice and support over the years. We couldn’t have done it without you! In particular, we’d like to thank Josephine Chambers, Pauline & John Hoffman, Joe Corrigan, Erin Hoffman, Anna Batchelor, Josh Richards, Zolt Gaspar, Tom & Dina Cotton, Form & Seek, Silvia Novak, Ellis Parrinder and Dunja Opalko.
Risks and challenges
This may be our first product together but we already have experience in designing and bringing complicated products to market for other clients. We understand the process and have worked hard to ensure we are in a safe place in terms of suppliers and plans for manufacturing.
All prototyping and sampling of outsourced parts has been done as part of our design and development phase at a cost to us prior to the campaign. So we are now ready to proceed to manufacturing, formally engaging our factories and starting the tooling process.
That being said, there could be unforeseen delays in the tooling process and during testing, to make sure that the product meets the LIA’s quality & safety standards as well as our own. Whilst we’ve factored in time for this, there are always risks of further delays. Should these occur, we will strive to minimise any impact on timings and keep you updated throughout.
Please also be aware that you might possibly be charged import taxes if purchasing from outside the EU, US or Australia.
We’re confident we’ve done everything we can at this stage to mitigate against any possible risks and look forward to making the Herston Desk Lamp a reality.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
