C64 Multiplayer Universe + Game Production Environment
With this project you can play in the new C64 Multiplayer Universe. And you can build and expand the Universe with your own created planet (game server) which you can build very fast and easy with the Android Java language. Also you can create and release new C64 Games on Android as independent App. These are options and not a must. If you don't want to be creative, then you can play my created planets in the C64 Multiplayer Universe.
About me: I was 13 years old when I got my C64, a year later a 1541 floppy disk with SpeedDos Plus. From then on my vocation was clear: to be creative. In the meantime I became an electronics technician and then a diploma computer scientist and I wrote hundreds of programs and produced a lot of music, 3D animations and movies.
Now it's time to go back to the roots. I'm not the typical player, because I'm not very interested in highscore hunting, so I didn't play so much with the C64, rather than produce software. So far I've searched in vain for something that's not just a pastime, but something sustainable, something that's not finished after level 12, and you're fobbed off with a trophy. This is the reason for the C64 Multiplayer Universe! I don't wanna play only a Multiplayer game, I want to jump into an Universe. A C64 Universe. And that's my plan:
I have programmed some modules for Android, which use an emulator as a central unit (all packed in a ready to use Android Lib Jar package), with which I can do everything possible. You can program a simple game in 15 minutes, because the modules already contain all functions for the sprites and the screen:
- Sprite Multiplexing for 32-64 Sprites
- 8 Way Multiscrolling
- Map Loader
- Charset Loader
- Sprite Loader
- Sprite Animations for each Side and other situations
- Big Multisprites with layers
- Collision detection with Characters (Event Handling)
- Collision detection with Sprites with and without collision frame (Sprite)
- Open Top/Bottom Border
- Open Left/Right Border
- Rasterlines Effect
- Realtime C64 Color Palette changes
- SIDPlayer for .sid files
- Gamepad Support for 10 local connected Gamepads
- Keyboard support
...and much more.
That's the reason why you can create a new game in a very short time. All this you can do in Eclipse with Android Java and then make a game server or export it as an separate Android App. The server will be written in Java and can be installed on Linux.
50% of the project is already finished. Now I want to extend everything, as well as install network functions and create a game server module, so that you can bring a complete game including your own game server online in a few minutes, and thus integrate it into the C64 Multiplayer Universe. But this is not the only thing. I want to integrate some ingame editors, also a soundeditor. It takes some time, and money, about 9-12 months until it meets my requirements, and around €7.500. I am targeting the release for December 1, 2019. Before that there will be alpha and beta versions for all backers who pledged Early Access (around April 2019).
So, hopefully you like it and want it as much as I do. In advanced, thanks for your support! When €75.000 are reached, I will release the whole project as open source project, then you can build your own C64 Multiplayer Universe. This will bring back the C64 in the mass market ;-)
Risks and challenges
I think there is no risk. 9-12 months is a good amount of time to do it all. Maybe it will only take 6 months, but for safety's sake, and also because I want to do something special, I give myself 12 months.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
